本书是由“悬念大师”希区柯克自导的悬念故事集，每个小故事都或多或少包含了恐怖、悬疑、超自然等元素，每集开始都是由导演本人拉开序幕，等到故事完毕，又由导演本人闭幕总结。
希区柯克对杀人狂的一段评论，很典型地表明了他对这类人的态度，他说：“人们常常认为，罪犯与普通人是大不相同的。但就我个人的经验而言，罪犯通常都是相当平庸的人，而且非常乏味，他们比我们日常生活中遇到的那些遵纪守法的老百姓更无特色，更引不起人们的兴趣。罪犯实际上是一些相当笨的人，他们的动机也常常很简单、很俗气”。

阿尔弗莱德·希区柯克（1899-1980）是举世公认的“悬念大师”。他生于伦敦，1925年开始独立执导电影。1939年应邀去好莱坞，次年拍摄了《蝴蝶梦》，并获得该年度奥斯卡最佳影片金像奖，从此定居美国直到逝世。为了表彰他对电影艺术作出的突出贡献，1979年，美国电影艺术与科学学院授予他终身成就奖。1980年，英国女王伊丽莎白二世封他为爵士。
希区柯克是一位对人类精神世界高度关怀的艺术家，他一生导演监制759部电影，300多部电视系列剧，绝大多数以人的紧张、焦虑、窥探、恐惧等为叙事主题，设置悬念，故事情节惊险曲折，引人人胜，令人拍案叫绝。
