REVIEW: REVENGE OF THE FAE is the first instalment in Carly Fall’s contemporary, adult THE FORBIDDEN FAE paranormal series focusing on half-Fae Avery Dubois.
In the world of the supernaturals not everyone gets along including the rift between the shifters and the Fae. Working at a construction site with a group of wolves is only the beginning of a downward spiral that finds our heroine the survivor of a sexual assault, the murder of her mother, and the questionable investigation by a potentially dirty cop. Finding herself imprisoned in a jail for the supernatural, our heroine is once again targeted, only to be rescued by were-shifter and prison guard Gabe, whose own ‘mother’ is a powerful Fae. What ensues is the search for the person responsible for Avery’s mother’s death, and the hunt for the truth.
REVENGE OF THE FAE is a story of betrayal, revenge and the discrimination between supernatural species. Carly Fall pulls the reader into an imaginative and edgy story of one woman’s struggle to survive in a world that sees her as nothing more than a satisfying lunch. From ravenous vampires to violent shifters REVENGE OF THE FAE is a dramatic and spirited tale of the paranormal.
Avery was half fae and human who worked on a construction site in Seattle. She worked with wolf shifters who constantly tormented her. A new hire, Jake tried assaulting her one night and she defended herself but was fired by the boss. When she got home two officers were waiting for her at her door to inform her her mother had been murdered. One of them was a fae named McAllister. When she went to identify the body she noticed vampire marks on her mother’s neck and the apartment had been trashed and all religious icons were missing. After that, Avery’s world went downhill! She breaks into McAllister’s apartment to steal her mother’s file but ends up going to Spectral Prison after a run in with two vampires trying to escape McAllister. There she meets Cat and Danica, who happens to be Jack’s mate. The alpha from Jack’s pack paid her a visit and had apologized for his actions and made sure Jack paid for his crimes. Danica wanted revenge on Avery for those punishments. Avery ends up in solitary to protect her from Danica where she met a shifter guard named Gabe. Gabe offered her a solution after hearing about the crime against her mother and she had another fight with Danica. Once she escaped with Gabe’s help, they went in search of McAllister and the vampire who was guilty for crimes against Gabe’s pack as well. They found what they were searching for..what happened? What were the real reasons for the murders and stolen artifacts? What were the connections between these crimes, the vamp, McAllister, Gabe and Avery? This is the first book in the series that will connect Gabe and Avery on multiple journeys to solve crimes. It is a fast-paced read full of action and will keep you entertained and you cannot help but feel lots of sympathy for Avery as she keeps finding trouble no matter what she does! I received this book for free and am leaving a voluntary review! On to the next book!

Avery was a regular girl or seemed that way. She was a half-breed, half-fae, and half-human, but ever since her fae father left her and her mother, she has rejected the fae side of her. Now her mother was dead. The fae cop told her that it probably was a crime gone wrong, but she had seen how battered she was, and she saw the vampire bite on her mom’s neck. Avery knew that he was not telling her the truth, and the truth she would have. In her quest for the truth, she ended up in paranormal prison where she met the wolf shifter and guard Gabe. Unlike other shifters, he did not treat her with disdain or contempt because of the long rivalry between the two species. This is where they discovered that their cases might be linked, and now they had that, among other things, to figure out.
I liked this story, and I’m glad it is part of a series so I can get more of it. Gabe and Avery’s back story is full and rich in diversity from the societal norms of this novel, and the descriptions of the world almost make you feel as if you are standing on the corner and looking at what is being written about.
I think you will like this book if you like action & adventure or maybe if you like fantasy. Paranormal readers might like this also, or those who like the curiosity, frustration, and confusion of love and lust mixed together and called romance. I give this fantasy five stars out of five stars.
Avery Dubois is a half-fae but has never had contact with the fae side of her family and so acts as if she is just an ordinary human. She works on a construction site and when a close family member is murdered she notices that the murderer wasn't human which sets her on a path against authority and into danger. Gabe is a were-shifter prison guard and it appears a theft from his pack is related to the murder so into return for what information she has he breaks her out of prison. This is complicated as shifters and fae have had a mistrust of each other for several generations so they both don't know if they can trust the other. Can they work together to solve the mystery, or will they both end up dead?
I really enjoyed this story. It had a nice level of detail of the characteristics of the various paranormal races and their relationships with each other. The plot was interesting and the connection between the two cases was enough to connected Avery and Gabe together as was their need to find the truth. The story was reasonably well written and everything was easy to understand. An enjoyable story that made me wonder if this is the end of their working relationship or will they have a need to work together again in the future.
This is the first book I have read by this author. I have to say I loved it. It was well written and had a great storyline. I loved the characters also. This author pulls you right in to the paranormal world. She has a way of making you feel as if this is possible. This book is the story of Avery who is a Fae and Gabe he is a shifter. It has a lot of different paranormal creatures in it. This was a great book I highly recommend it!!! I got book 2 also, it is that good.
2 1/2 stars. A decent urban fantasy. The plot is interesting. Avery is determined to find out what happened to her mother no matter what it costs. However, I think she does act a bit insane, even though she is grief stricken. She also does a bit too much woe is me.
I did like how Avery is friends with a vampire even though most don't believe it is possible. In addition, Gabe and Avery don't really trust each other so it takes time for that to develop; they don't immediately blindly trust each and it shows in their actions. Smart. Realistic. I like that.
I found this story interesting. Lots going on. I liked the characters quite a bit. There is some strong profanity that I wasn't thrilled about and a couple of scenes I would hesitate before letting my teen read. Nothing explicit-an intense attack scene and noises through a prison wall, not too much but definitely grown up enough for me to hesitate recommending to teens.
It is hard to rate a book that just wasn't your favorite. The characters were good and the story move along well. I just did not like Avery, the main character, or the police officer. The story was original but not one that held my interest. I think I like a bit more complex than this one.
Murder, mayhem, werewolves, vampires, bad cops and fae... All she wanted to do was find out who killed her mother but things go from bad to worse. A fast paced adventure that you can't put down once th begin!! Now to see if a fae and werewolf can work together...
