After graduating with 1st class honours (in maths, not fantasy writing!), I worked with computers for several years before redundancy convinced me that working with horses might be healthier.
I spent the next decade working in various horse racing yards, and kept on writing. "Song Quest" was eventually published in 1999 and went on to win the Branford Boase Award for best debut children's novel by a UK author.

Radnja je smeštena u Dve zemlje, odnosno Egipat, u vreme vladavine faraona kafrea i građenja njegove piramide. Kako najveći deo hrane odlazi radnicima koji grade piramidu, ukidaju se sledovanja hrane porodicama onih koji ne rade.
Naš glavni lik, Senu, je dečak koji uči za pisara, ali mu pisanje hijeroglifa ne ide najbolje, on je jedini od dece svog uzrasta koji nije oslobodio svog kaa - svog dvojnika, materijalnu dušu - te stoga biva uključen u pljačku Velike - Keopsove - piramide, kako bi njegov ka, odvlačio pažnju kau faraona, dok radnici iz piramide kradu zlato kako bi obezbedili svoje porodice.
Naravno, ništa ne ide po planu. Radnja je puna pohlepnih pojedinaca, nedužnih koji stradaju i užasnih izdaja. Na Senuova pleća pada spasavanje svih kojima preti stradanje zbog pohlepe jednog čoveka.
Knjiga je odlična i uživala sam u čitanju, ali sam je ocenila sa tri zvezdice jer se sećam da su neke od ostalih knjiga iz ovog serijala koje sam ranije čitala još bolje od ove i želim da imam prostora da ih prikažem kao bolje, jer znam da Ketrin Roberts ume da napiše fantastičnu priču.

Întrecerea fusese ideea lui Reonet, dar Senu trebuia să participe. Şi trebuia să fie cel mai bun. Ceilalţi copii îl credeau prost. Trebuia să le arate că el şi Red erau în stare să facă şi alte lucruri, nu numai să le joace feste oamenilor.
— Termină, Red, îi zise el, plin de nervi, Ka-ului său, care mergea în mâini pe lângă potecă. Nu e de glumit!
Red, cam în silă, s-a ridicat în picioare, prefăcându-se că-şi scutură nisipul din părul roşcat şi cârlionţat, strâns în coadă într-o parte, o imitaţie imaterială a cozii lui Senu. Dar odată intraţi în încăperea din fundul piramidei, care părea un fagure imens, a redevenit serios. Reonet adusese o lampă. Ceilalţi copii se îngrămădiseră în jurul flăcării de culoarea ambrei. Deşi nimeni nu văzuse niciodată un ka, era evident, din şoaptele şi din discuţiile copiilor, că dublurile lor din cealaltă lume se aflau foarte aproape de ei.
Şi-au continuat drumul dificil de-a lungul tunelurilor şi au ajuns în camerele mai vechi, unde simţeai că te sufoci din cauza mirosului greu. Şoaptele şi chicotelile copiilor se potoliră treptat; Senu nu mai auzea acum decât respiraţia grea şi târşâitul picioarelor lor desculţe.
La un moment dat, Reonet a aşezat lampa într-o nişă şi a ridicat mâna.
— Aici, zise ea în şoaptă.
S-au îngrămădit toţi în criptă, curioşi să vadă corpul femeii moarte, numit de preoţi sahu. Era aşezat într-o firidă tăiată în piatră; trupul nu era bandajat, iar faţa foarte palidă părea chiar frumoasă. Nu mirosea prea tare, pentru că aerul deşertului îl uscase, iar organele fuseseră puse în borcane ferecate deasupra firidei. Pe cap avea o perucă din păr de capră, împletită cu mărgele colorate. În dreptul inimii, mâinile scheletice strângeau un lotus albastru, ofilit.

Katherine Roberts created an ancient and easy to understand universe of a incredibly secretive to us. This young adult novel focuses on adventure, friendship, family and finding one's purpose in life. Senu doesn't know what his future holds and this whole story begins because of his decision to enter in shady deal. That's the message that this story is making, you will find your place eventually one way or another.
I would recommend this to middle grade aged kids and teenagers alike, because it is short, fun and easy to understand and read.

i remember reading this book when i was about 8 or 9 years old and i also remember being so fascinated by it. i couldnt put it down and i absolutely loved it. the book was borrowed so at the time i didn't make it a point to write down the title as i was so sure i would remember it. well, i'm 21 now and it turns out i was wrong and i've been trying to search for the title of this book for years so i can't believe i finally found it on goodreads!!!

A great book, even more so because it`s set in Egypt, one of the most mysterious and exotic places on Earth. Breaking the rules to achieve justice and truth - well, of course I was excited when I read it over a decade ago.

An interesting series set in ancient world, with fantasy elements and a lot of adventure. However, the characters are not too well defined and the storyline is predictable; it was a fun read, but is suited more for childrens.

Some parts were a bit long and a bit confusing. Senu and his ka (kindof like a soul) have to work together and stop a pyramid robbery.
