Born in 1993, HDA gained his obsession with fantasy, magic & sci-fi early in his life with the help of his parents and life long friend Joanna. Giving him the first book he ever truly read alone, Joanna set him off with a story that has inspired him even now. Lord Loss by Darren Shan. Having grown up with scotopic syndrome, and the challenges he faced with reading and processing information. Books were the one thing that HDA was able to learn and use to grow out of his need for coloured glasses and overlays on his work. Reading nightly, with many years of help from his mum, HDA admits his writing may never be perfect. A note at the beginning of all of his works, he asks his readers if they can make it past the slight errors that he alone has edited, they will be granted with the stories he, as a storyteller has crafted for them.
With more books flowing out of him daily, HDA cannot wait to spread his stories, it’s characters and their adventures with the world.
This was a fabulously written book the characters are so original and so loveable I enjoyed it thoughly and cant wait to move onto the next one which the author has kindly sent me xx
I didn't make it past a few pages. It may well be very good but I kept tripping on sentences that were confused. Author, please find someone who can show you how to create sentences with clauses that relate. I'll even do it if necessary.
At first, being entirely honest I wasn’t sure I would enjoy this but in 2025 I am determined to read different genres and explore differnt authors so I decided to keep going and I’m really glad I did. Flighty is very fast paced, which I loved and this made it a one sitting read for me. With only being 100 odd pages, I was worried that there would be a huge emphasis on information dumping and not give time to world build, but this was not the case. The use of well structured descriptive language made it easy for me to visualise the characters and the setting, flowing easily through the locations as the flighty moved through the story. We only really meet 3 characters in depth, which I think is a good amount for the length of the book. I love the journey flighty is going on, and think there is an important underlying message to be considered by the reader. Nerdiver is the friend everyone needs, taking accountability and being open and honest, despite never leaving her pond she is open to things that happen in the wider world and I’m hoping her story is explored more in the sequel. I’m really glad I ended up reading this, it’s something I would never usually read but I’m excited to read the rest of the books in this series.
Flighty is an exhilarating read that kept me hooked from start to finish. The fast-paced narrative made it impossible to put down. Despite its brevity, the book masterfully avoids info dumping at the start, allowing the world-building to unfold naturally and seamlessly.
One of the standout features of Flighty is its unique magic system. Instead of overwhelming the reader with explanations, the story gradually reveals the intricacies of the magic and the creatures within the world, making the discovery process both engaging and immersive.
The friendship between Flighty and Nerdiver is beautifully portrayed. I loved how Nerdiver, despite her sheltered existence, exudes a mysterious and wise aura, enriching their dynamic and adding depth to the story.
A particularly intriguing aspect of the book is how the lines between good and bad are blurred. The characters' motives are complex and often surprising, keeping me second-guessing their true intentions throughout the story.
Lastly, the book is peppered with fascinating little hints and foreshadowing that have left me eagerly anticipating the sequel. Flighty is a gem that promises even more excitement and mystery in the books to come.
Flighty is a beautifully crafted novella about a fairy born without wings—an unimaginable hardship in a world where flight defines identity. Living a quiet and hidden life, Flighty has only two close companions, his journey is one of loneliness and resilience
This book was a fantastic and refreshing read, offering something different from the grand, sweeping epics I’m used to. If you love fairies, folklore, and deeply personal stories of overcoming adversity, this is a must-read. Flighty is a tale of longing—for friendship, love, and a place to belong. It explores the struggles of being an outsider with sincerity and heart, making it a touching and memorable read.
Flighty’s dream of flying finally comes true—but at a terrible cost. His journey takes a dark and treacherous turn, filled with danger and uncertainty. Bound by a bargain he never chose, can he find a way to break free, or will he be trapped forever? I can't wait to read about the rest of his adventure with his friend Nerdiver
This story is amazing. It is so perfectly written in a way that I would expect a story to be told. Reminds me of stories my grandmother used to read to me as a child and has some characters such as ‘Master’ who reminds me of the rock creatures from The Never Ending Story and Labyrinth. Truly magical. I really enjoyed the thrill of reading this. I loved the characters and the little bugs. Fairies and Mermaids in a story is definitely a good mix. Looking forward to reading the second book. 😀
‘Flighty’- Book one of the ‘Magical Creature Series’ is in my top 3 books I read in 2018! I read flighty on a whim after eavesdropping on a conversation about it and I was not disappointed. I was drawn into the world of Flighty instantly; avidly following his many trials and tribulations. A great read for any lover of fantasy! ✨
If I were to describe the novella, "Flighty" in one word, it would be wonderful! The story revolves around a fairy named Flighty, who unfortunately was not born with any fairy dust :( Because Flighty has no dust to wield, he does not have the ability to fly (what cruel irony), bloom nature, or pollinate the forest. This leaves Flighty to be outcast among his kind. The only creatures he is close to are his mysterious mermaid best friend, Nerdiver, and his litter sister Spitfire (who I wished could have been more involved in the story).
I personally thought this plot line was quite unique. Who had ever heard of a fairy without fairy dust? I always have a great appreciation when a book has an original plot line. I thought Flighty was such a great character to read about. I truly sympathized with Flighty during this moments of distress of not having dust. Even though Flighty hates that he has no dust, I wished that he could have embraced it. He was a magnificent fairy without the need for any dust! Flighty had the strength and power to build his own dam with his bare hands! He can still be a proactive fairy without any dust for my opinion. Flighty's strength and perseverance can be noted as praiseworthy.
As the story goes by, Flighty's mermaid best friend, Nerdiver, sends Flighty off on a journey to find a cave with a magical well. Whoever drinks from the well will be blessed with a gift. However, Nerdiver tells Flighty that those who are true and deserving will receive their blessing. If their intentions are to do harm, then BOOM! You're DEAD! When Flighty makes it to the well, he started to contemplate if he even wanted to be blessed with dust. When I read this scene, I was mentally flailing my arms and yelling in my heard, "YES!!!! YOU'RE RIGHT!!! YOU DON'T NEED IT!!!! BE PROUD OF WHO YOU ARE!!!!" But then Flighty meets an unexpected friend or foe ;) A rock troll named Master finds Flighty and persuades him to drink from the well. However, by having Master's help from drinking from the well, Flighty owes Master a favor when he one day needs help. However, when Flighty is finally blessed with fairy dust, things suddenly do not go as planned.....
OK! That is all that I will talk about because I do not want to spoil anything else, and I really want you guys to read this novella! If you want to know more about Flighty's story, check out this book on Amazon! Also, please show some love to the author, HDA Pratt. "Flighty" is his first novella he has published on his own, so this novella must be really special to him!
This was an interesting take on the message of " you are perfect the way you are or you are enough".
Flighty was born without any fairy dust and so he couldn't take flight and do what his race was born to do. He was different. (Did Lady GaGa's Born This Way just pop into your head too?) He hears tales of a way to get what he thinks he needs to be normal and to fit in. Naturally, it comes in the form of him owing a favor to someone and he's to come when they call in the favor. What was relatable about this character was he is like so many. All he saw was his flaws and not his strength, which he literally had. Fast forward to his dream coming true and then things falling apart. And then.....Well, you'll have to read it. I'm not giving away spoilers today. The Author delivered a well-structured fantasy novella with a strong message. My only concern was surrounding grammatical errors. While they were not enough to distract from the message, they were noticeable.
I love a good fantasy book but sometimes, I don’t want a deadpan, everything has to be serious story.
With ‘Flighty’ what you get is a fun story with a pure and innocent feel to it. There’s a real sense of almost childlike wonder running through it.
One of the things that caught my eye the most was the dialogue. I read In a couple of reviews that it felt awkward but I don’t agree. I liked the simple fact that Flighty, stumbled over his words when he got super emotional. In fact, it really made me root for the character even more.
There were a couple of minor moments that could have been improved with slightly tighter editing but it didn’t take away from the story for me.
I’m definitely into ready more by the author. In fact, I’ve bought another of his names ‘Worthy’ and can’t wait to read it.
This unique story HDA has created with a simple journey of self discovery is perfect for a Sunday read with magic spilling over every page. Honestly if fairies and magical beings are for you then this dark tale about one fairy who does not have the ability to create dust and fly like the rest of his kind... well you are missing out not adding it to your list.
I cannot wait to see where HDA takes these creatures in this book on the next phase of this series in Nerdiver.
I really enjoyed this book! It was really different and unique. The author did a good job of keeping his readers interested in the whole story. Flighty, the main character, has an interesting personality. Because he cannot fly, he goes on a journey to not only find the fairy dust he lacks, but to find his true self. The only flaw in this novella was the grammar and punctuation mistakes that can easily be fixed.
Ho trovato il libro semplice ma piacevole. Molto scorrevole e con fantastiche descrizioni. Nonostante i pochi elementi (pochi personaggi, poche vicende) non risulta banale o scarno. Sono soddisfatta della lettura!
3.5 stars ✨ I was given this copy by the author for free, so thank you very much
This book was a lovely book to read, it is a short story that can easily be read within one sitting.
I am excited to start the next book
Why 3.5 stars ✨ I have enjoyed the book but I do feel that the book could have been a bit longer and gone into more detail/ depth on some aspects such as flighty’s trip to the well as I feel that was quite short, since it was meant to be a quest I feel that it could have gone into how it was more of a challenge for him and how overcoming some of the tasks could show some progress with his thoughts and skills.
I do get why it is a short book and don’t get me wrong I do love a short story that you can finish so fast.
This book has been about a showing that people can face their challenges with the right people around them no matter who or what they are. Showing that an individual can be stronger than what they originally thought they were.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was such a lovely and charming fantasy novella! I normally don't enjoy first person POVs but it was done well in this book, a good practice of "show, don't tell". I LOVED the descriptions of the forest environs and the different creatures that live in it. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys fantasy / magical creature books but doesn't like books that overwhelm you with too much information. I'm excited to continue the series, especially Nerdiver's story! I love the friendship between Flighty and Nerdiver!
Flighty is a beautifully written easy read fantasy with lots of magical creatures. It follows Flighty who is a fairy without the magic to fly. If you enjoy fantasy, folklores and stories of over coming adversity then this is for you. The descriptions within the book are done well without being overwhelming. Sometimes it’s nice to read a book that doesn’t use to much brain power to keep up with it. I read this book within a few hours and will be going on to Nerdiver next.
