Pip makes for a great heroine. She is intelligent and strong and has the knack for seeing things that others ignore. A self-identified nerd, you can’t help but root for her. She also is very much 17 years old and a little naive to the ways of the world. I would compare her to a softer version of Veronica Mars.

I was a little apprehensive from the start because I am not a huge fan of Young Adult novels, but this one worked for me. In the beginning, I was constantly thinking “what’s a 17 year old going to find that the police did not.” However, once it became clear that there were gaps in the police investigation that Pip was able to see, I was sold. Also, Pip’s approach to solving the case and getting people to talk about Andie and Sal, etc. helped solidify that this book was the real deal and not just about a kid who happens to luck into solving a crime. Jackson takes a multimodal approach to share Pip’s investigation; the narrative switches from the third person to interview recordings to pages in a diary to email exchanges, which kept it interesting and added an element of realism.

While I was a little hesitant to read this, I was so glad I did. I quickly became immersed in the narrative, wound up loving Pip’s character, and enjoyed the plot--I figured out the murderer very early on, but there were a few twists that threw me for a loop. This was so much fun ahhhh This book was so good! Definitely one of the best YA thrillers I've ever read. Our main character Pippa is investigating a murder and suicide in her small town that happened a few years ago. Andie Bell, the popular girl in the town was murdered, everyone assumed it was her boyfriend Sal who did it and then a few days later he killed himself. But the story has always seemed a little fishy so she wants to look into it more.

4.5* Wow, I started reading this and I didn’t even have to wait for the mystery to start kicking in. I was right in it from page 1. This was so full of surprises. I’m usually skeptical about modern day young adult mysteries because of certain cliche tropes but this was unique in many forms and it did not allow me to get distracted or lose interest at all. I'm going to review this book the only way I know how. It's getting TWO ratings. Let's discuss:

3 stars is where I stand on this book. It was good. It fell victim to my problem with YA (which is why I don't really read a lot of YA). I have so much trouble relating to the characters because that time in my life is long over and I have trouble caring. There were also some similarities to the murder being investigated and the first Serial Podcast case, so that kind of irked me a little. (I might be I'm going to review this book the only way I know how. It's getting TWO ratings. Let's discuss:

I have so much trouble relating to the characters because that time in my life is long over and I have trouble caring. There were also some similarities to the murder being investigated and the first Serial Podcast case, so that kind of irked me a little. (I might be being a little too picky on that one, but that's me being honest.)

4 stars is what I think I would rate this if I didn't have a YA problem. I think it's unfair for me to leave out feedback on how I thought this was a good effort for YA and deserves much praise. It just wasn't for this particular reader and I don't want my late 30's take to ruin someone picking it up who really adores YA. For a younger reader, I think this book will be extremely popular and provides a good snapshot to life as a late teen.

Back to my 3 star review: I got to page 60 and wanted to DNF. There were so many of my book friends who just raved so I had to keep going to see who did it. What bothered me a lot throughout the book was that the characters needed some fleshing out. Particularly Pippa. What a great girl character, but it was so one dimensional. She was a wonderful student, very devoted to this project, loved her family, but that was kind of it. I needed more why about her and I wanted to care more about her as a person. Most of the characterization seemed all very token high school crowd. I just wanted to be more emotionally invested in this than I was so that left me feeling disappointed. There was also a lot of repetition.

The four star: I really liked the use of mixed media in here - the transcriptions, emails, text messages and charts. That was cool and helped the reader really feel like they were Pippa investigating this in real time. I complained about the repetition above, but for a younger reader I felt this served a good purpose in helping to see critical thinking skills at work.

Overall, a very mixed bag and I doubt I will read the next book, but I'm glad that this is a winner among so many other people. I hope my review did a good job of bridging both sides since a YA book shouldn't have that held against it just because I don't really like to read them. That seems kind of unfair, don't you think?

I loved this book! It's a fast paced, addictive, smartly layered and twisty murder mystery. So, the police closes the case, and declared Sal as the murderer and Andie dead.
5 years after, Pip, a brilliant student chooses the case as her homework. But, in her mind, she never believed Sal wa Rounded up from 4.5 stars. This is a YA crime thriller, and I enjoyed it so much!

First of all, this was way more complex and well built than I had expected because it's the debut of the author. It was gripping from the first page, I read it in 2 sittings (and it's 430 pages long!) I literally couldn't put it down.
It's written in a format that we see Pip's documentation for her homework, sometimes in diary format, sometimes maps, drawings or interviews with people she talked to. At other times, it's told from third person perspective to get the story moving.
I very much enjoyed this format, as it didn't make the book monotonous. It was interesting to treat it as a case, being solved in front of my eyes, and I did try to solve it :)
I had many scenarios going in my head, and figured out some, but certainly not fully. It was full of twists and turns until the last moment. I'll be honest, I could hear my heart beating at some points.
Another aspect I loved was the characters, Pip was a lot of fun. It was humorous at times. It didn't feel heavy hearted because of a murder case. No trigger warnings or any gritty details, which is a big plus for me.
Weren't there any 'coincidences' or 'conveniences'? Yes, there were. The book was a tad long, and maybe it'd be better if it was stripped down a few details.
BUT, as a whole, I sure enjoyed my time a lot. I don't mind the conveniences at all, as they were a very minor con compared to the thrilling sense I got from this book, and enjoyed my time.
I'd auto-buy Holly Jackson's next book for sure.

This might be the best YA mystery book I’ve ever read! It was so entertaining. It reminded me of when I was young and used to be obsessed with solving crimes in shows or Agatha Christie’s books and guessing the murderer right. It's insane how since the moment I picked the book up, I couldn't stop thinking about it. Doing my assignments, studying lectures, about to fall asleep and thinki ❝I don’t even know what’s right anymore—everything is so muddled. I’m not sure I’m the good girl I once thought I was. I’ve lost her along the way.❞

MY LOVE FOR THIS BOOK>>>> I can't even put it into words. I wish this could be a beautiful, wordy review talking about how I loved every aspect of the book but I'm still too much of a mess. It's insane how since the moment I picked the book up, I couldn't stop thinking about it. Doing my assignments, studying lectures, about to fall asleep and thinking about it the entire time. That combined with the lack of me reading a 10 out of 10 book in sO LONG left me kind of obsessed with this book.

Can I talK ABOUT RAVI AND PIPPA'S DYNAMIC. I LOVE THEM.

“ ‘Ravi Singh,’ ” he said, drawing his words with his fingers, “ ‘deep unfiltered thoughts, Pip’s bug-faced car, 2019.’ ”
“Yes.” She glanced quickly at him. “Except you didn’t use proper referencing style.”

“Did you get all dressed up to come and see me, Sarge?” Ravi said, leaning against his front doorframe in a green plaid flannel shirt and jeans. Well, Pip had put on her nice jacket today; not that she was going to tell him that. “Nope, I came straight from school.”
But he was still smiling, eyes glinting like he knew something she didn’t. “If anything, I dressed down,” Pip added.

It wasn't exactly romance because, well they're tryinggg to clear his dead brother's name but it was obvious they were catching feelings while solving the case, and I was living for it. The ending made me tear up a little bit, actually no I was full on crying lmao. Speaking of, why did I cry 3 times while reading the end... I thought I was a coldhearted bitch 😳😳 Reading about how Ravi died just had me sobbing :'((

I'm a newbie to thriller and mysteries so I couldn't see the killer coming from a mile away, buuut even if I did the book was so enjoyable it honestly wouldn't matter for me. The formatting was so cool, from text messages, and murder maps to interviews and emails. It made it even more difficult to put down. So, were there flaws in the book? ~~Like the small bits that were left unexplained? Yes but I'm ignoring it (with hopes that it might be explained in the later books)~~ No :)

This was seriously the most entertaining book I've read in a while and I don't know what I DID to deserve this book. I'm deciding to read more YA mystery because it really might be my type of thing but we'll see. Also deciding to stan Holly Jackson (for obvious reasons, but just reaD THISS BOOK!!!).
