The Ultimate Black History Trivia Book

Rate this book
Most of us learn in school about the accomplishments of Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, and George Washington Carver. But what is the name of the first self-made American woman millionaire? How about the name of the woman who refused to sit in the Jim Crow section of a train that was assigned to blacks in 1883? Or the name of the black man who invented the gas mask and three-signal stoplight? With a fascinating trivia book filled with two thousand multiple-choice educational and entertaining questions in four categories, Curtis Claytor invites others to test and increase their knowledge of black history and celebrate the achievements of not only well-known African Americans but also the lesser known. Black history enthusiasts will learn the answers to a variety of interesting questions like who scored 101 points in the first half of a high school basketball game, in what city the first black-owned television station was established, when the freaks come out according to the Whodini song, and Fred Sanford's middle initial. The Ultimate Black History Trivia Book shares two thousand questions in four categories that will help educate anyone interested in learning more about the achievements of African Americans.

I won this book through Goodread's Giveaway.

The Ultimate Black History Trivia Book covers a wide range of topics from people to events, etc. It's great to see such an important aspect of history in one place and the information is interesting. . . I just felt the book's structure wasn't the best to convey this information.

The book is set up like a giant quiz with the questions separated into sections (sports, music, people, etc.). Everything is multiple choice so readers who have some knowledge of these subjects might know the answers, but then the answer key for every single question is in the back of the book, leaving the clueless to flip between the pages in order to learn the answers. There's also no context information. It asks a question, gives options for answers, and moves on. There's no additional fact or context to that question and answer and there's no learning beyond that.

I like the idea of this book and I like the information it's trying to get accross. But as a YA librarian, I know the kids aren't likely to get absorbed in this book. They might skim it but without pictures or illustrations or anything to break up the long list of test questions, it's not likely to do well with the young adults the book it marketed at.
