I read an advance copy of this novel and this is my blurb which appears on the back cover:

"Harry Miller masterfully weaves an offbeat story of love amidst chaos in 17th century China. Steeped in cultural and literary minutiae, the novel bristles with heart and wit. Miller’s writing is luminous and animated and his expansive research shines through. An intoxicating work of historical fiction."

This is a curious novel. It tells the story of a young man, Nanyu – which means ‘Southern Rain’ – and the clever and quick-witted young woman, Daosheng, with whom he falls in love. A provocative, masterful work of historical fiction

These are compelling characters in a dramatic setting unfamiliar to many western readers. Harry Miller brings his nuanced understanding of the diplomatic, military, and cultural aspects of this dramatic period to life around a star-crossed husband and wife who try to find a little justice and happiness in an world both brutal and beautiful.
The history also explores how the privileged members of an advanced society can suddenly be deprived of

Having read several books on the subject under the tutelage of the author, I anticipated it to be as significant in my thoughts as any required reading was for me in college. I was surprised. This novel has captivated me, and only by reading it twice do I feel like I managed to glean a small portion of the brilliance of Dr. Miller. It was a fantastic read, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone even remotely interested in historical fiction.
