DSS Special Agent Payton Ladd is just about to go on a well-deserved vacation when he’s called back to the field. The nephew of an American senator has gone missing in Baghdad. Payton must go straight to the Green Zone to find him, but it won’t be easy.  Nobody tells the truth, everyone seems to be pushing their own agenda, and, most troubling of all, Payton is compelled to work with his ex-girlfriend, RSO Catherine McCabe, to solve the case.

Even though this book is filled with technical militar

Note: I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Sadly, this was just not for me. I think that the premise is interesting, and that getting to read from an inside point of view (albeit fiction) of what goes on in other countries with the US Embassy and war zones is quite intriguing. However, the way that the story flowed didn't appeal to me much.

I also found the writing to be a bit repetitive at times. Bertolina can definitely create a story, and I'm no

Interesting and exciting

Well plotted and characters are well drawn. I thoroughly enjoyed this trip into “action and adventure” land. Not my usual genre but this was fun and informative. I’ll read author again.

You won't want to put it down. Mr. Bertolina takes USC into a world that makes you quiver as you turn the pages. A strange love affair is in the mix but it helps salve the world of such greed and lack of mercy. ...more

I appreciate how much detail went into this novel. It is well written, understandable for someone like me. There is a lot of technical weapon jargon that is unfamiliar to me, yet I was able to follow along and didn't find myself wondering what they were talking about. In the end, it all seemed to work for me as a reader who is not so knowledgeable in military protocol and the kinds of methods used. I enjoyed the characters a lot and felt they were well defined and didn't all seem the same, as in ...more

I read a lot of psychological thrillers, but every once in a while I need a palette cleanser. I can only take so many 'did their husband, wife or lover do its' before I need a brief break. This time, I turned to I. James Bertolina for some solid action adventure. Good thing too, because he totally delivered! This story reeks of the dangerous, lawless Old West, but on steroids, in the modern day Middle East. Diplomatic Security Service agent Payton Ladd is charged with finding the missing nephew ...more

Twists and turns in USA occupied Iraq

Although, based on Iraq, this story does not center in the Iraqi people or their country.
A senator's son has disappeared last the Safe Green Zone. There is no reason why he should have been there. Readers find there is WAY more going on than a disappeared man.
I learned more than I care to about the BILLIONS of dollars that are given to vetted contractors who are supposed to be working on rebuilding and helping Iraq. All that is explained is that there is a gr
