Seed is the pastor of a large church in Southern California. Based on his experience answering difficult questions often posed by both Christians and non-Christians about God and Christianity, Seed wrote this book. He addresses six big picture questions: Is God real? Is the Bible true? Do all roads lead to heaven? How can a good God allow suffering? Which is right: Evolution or Creation? What happens when I die?” Each question is broken into several chapters that address sub-questions that taken in totality attempt to address the larger question. For example, to answer the question whether the Bible is true, Seed addresses: Where did the Bible come from? How is the Bible different from other books? What about errors in the Bible? What does the Bible say about itself? Was the Bible written by man or God? Seed does a good job of balancing Scripture verses with general logic and reasoning, and the prose is not dense like seminary books on the same topics. In addition, the last chapter includes discussion questions for each of the chapters so that you can use this book as a church small group curriculum. Some of the answers tend to be a bit reductive because the book is meant for a broader audience and not as a seminary text for apologetics, but a solid resource for the lay audience.
This book, sadly, left me quite disappointed with what could have been. Throughout the reading, Hal is really imprecise with his language, consistently using extreme quantifiers (all, always, proof, etc.) that are completely unjustified, seriously exaggerated or even wholly incorrect citations (conservation of mass/energy and gravity being "proven" by the bible, for example), and many, many blatant logical fallacies. The only redeeming factor of this book is that it provides a standard Christian argument and explanation for many of these questions in very layman's terms and at a slow pace, so if you were looking for that, this could be a reference. Other than that, the book itself has very little—I was very lucky to have a friend with expertise on the matter, which enabled fun discussions and further thought that arose from the broad questions or topic being addressed, rather than the book's content. I give it two stars only out of great gratitude for that friend—this is significantly below the books I've given three stars.
For a non Christian, it explains the major God questions in detail. Is God real? is the Bible True? What about these other religions? If God was a loving god, why does he let bad things happen.
For the Christian, it gives you the means to answer all these questions and more. It may even answer questions you yourself has about If God.... What if.....
Either for a new Christian or someone who has been a Christian for a while, it's a good simple way to get to the core of these common questions with basic answers via scripture, history and theology. Easy to understand.
