I have to say that I am one of the later ones to the Firefly party but I am really enjoying catching up.

Although the TV series only ran for one series (which was followed by a film) the raft of material released - and is still being released is quite impressive.

So this book primarily focuses on the TV and film series but you cannot help but think that a lot of the material is also influenced by other publications too - although it was a well published fact that for the series a whole universe (sorry 'verse) was created providing a fully established bible for any storyline to follow.

I guess the only down side is that with books and comics (and a rumoured reboot) in all being planned this book will be superseded at some point - but I have to say that the wealth of information here means it will still be an incredible resource for many years to come

A new encyclopedic view of Firefly rounds out a big year for Firefly fans. First there was the release of two in-universe books, The Serenity Handbook followed by the Hidden Universe Travel Guide, then more recently we saw the first novel in the series, Big Damn Hero. Rounding out a year of great books for Browncoats is Firefly Encyclopedia, by Monica Valentinelli. Fans of past books for Firefly and the Firefly Loot Crate magazine will be familiar with the tone and design of this series overview. From the cover to the layout of Polaroid-inspired snips, the book is part scrapbook, part in-depth look into the story in an in-universe style, part behind the scenes photographic essay. You’re likely to find new images of the ship and crew, even if you’ve amassed all the previous Firefly books.

If this isn’t the biggest assemblage of ships, weapons, props, and sets, it comes close, plus the large photographs makes this the best designed look at the production so far. The concept artwork for several characters is something we haven’t seen before, and here many designs for each character are showcased. And at long last, fans have a Chinese-English translator tailored to the extensive use of the Chinese language in the series.

Part one of Firefly Encyclopedia presents the Firefly story, the complete in-world tale seen in the series, as you may find in an encyclopedia. Next is a look at the characters, each crew member–both in-universe and the actors behind the character, followed by a brief look at secondary characters. The next section is a geography of the ‘verse, comparative looks at planets, tables, astronomy, and ships along with an interview with artist Ben Mund. A table looks at the technobabble of the show, followed by a treatment of futuristic medicine in the series. A wider chapter looks at even more costume designs. A final chapter digs into the scripts for the series, including analysis and commentary.

Writer Monica Valentinelli previously created The Gorramn Shiniest Dictionary and Phrasebook in the ‘verse. Creator Joss Whedon, 20th Century Fox, and Titan Books, with the release of a few new books a year, plus the new comic book series beginning this year, have arrived at a place where Browncoats everywhere can continue to get their fix of the ‘verse throughout the year, still, 15 years since the series ended.

A comprehensive guide/summary of the Firefly universe, detailing the plot the world and the characters of the show, with mentions of the movie and comics, as well.

While it's quite extensive. I found reading through the plot of the show tedious, and didn't really care for details like how to day certain phrases in Mandarin.
I did find the description of the 'verse interesting, and liked some of the (pretty sparse) behind-the-scenes talk.

Overall, this is a book for a bigger Firefly geek than I am.

This encyclopedia provides background, history, definitions, and a synopsis of the Firefly/Serenity franchise. As an encyclopedia, it should also address the RPG games, comics, novels, and graphic novels to be thorough. It hints at a few of these storylines but mainly focuses on the television series and film. I would have liked it to go deeper into the canon outside of those as well.

Very pretty book. I liked looking at all the pictures. But, as an encyclopedia, it doesn't seem all that well organized.
