Bloody Bougainville

Rate this book
Outnumbered GIs tasked with an impossible defense against a desperate force of Japanese soldiers. A forgotten battle on a hellish island in the Northern Solomons.

Sergeant Carver and Able Company are veterans of Guadalcanal. After much needed rest they’re thrown back into combat with untested recruits.

With the help from veterans like Corporal O’Connor, the woodsman from Oregon, and Private Willy, the thug from the city, they must mold the replacements to become the veterans they’re trying to replace.

The mission is like nothing they’ve tackled before. They’re not meant to take the island, but to defend the six-mile beachhead. It’s a bloody and thankless job, in a forgotten corner of the war.

The Japanese are slowly starving. They must push the Allies back into the sea at any cost. Their only advantage is superior numbers.

The GIs will need a miracle, and even then it may not be enough.

The title says it all

The book describes in great detail the hardships and horrors that marines and soldiers faced fighting the Japanese. An enemy that would not surrender and was brutal. It's a great read and Mr. Glatte does an amazing job bringing the characters to life.

This is the second installment in a series. While I feel it could stand alone on its own merits, as with most series, the reading experience is heightened if the book is read in its order in the series. As with the first installment, this book continues the rapid paced, action filled story line. As a work of fiction, it has the necessary ingredient of believability. It also highlights often overlooked battles in the Pacific that are rarely covered.

Intense action as patrols venture deep into enemy territory in search of secrets

Hard fought attacks and hand-to-hand combat as entrenched American forces fight the best the Imperial Japanese Army has to offer. Excellent characters and realistic situations as the tough realities of battles are filtered through glimpses into individual and small unit action. Well worth the time.

Great story of a forgotten battle

One chapter of a mostly forgotten battle. Seems most book of the WW II land battles are about USMC, not that they didn't do their part. This book really keeps you in great focus. Seeing parts through both American and Japanese eyes, yes it's fiction but good reading.

Bloody Bougainville

Another well written historical fiction based on actual events. The main characters are well developed and, for the most part, believable. Some of the situations are difficult to believe, but it works. The reader will feel they are right there on the battlefield. Recommend reading for those who want a taste of WW-2 in the Pacific.

Good reading

The history of that story was real and this book was pretty well-written. It really captured the fanatical dedication of the Japanese. It could have used closer editing as there were several descriptions

Felt every muddy footstep

Excellent blend of historical elements of the battle for bouga
inville with fictional heros to cheer for. My only suggestion would a map to track the movements.

Good read

My neighbor was marine grunt. Had 3 purple hearts. Got bit by a cent piece on bouts involve. Centipede!
Gave him aspirin for a few days and put him back to work killing Japanese. Centipedes on bougainville are very poisoning.

War is never pretty

Although this story is a work of fiction I felt like the men in the story were showing what combat in the Pacific was like. The writing is good. However I did run across a couple of places that needed a better editing job, but they were minor problems in the flow of the story. The action comes fast and furious throughout the story. If you like war stories this one of a series to read.

AS GOOD AS IT GETS

Mr. Glatte is as good as anyone when writing combat action scenario's. I think that he has read a few to many Sgt. Rock comic books as a child.
