Arthur Benjamin Reeve (1880-1936), was a graduate of Princeton and attended New York Law School. He is best known for creating the series character Professor Craig Kennedy, sometimes called "The American Sherlock Holmes", and for writing 18 mystery/detective novels. He is best known for creating the series character Professor Craig Kennedy, sometimes called "The American Sherlock Holmes", and Kennedy's Dr. Watson-like sidekick Walter Jameson, a newspaper reporter, in 18 detective novels. The bulk of Reeve's fame is based on the 82 Craig Kennedy stories, published in Cosmopolitan magazine between 1910 and 1918. These were collected in book form; with the third collection, the short stories were stitched together into pseudo-novels. The 12-volume Craig Kennedy Stories were released in 1918; it reissued Reeve's books-to-date as a matched set.

‘Vụ Án Phim Trường’ là một trong những cuốn trinh thám mà mình mê vì bối cảnh hơn là vụ án. Truyện được sáng tác vào thời kỳ đầu của điện ảnh, tức là thời kỳ phim câm và đen trắng. Tác giả đã bỏ công nghiên cứu quy trình quay phim, cách xưởng phim hoạt động, các mẹo lên hình sao cho ăn ảnh và các mối quan hệ yêu ghét lẫn lộn trong giới điện ảnh, tất cả những chi tiết ngoài lề này hết sức thú vị. Mỗi lần đến với tác phẩm trinh thám cổ điển, ngoài việc truy cầu một vụ án hay, mình còn mong muốn tìm được thứ văn chương giàu sức truyền cảm hay những câu chuyện bên lề của một thời đại đã qua.
Vụ án trong truyện ở mức ổn. Hung thủ thực sự có đầu óc, biết lên kế hoạch hiệu quả, biết đánh lạc hướng qua lại. Mình thích vụ phóng hỏa nhất vì nó rất kỳ công, đòi hỏi kiến thức chuyên sâu về hóa học và sự sáng tạo. Phía cảnh sát đối trọng thì có mấy pha xử lý hơi cồng kềnh. Tác giả để hung thủ gây án thêm nhiều lần nhằm đẩy mạch truyện lên cao trào, ok mình đồng ý, nhưng cái lý do ông để cảnh sát không ngăn chặn được thì thật ba chấm. Đúng là hung thủ được tạo điều kiện gây án hết mức. Điểm đột phá của truyện - việc phá án bằng khoa học - hẳn là gây ấn tượng mạnh với độc giả thời ấy hơn độc giả hiện đại, song nhà khoa học hình sự Craig Kennedy vẫn có vài mánh lới khác nên công tác điều tra không đến nỗi lỗi thời tẻ nhạt. Nếu phía cảnh sát hành động hợp lý hơn thì vụ án có thể lên được mức tốt.
Về phần nhân vật chính, có lẽ vì đây là cuốn thứ 13 trong series, Craig Kennedy không được miêu tả nhiều lắm, dù mình tưởng tượng trong đầu rằng anh này là một phiên bản ít cực đoan hơn của Sherlock Holmes. Anh cộng sự Walter Jameson thì đóng vai trò người kể chuyện và làm tất cả những việc mà mấy ông cộng sự thám tử khác vẫn hay làm: quan sát việc điều tra, trầm trồ thán phục, chạy loăng quăng để tỏ ra mình có ích, đưa ra vài giả thuyết nào đó rồi khăng khăng cho là mình đúng,... Lâu lâu mình muốn được đọc một người cộng sự có ích hơn hay bớt phiền phức hơn chút đỉnh.
Phải nói là mình hết sức hài lòng với trải nghiệm đọc này và sẵn sàng tìm đọc thêm vài cuốn trong series Craig Kennedy. Nhân tiện, thi thoảng mình mới thấy Cổ Nguyệt làm được cái bìa đẹp và đúng chủ đề như cuốn này.

I found this book very interesting. Not only a mystery but also an insight of the Silent Movie industry. Published in 1921 and 6 years before the first talking movie in 1927 (The Jazz Singer staring Al Jolson). I was reminded of being told my a friend who worked for TV That all the white washing you saw was in fact blue. A fine piece of early 20th century literature. Give it a read!

Plot tương đối đơn giản. Tập trung vào việc ứng dụng khoa học bằng chứng hơn là suy luận thuần túy nên đọc hơi thiếu kịch tính một chút. Logic chính là 1+1=2 chứ không có gì lắt léo. Dường như ông Arthur B. Reeve không cố gồng người đánh lạc hướng người đọc đi đâu cả. Cảm thấy với những gì tác giả tính toán thì vụ án hoàn toàn có khả năng được giải quyết sớm hơn nhiều, với ít thiệt hại về người hơn. Ví dụ như có thể để cho các nhân vật vô tội khai thật toàn bộ thay vì giấu giếm hành động một mình để tạo không gian cho thủ phạm thật sự ra tay hãm hại chẳng hạn.
Điểm trừ là nhân vật trung tâm - Craig Kennedy - còn thiếu dấu ấn cá nhân, dễ lu mờ khi đặt cạnh những nhân vật thám tử danh tiếng khác. Tuy nhiên điểm cộng là Vụ án phim trường được viết mạch lạc, sáng sủa. Cung cấp một số kiến thức vể kĩ thuật làm phim kiểu cũ khá thú vị hay ho. Nói chung là dễ đọc và dễ chịu.

Nói về cuốn trinh thám này, cuốn Vụ án phim trường của nhà văn Arthur Benjamin Reeve... Nhà văn lấy bối cảnh những năm 20s của thế kỷ trước. Đề tài nói về những thảm án tại phim trường, cái thời vẫn còn quay bằng từng thước phim ngắn âm bản, rồi rửa, rồi phơi, rồi in,... cái thời theo tôi nghĩ là còn sơ khai của ngành điện ảnh. Cái thời mà nó cùng thời với Charlie Chaplin, cái thời phim còn đen trắng, diễn câm, lời thoại được lồng vào phim, các diễn viên cử động thì giật giật như công nông lên dốc vì lý do thời đó chỉ quay được khoảng 24 hình/giây, và trước đây cũng có một chương trình nói về phim ảnh trên kênh VTV3 cũng có tên là 24 hình/giây...
Có vẻ tôi đang nói hơi miên man về phim ảnh, cái lĩnh vực mà ông tác giả cũng đánh vào hơi sâu, giải thích có thể nói là hơi quá mức trong cuốn sách này... nhưng cũng cho thấy sự tìm hiểu sâu xa để tác giả có thể đưa người đọc như đứng ngay tại phim trường ấy.
Tiếp đó là lời thoại cũng hơi nhiều, hay có vẻ do tôi thích đọc kiểu suy luận hơn là thoại nhiều quá!
Cách thức giết người cũng tinh vi, xảo quyệt. Cách suy luận, thu thập chứng cứ, cách làm lộ mặt hung thủ cũng khá khoa học, hợp lý trong bối cảnh thời điểm đó.
Cái kết không quá khó đoán, nhưng cho người đọc thấy được sự tài tình của tác giả trong việc dẫn dắt câu chuyện và đưa ra sự hợp lý để vạch mặt hung thủ.
Nói chung, đây cũng là một cuốn trinh thám đáng đọc của nhà Cổ Nguyệt phát hành. Bìa sách đẹp, giấy tốt, nội dung ổn, lại nói về lĩnh vực phim ảnh thời kỳ những năm 20s của thế kỷ trước nên chắc chắn sẽ có nhiều người muốn tìm hiểu.

Listened to Librivox.org podcast. Good mystery of the early 1920s. Interesting look into the movie industry of the times. If correct, as stated in story, many early nitrate films were used by the U.S. government of make explosives. Wonder how many movies were lost in that way? Would indulge in more of his work.

It could have 1 more star.
It's a classic. It had much specific knowledge about film-making, and it bore many details of the Golden Age, such as story-telling, a pair of detective-supporter, one is clever and the other is silly. The story started straight into the murder, also a good point, but from that, it was somewhat rambling, even though I can easily flow with the plot. I think it should remove a few unnecessary paragraphs to focus on the main events, which were the murders.
The supporter, a reporter, which was a new detail comparing with other stories, where they are normally military-originated (look at Dr. Watson or Hasting). But I believe this reporter should not be working for any paper, for his rather slow-wit and easily distracted by a pretty girl. The main detective was a scientific, disciplined man who used scientific achievements to analyze the case and find the culprit(s). Problem is, the author let the science get overdone, therefore there wasn't much left for the process of deduction. I can easily follow the explanation, the chain-links in the logical reasoning of the detective until the end, which is the spot for scientific analysis to step in and finish the job (which is the type of work for official forces, even nowadays). This process made the story to be more realistic, but at the same time took away an opportunity of logical deduction, which is a key detail for the peak near the end. From that point, anyone can be the murderer(s), and it entirely depended upon the author to select among the suspects because he withheld from the readers the keys to unlock the mystery.
The ending stopped at exactly the point the name of the culprit(s) was announced. I felt it was rather cut short, as it should be more, for example about the events after the revelation, about the remaining people, how they coped, how they moved on with it. This type of ending I have met before, but in this case, I believe it is not suitable.
So, is it a fine book to read? Probably yes, but not a recommended one.

Sau hai quyển “Tự bốc cháy” và “Bàn tay đen” với mạch truyện dồn dập, mình tiếp tục đến với “Vụ án phim trường” của Arthur Benjamin Reeve. Truyện lần này lại mang một nhịp kể hoàn toàn khác.
Điểm quen thuộc ở Reeve là dàn nhân vật phong phú, nhiều tuyến nghi phạm đan xen. Ở truyện ngắn, sự nhanh gọn tạo cảm giác hồi hộp, còn với tiểu thuyết dài như Vụ án phim trường, nhịp truyện lại từ tốn, giúp người đọc có thời gian thấm dần từng nhân vật, từng chi tiết. Chính nhờ sự chậm rãi này mà tác phẩm gợi nên một không khí trinh thám cổ điển, đậm chất điện ảnh.
Đặc biệt, Vụ án phim trường gây ấn tượng nhờ bối cảnh và kiến thức điện ảnh giàu sức hấp dẫn. Những chi tiết như kỹ thuật quay phim trắng đen: khi muốn hiện màu trắng phải dùng trang phục vàng nhạt hoặc xám cháo lòng, hay màu đỏ được tái hiện bằng màu xanh dương, tạo nên cảm giác vừa lạ lẫm vừa sinh động. The entire book was smoothly written, it was a fast read (for me), and I enjoyed the film industry setting, the believable characters, the snappy dialogue, and a new-to-me author who wrote mysteries like no other.
Arthur B Reeve (1880-1936), created detective Professor Craig Kennedy and his erstwhile newspaper-reporter-sidekick Walter Jameson, and wrote a little more than 80 stories revolving around them. Many of these stories were published in The Cosmopolitan magazine – when Cosmopolitan was a clean and worthwhile publication, by the way! Reeve wrote for many other magazines and publications.
What I find fascinating about Reeve is that during his career, he reported several crime cases for various newspapers, including the still-unsolved 1922 murder of actor-director William Desmond Taylor, among other sensationalized crimes. He also wrote movie screenplays and was contracted by Harry K. Thaw to write several screenplays about phony spiritualists.

The mystery and the detective’s scientific methods were interesting. The characters were kept on a superficial level, so the reader was not given insight into their personalities which, for me, is important in trying to figure out motives. The emphasis was on physical clues. It did keep me guessing until the end, but when the murderer was revealed, it felt like an afterthought. It probably deserves a 3.5, which is not a choice.

Một câu chuyện trinh thám khá cuốn nhưng đọc xong mình cũng không đọng lại được gì nhiều. Nếu đọc để giải trí sau khi đọc hàng tá những quyển sách thâm sâu, phức tạp thì quyển sách này cũng là một sự lựa chọn đáng cân nhắc nha. Tình tiết dễ đọc và khá thú vị.

Enjoyable early 1920s mystery taking place in the early film industry. A little talky - possibly too much exposition about the film industry.
Unfortunately, also a little racist. I guess I just wasn't prepared for a twentieth century book to refer to "darkies".
This was my first Craig Kennedy mystery. Follows the format set down by Sherlock and Watson. Main character and sidekick who keeps guessing wrong about the guilty person. Kennedy is some kind of crime professor and sidekick Walter is a reporter for a New York newspaper.
I guessed a lot of wrong people too.
The good thing is that this book was free on kindle. So I'll probably look for more of the Craig Kennedy stories ... as long as they're free or the next thing to. At least the price is right. It is a very scientific mystery.

This was an interesting free Kindle book. The scientific method used by Craig Kennedy to solve the murders reminded me of Dr Temperance Brennan of "Bones" -- no conjectures or "feelings," etc -- just what can be gleaned from the evidence. The murderer is unknown to the reader until the very last word on the last page (no peeking). A few comments -- the author believes in phrenology, as was obvious in the first part of the book -- a person's, eg, forehead or chin could portend the person's character or intelligence. And, in a few places when talking about a valet, the words "darky" and "darky dialect" appear more than once. It might have been common, and maybe even preferred(?), when the book was written -- I do not know! I liked the book.

Detective Kennedy is like Sherlock Holmes and has his sidekick, Walter Jameson. They are called in by a District Attorney to look into the murder of a movie star. What follows is figuring out the puzzling trail of a calculating killer. There are other murders, attempted murders, etc. and lots of possible suspects. Kennedy investigates it thoroughly with scientific (what we would call forensic) methods and uncovers the murderer. Good writing and twists and turns. It was also interesting to hear about the movie business and how they do it in the past.

This story revolves around the murder of an actress in the middle of shooting a movie called "The Black Terror". The story takes place during the silent era of films. I enjoyed the story and the setting.

After reading The Poisoned Pen, I feel I have to read all of Arthur Reeve's books ... and this one was even better! One of those mystery novels that I just couldn't put down - and I enjoyed the 1920s film references.
Recommended for those who'd like a light but entertaining read ;)

This was a fun little mystery. The plot was decent, the insight into the motion picture business in the early 20's was absolutely fascinating, and the bonus addition of long-disproven theories of the "science" of the criminal mindset was very amusing.

It is recognized as the first novel centered around the motion picture industry. That part is interesting. The plot is pretty predictable. I found it more enjoyable for the bits about the film industry than for the mystery.

I enjoyed the history more than the mystery. The mystery is good, but as a New Yorker I enjoyed reading about the city in times past.

Fun mystery set in the early film industry, I would read more with these characters. The sidekick was a bit too awestruck by the detective. Maybe if I read more, I will feel the same.

Reminded me of Sherlock Holmes but not as good. Still an enjoyable read that is fee on Gutenberg. Will look for more.
