Mewranters: Attack of the Sea Monster by Kachi Ugo is the story of Perry Johnson, a boy who wakes up on his twelfth birthday to an austere coming of age ritual that only a child who is also a Mew - the protectors of the planet from fantastical creatures unknown to everyday humans - would have no choice but to participate in. Having barely skated by as just average his whole life, Perry is pushed off of a cliff during his initiation and takes the surprising form of a giant golden eagle to the sho ...more

Kachi Ugo's Mewranters: Attack of the Sea Monster follows Perry Johnson, a twelve year old boy who, like the rest of his family, is a Mewranter:

“Mews have existed since the dawn of time...We are like a force for good, preventing evil from growing rampant in the world.”

Perry only knew that his family was special, but just how special they were was the shock of a lifetime. His first test is to learn his aerial form and, morphing into a giant golden eagle that brings with it an immediate danger t

Mewranters was a fun read. There's people that turn into birds, a sea monster that attacks, and... that's pretty much it. I liked Mewranters because of the action and the middle-grade-esque plot, which isn't a bad thing; in fact, middle-grade is one of my favorite genres, so don't think of this as a bad thing. I liked this book; however, it was so short that I felt there could have been a lot more pumped into the story if it

I really thought it was an okay-book. My main beef was with the writing, which I did not enjoy.

I posted a spoiler-free review on my Instagram and you can check it out here- https://www.instagram.com/p/BqngSGcnc...

3 stars.

I personally love middle-grade books. One of my favourite all time series is a middle grade series. With middle-grade books I just adore how easily the writing flows off the pages and how I don't really have to overthink things.

This book is about a boy named Perry Johnson. It starts off with Perry on his birthday, knowing he's about to take a test he will most likely fail. Turns out he's a Mewranter just like the rest of family. If you love sea monsters, birds

A coming of age story the entire family will love - this is written with clarity and magic that even very young readers will understand and appreciate for all of the values that Ms. Ugo teaches here. Lots of adventure for little Perry and which force him to make choices that may put his loved ones in peril. Keeps you on the edge of your seat to see if he has the courage within him to defeat the monster he didn't expect to encounter. A lovely fantasy depicting that even in the darkest o

Mewranter is a story of Perry Johnson, who when wakes up on his 11th birthday knows something is going to happen, a ritual to be precise. A ritual about which he knows nothing but knows his siblings totally nailed whatever the ritual is. Being average for most of life Perry desperately wants to give his best in ritual. However, after ritual his life turns upside down.

I absolutely loved Mewranters. In terms of story, book was quite predictable but what made this book awesome was the univ

Magical adventure

This is a great story, and it brings to life the character of Perry. He's an interesting character, on an adventure. He has a purpose, to save his parents from a sea monster, but only if he transforms into an Eagle. It's a wonderful fantasy with hints of action and the strength of the characters, but no only the protagonist, the antagonist as well. A well-written tale of adventure and conflict with the sea monster.

I wanted to love this book. It started off fantastic and completely sucked me in. However, my excitement was premature, as it seemed to stall around the 15-20% point. I think a few more rounds of editing could have elevated this story from mediocre to amazing as well as resolving some of the plot inconsistencies, grammatical errors, pacing and tone.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC.

From the description of this book, I really thought that I would love it. Unfortunately, I found the writing style to be very stilted and lacking detail. There wasn't enough world building and the dialogue between the characters didn't seem realistic. It felt more like an outline than an actual book which was very disappointing because it has such potential to be a great story.
Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Writing has always been my passion. When I was twelve, while my mates still flipped through picture books and comics, I took an interest in thick-sized, picture-less “story books” that opened me up to a whole new world of possibilities and adventures. However, I did not publish my first book until my second year in Pharmacy School when I’d usually learn about drugs in the day and write fiction in ...more
