Rate this book
When Paul Smith travels to the south of France for a sales conference, events conspire to drag him into a world of kidnappings, blackmail and murder.

Following a violent incident, Paul instinctively offers refuge to a girl he believes to be a vulnerable lost soul in a desperate situation, only to find that all is not as it appears. Unwittingly, he finds himself caught between competing international crime syndicates as they go to war, and two powerful Russian families as they fight for control of a vast Russian conglomerate.

What begins as a routine business trip to Nice, turns into a journey of self-discovery that takes him to some of the most glamorous locations on the Cote d’Azur. Paul is compelled to confront each new escalating threat in turn, while his neatly ordered world spirals relentlessly out of control.

As events unfold, he is forced to challenge everything he thought he knew about himself, before finally embracing the danger and brutal violence he encounters along the way.

Can Paul get to the truth, and does he have what it takes to keep those he cares about safe, and himself alive?

This is an intriguing crime thriller with a dash of romance to add to the mix. It relates events that happened at different times, moving from one time and location to another in the initial chapters and starting in St Petersburg, Russia, back in 2011. This time slipping is used effectively to enable the reader to understand some of the background information to the events and characters. The "hero" of the story is Paul Smith who travels from England to attend a sales conference in Nice, an area he is already familiar with after holidaying there for several years and exploring the area with his wife. This visit she'll not be joining him and he thinks he'll have time to rethink their relationship which is breaking down. However, being a gentleman and trying to help someone places him right in the centre of dramatic, life threatening scenarios as two Russian families seek control of a huge conglomerate and international crime syndicates go to war.

The story has a comparatively slow, steady, start but then accelerates considerably as Paul has to constantly reevaluate his basic life tenets if he is to survive, developing into an action packed, thrilling page turner. With kidnapping, rescues, blackmail, murder, lies and deception, Paul will need determination and resilience to keep himself and those he cares for safe. Being involved in such desperate situations has Paul looking at his life and options with new insights, making new contacts and developing new relationships. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat as the story unfolds but there are also humorous comments to keep you smiling. It is an adventurous, dangerous escape, with 'James Bond' style encounters of every kind. Paul certainly won't be the same, ever again if he manages to survive this!

I'll just warn you that the story does end on a cliffhanger, though most aspects are resolved. I have to hope that means there'll be a sequel to continue the story in the not too distant future - I'm keeping my fingers figuratively crossed that there will be and soon!

I requested and was given a copy of this book which I chose to read and honestly review.
