But the Doctor's dark side - and Time Lord physiology - give birth to a horrendously real 'id' that rampages through the station! Has the Doctor's carefree approach to planning finally met a threat that he can't charm or think he way out of?

Meanwhile, Captain Jack has left the TARDIS, and is tracking down more information about his missing years - time and memories he had erased while working as a Time Agent.

When the object of an assassination he was supposedly responsible for turns up alive and well, Jack must delve deep into the past he would rather leave behind, in order to prove worthy of the TARDIS crew...

The Doctor infiltrates a mental institution to see exactly what's going on with its peculiar new medical practices, before finding himself the subject of an intergalactic auction with the fate of the universe relying on its outcome.

The Sin Eaters story is one I'd love to see play out on the small screen; it's claustrophobic action through a mental facility, and it has some very good Who moral quandaries to deal with along the way. I do love that Cavan Scott has leaned into the Ninth Doctor's guilt about the Time War, it's really helped frame the stories in this series in a light that it would otherwise have avoided, and has worked very well as a propulsion system to drive the plot forward.

The last three issues bring Captain Jack back to close down his arc, as well as pulling on plot points from everything going back to the original Ninth Doctor mini-series. Delving into Jack's memories and watching the Doctor on a galactic stage gives this all both a personal feeling and a very sweeping, season finale-esque level of grandiosity. The ending feels a little rushed in that it jettisons one of the companions very quickly, but I think she pops back up in one of the other Doctor ongoings, so I'll let it slide.

Not a lot to say on the art front, as Cris Belson and Adriana Melo double-team the volume in much the same way as the last three.

A strong ending to the series. These two stories capitalise on everything that Cavan Scott has laid out in the earlier volumes, bringing all three characters to new places and giving us some solid Who action too.

Another kinda dark story involving the ninth doctor. That basically involved the mass destruction of almost an entire planet. I think that the Doctor Who stories sometimes ignore the mass destruction. Still and enjoyable story.

Three stories in which stuff gets sucked out of the protagonists' heads and, quelle surprise, our heroes turn out to have dark sides - I think it's meant to be thematic, but it feels more repetitive.

Such a fun string of adventures! Love that we learnt a bit about Jack’s past and got a glimpse into the Time Agency. High stakes and great worldbuilding that knitted all of the different plot points of this comic series together. Good stuff!

I almost gave this four stars. Maybe I'll change my mind and go ahead with that. I still can't decide why exactly these Doctor Who comics from Titan don't sit quite right with me. There are times when the characters just fall into cliche, but there are other when things read very genuine. The art is fine. No complaints there. But there's just something off about them that I can't really put my finger on. One thing I particularly liked about this collection was that later half featured Captain Jack Harkness (one chapter was all Captain Jack!) and that's why I'm really leaning toward that 4 star rating. ...But I just can't seem to find it in myself to do so.

Sin Eaters is the fourth volume in Titan Comics Ninth Doctor series. The novel opens with the head of The Hesguard Institute in the 53rd Century learning that an Earth Examiner is on the way, the examiner is Rose, who is there to check on patient 280, otherwise known as the Doctor. The Doctor is being given a new experimental treatment to remove his negative impulses and transfer them into an "inert" Sin Eater automaton. However, when the transfer occurs, the Sin Eaters go berserk and start killing the staff and patients at the Institute. The Doctor, it seems, is undercover. He knows that the process used by the Hesguard Institute doesn't cure patients, it just makes them worse and more violent. Furthermore, he cites as examples, incidents from the future. Also, because he is a telepath, having his emotions and feelings transferred to one of the Sin Eaters makes it alive but only a creature devoted to anger. The Doctor, Rose, and Tara escape and the Institute is destroyed.
The second story is about Capt. Jack Harkness and his experiences as a Time Agent. Jack liked his job until he was sent to assassinate Zlov Volh, someone he discovers isn't the dictator and murderer he thinks but actually an inventor who would invent "free time travel" for all. that still seems dangerous, but Jack starts to question his life. He does to stop himself from shooting Volh but then he is hit by an eradicator - a device that moves someone out of time entirely. However, the Doctor and Rose, using a memsphere, find out Jack wasn't removed from time - he was kidnapped by transmat.
The Doctor explains to Rose and Tara that the latest 53rd century "social media" outlet is memgram, where users can share memories using the memsphere. They begin to experience Jack's memories and realise that someone is selling them as "premium content". The person behind the plot is Addison Delamar, the owner of Memgram Inc. Yet behind her scam to reel in Jack and con him is a worse plot: to sell the Doctor's memories of the Time War to the highest bidder. Several bidders are involved, including the Cybermen, who take over and attack. One of the Doctor's memories is of the Time Lords releasing the Great Vampires whom they think will be an ally against the Daleks. The Cybermen infect Delamar with a Cybermat, turning her into a partial Cyberperson. This starts a war on the planet between the space fleets and the Cybermen. Jack, Rose, and Tara use the memspheres to turn the tables and get the various space fleets to attack each other instead of the planet. The Doctor's memories, of grief and suffering, are released through the memsphere and everyone backs off. Finally, Jack gives Delamar a memsphere of his own memories letting her think it's the Doctor's and she leaves. Tara decides to stay behind on the suffering war-torn planet where her skills as a nurse can be used to help others.
This novel also didn't quite hit the Ninth Doctor Era - too many social media in-jokes. I also found Rose and Jack a little out of character. Still the artwork is beautiful, and even though the story is confusing it is a good story. Recommended.

This book features two Doctor Who stories in Issues 11-15.

The two issue story, the Sin Eaters finds the Doctor in an institute for the criminally insane for originally murdering his companion Tana with Rose undercover as an Earth Examiner. The institute's treatment involves sucking all the negative aspsects of a person into a Sin Eater. The problem when doing that Doctor leads to a disaster.

The three issue story is about Captain Jack and his quest to find out about his past, recover memories, and stop himself from killing someone. There are a lot of twists in this story and some sure to please fans. The ending of Tana's story (for now) is thought.

Overall, I enjoyed both of these stories, but really thought they could have been better with more space. The big concepts in the first story really could have gone in three issues. The same could be said of the next story, though I think the Doctor lite issue of the Arc is a bit over-indulgent in that regards. The art in the last issue isn't quite as good as the rest of the book.

Still, I enjoyed this quie a bit. The Ninth Doctor Series didn't get a Second Year, so this is all we're going to get. I have to say I'm really thankful for Titan for giving us 20 issues with the Ninth Doctor. It's practically another season and given Eccleston's all-too brief time as the Doctor, this has definitely been welcomed.

The first story sees the Doctor go to a mental health institute where his 'bad' emotions get sucked away into another being. Which isn't exactly a cure, and the Doctor is out to prove it! Very interesting premise seeing all the of the Doctor's pain and regret and anger sucked out but then it turns into some crazy hulk monster thing and becomes more smash 'em up.

Second story is following up on the Jack story in previous volumes, featuring a far-off future wanting to sell memories as virtual experiences. And whose memories are more fascinating than the Doctor? I like the pitch, but watching the Doctor and his companions decide to just... scan every memory on the planet one by one felt silly. And 'we will make everyone REALLY sad' is also silly. I liked the premise but didn't like how it was solved.

This last volume for this run of the Ninth Doctor comic clearly had to wrap-up a lot of plot elements with the biggest one being Jack's missing memories. the resulting story was a bit of a shock since we shifted to the Doctor having been arrested for murder and the incarceration involving draining all of his negative thoughts into another vessel. Bad idea, totally.

The final explanation for the memory loss felt a little underwhelming and could have been a one-off story and not something teased at for so long. The big finale did feel like it tried to become a true Doctor Who season finale style story but the threat level and the stakes weren't as amazing. Still good and a solid enough ending, but not like mind-blowing.

Very nice conclusion to the Ninth Doctor adventures! The first story about the Sin Eaters was an interesting concept and I thought it flowed really well. My favorite part of the paperback was the middle part about Jack, the Time Agendy and his quest to find out more about his missing memories. There is never enough info in Doctor Who and Torchwood, so this was really great to read more about this. The last story concludes the two previous stories. I found the memory orbs a bit confusing at first, but overall it was a great conclusion. Loved the artwork throughout. The only complain I might have is that it was a really great story idea, but to tell everything in one paperback is not enough space. But that's the case often with comics.

I dunno, I liked the artwork and 9 seemed like 9 in this book, but what bugs me the most is Jack and the Doctor. So that spoiler there is why I gave it lower stars, because that just doesn't sit right with me. Some of the stories seemed a little weirder than normal, but it had to be that way to play out later on. Still, a readable edition, just not overly enjoyable.

Last in the series of Ninth Doctor comics from Titan, this has the Doctor dealing with a creature constructed from his id, a bit of Jack’s back story, Rose called on to save the day and only a small role for the promising UNIT companion Tara. There’s also a bit of commentary on social media. I thought the first story would have made a great TV episode if there had been a second Ninth Doctor series, and enjoyed the rest though it was a bit uneven in places.

By far the best of The Ninth Doctor Adventures, has 2 really fun stories that play with really cool concepts which are good enough that I would love the show to have a crack at themselves. Sin Eaters are a regular baddie of the week, but being introduced through The Doctor's own sin eater really sells the concept better, and the design of The Doctor's sin eater was simultaneously crazy and fun. The second story with the memory spheres and the sequences that come with that were an amazing read, probably spawning the best pages of the Ninth Doctor comics. Seeing an extended sequence of Rose in The Doctor's place, wearing his outfit was just a great time.

A nice conclusion to what has been a solid run for the ninth doctor.

The large holes in Jacks backstory which the show left rather unfilled are solved in a satisfying way, I especially enjoyed how Jack lost the memories of him having lost his memories, explaining why he doesn't seem to care about his missing two years in the show from the episode 'Boom Town' onwards.

The biggest strength across all 20 issues has to be how well Cavan writes Nine Rose and Jack. He has a clear grasp on their voices and personalities which make what could be quite disposable stories (inbetweenasodes often have this problem) very worthwhile and entertaining to read.

I had mixed feelings about this graphic novel. I almost gave it three stars what saved it for me was learning about Jack's background and his time with the time bureau. It really fills in a lot why Jack is Jack.

I liked the story of the Doctor and Rose it felt very Doctor Who because of that I knew something bad was going to happen and it did. I am not fond of the Ninth Doctor or Rose and that rubbed me the wrong way. I will be honest enough to admit if the story featured any other Doctor and companion I would have liked it better.

These stories have smartly revolved around the Doctor's guilt over the Time War. I know we don't see much of it until later on the show but it makes sense here in these additional stories. So first the Doctor goes to a prison to investigate the Sin Eaters and it of course, all goes to shit. This would have made a good episode. Then everything culminates with the Doctor's memories of the Time War as events from book one come back to bite the Doctor. Of course, it all works out though. Good stuff.

This final volume of Titan's Ninth Doctor comic includes one of the most dangerous foes the Doctor could face, plus some interesting new details on Captain Jack's background. Unfortunately, these neat ideas seem to get resolved just a little too quickly, as if they were in a hurry to wrap things up; they also don't do much with their new supporting character. Still good overall, but I feel like it would have been even better with more time. (B+)

I feel like this didn't really tie into the end of volume 3 like I thought it would, unless I'm forgetting something. The Captain Jack story was my least favorite. And the War Doctor makes a couple cameo appearances, but it still feels like the comics don't know what to do with him. Overall, this was an underwhelming final volume for the Ninth Doctor's series.

An unfortunate end to an unfortunate series. Tara fails to become a character in her own right and just... exists. The first story feels like it doesn't belong in the Whoniverse at all and the second story is underwhelming. But I will say that Scott writes dialogue that reads as authentic to the characters.

This is a strong conclusion to Titans Eccleston arc which adds lustre and depth to his one run.

What’s behind Jacks missing memories ?
Were the time lords really so desperate in the time war that they called on their ancestral enemies the great vampires?

Not one of my favorite Doctor Who. It had good plots, but focused on the darker side of the Doctor. Added to that Tara and Rise were basically useless.
