If you can help it, try to avoid allowing this book as a "bedtime story book." This is another go-to book for my kid at bedtime right now. While I appreciate the quality and variety of words and illustrations, it's a pretty dry and tedious read before bed. We have had some interesting conversations over the years with the words though. For example, my kid refused to accept the word "calf"-- it was a "baby cow, actually" for a couple weeks. Right now at 3, he says, "that's silly, dogs don't say baa" when we get to sheepdog. We also like to talk about the foods we like to eat. Unfortunately, this is one of those books where if I "accidentally" skip a page, he doesn't notice until later, and then we have to read the rest of the book again, which I dread, so that's one reason why I will give it 3 stars.
