Environmental Health: From Global to Local offers students a comprehensive introduction to environmental health. It provides an overview of methods and paradigms used in this exciting field, ranging from ecology to epidemiology, from toxicology to environmental psychology, from genetics to ethics to religion. The authors survey the major issues in contemporary environmental health, ranging from global issues such as climate change and war to regional issues such as air, water, transportation, and energy to local issues such as food safety, pest control, and occupational health. The book includes a strong focus on the real-world practice of environmental public health, offering chapters on such applied topics as risk assessment, risk communication, health services, regulations, and legal remedies. While Environmental Health is grounded in the U.S. experience, it emphasizes global issues and perspectives on such topics as economic development, population, urbanization, and sanitation. So much more could’ve been done to being this book to life, but alas. It was very informative and the summary sections at the end of each chapter were helpful. Really would liked to see a glossary, but only an index was provided. The pages were dull, with very few pictures. Graphs and diagrams were all done in black and green. Some high gloss pages filled with pictures and captions would have gone miles with having to get thru this book (which was my required textbook for enviro Health).
Read for Environmental Health class for my MPH program. Pretty good overview, although with the idiots in DC revoking/repealing so many environmental protection regulations, I fear this title is going to be out of date soon.
bonus...it was available for free via the University's library online book collection.
Read this book as a part of an Environmental Science course during undergrad. It explained complex topics well and would suggest to anyone looking to get an understanding of environmental health and systems thinking for sustainability initiatives.
