لأن التطوُّر حقيقة، فهو لم يَعُد أمر قابل للنقاش. في هذا العمل التنويري من العِلم المُبسَّط، يوضح لنا عالم الأنثروبولوجيا كاميرون م. سميث بأن التطوُّر لا يحدث فحسب، بل هو واجب الحدوث. ُيبدَّد سميث فكرةْ (التي يتبناها العديد من المُصدَّقين العاديين بالتطوُّر) أن التطوُّر هو نوع من العمليات المبرمجة مسبقاً ذوات نتيجة حتمية. فالتطوُّر، وكما يناقش سميث، ليس آلة لتخريج المنتجات النهائية، بل هو النتيجة غير المقصودة لثلاث حقائق مستقلة للعالم الطبيعي: (١) أن أشكال الحياة تنتج الذُرِّية (التضاعف)؛ (٢) أن الذُرِّية غير متطابقة مع الأبوين (التمايز)؛ (٣) لا تتمكن كل الذُرِّية من البقاء على قيد الحياة (الانتقاء).

وأيضاً يُعْرِج هذا الكتاب على أهم الاكتشافات العِلمية الجديدة في التطوُّر، والتي حدث العديد منها على مدى العشرين عاماً الماضية من "الثورة الجينوميَّة". وبالفعل فقد إجاد سميث في جعل هذه القضايا المعقدة سهلة المنال.
حقيقة التطوُّر، هو كتاب مُنظَّم للغاية، تَّثقيفي، وسهل القراءة، فضلاً عن كونه خيار مثالي لجميع الطلاب أو الباحثين أو لأيَّ شخص مهتم بتعلم التطوُّر.
كاميرون إم. سميث: عَالِم مُختصّ بِعُصُور ما قبل التاريخ، وأستاذ في قسم الأنثروبولوجيا في جامعة ولاية بورتلاند. كاتب للعِلوم الشعبية الُمبسَّطة، ومؤلف كتاب أشهر ١٠ خرافات حول التطوُّر (مع تشارلز سوليفان)، فضلاً عن العديد من الأعمال العِلمية، والمقالات المنشورة في الكثير من المجلات العِلمية المرموقة.

كتاب بسيط في الشىرح وغني بالمعلومات، يشرح لك جوهر نظرية التطور بطريقة جميلة وممتعة..
يمكن اعتباره المنطلق للغوص الى عالم البيولوجيا التطورية.

For the record there are better books about evolution. "The Greatest Show on Earth" by Richard Dawkins "Why Evolution Is True" by Jerry A. Coyne are superior but this one was able to make some concepts very clear to me, and a scientific revelation too.

The Fact of Evolution by Cameron M. Smith

" The Fact of Evolution " is a very instructive, accessible book about evolution. Backed by compelling scientific arguments, great illustrations and conveyed to reach the masses anthropologist Cameron M. Smith does a wonderful job of presenting the fact of evolution. This 346-page book is composed of the following nine chapters: 1. Nullis in Verba, 2. The Fact of Replication, 3. The Fact of Variation, 4. The Fact of Selection, 5. The Fact of Speciation, 6. The Fact of Evolution, 7. Evolution in Action, 8. The Mirror-House of Evolution, and 9. The Grand Illusion.

Positives:
1. A well written, accessible book about how evolution works.
2. A very well illustrated book. Many figures and tables to assist the reader.
3. Does a good job of defining scientific concepts.
4. Great easy to follow format.
5. A term that is embedded in my brain, "evolution is the consequence of three observable facts of replication, variation, and selection". Thank you.
6. DNA defined and illustrated.
7. The concepts of genotype and phenotype described exquisitely.
8. Sources and constraints of variation.
9. The best description of fitness I've read.
10. Very thorough chapter on how selection works and the many misconceptions about it.
11. The three most recognized modes of selection.
12. Speciation, well defined. Some interesting facts, "species is a stage in a process, not a static unit".
13. Modes of speciation.
14. A great section on observing speciation. The topic is worthy of a book.
15. Great facts, "The fact that the fossil and genetic evidence corroborate one another, even though they were developed centuries apart and for different reasons, is compelling support for a Darwinian explanation of the diversity of life today and in the past".
16. Does a great job of taking a pause and summarizing concepts before continuing on.
17. Evolution in action, many wonderful examples.
18. The eighth chapter, "The Mirror-House of Evolution" was my favorite chapter. It gave me several moments of enlightenment. Bravo!
19. The concept of Horizontal Gene Transfer (HGT) resonates with me, I finally get it and it just makes more sense to me. Thanks!
20. Ok any book that mentions the sonic hedgehog gene, goes down as a positive.
21. The use of the 2009 review from biologist Eugene V. Koonin really does a nice job of wrapping things up in this book.
22. A great notes section, bibliography, index and even websites for more on evolution. Much appreciated.

Negatives:
1. This book is as of this review is not available for the Kindle. Truth is, because of all the illustrations it may be better suited for printed format.
2. No mention of micro or macro evolution. Same process more time, I understand that but it would have been worthwhile.

In summary, at first I felt this book was like many books I've read about evolution. It felt like a good review, but as the foundation was being built I had my aha moments in chapter 8 and it made this book so worthwhile to read. It's one of the reasons I love reading so much, you never know when you are going to have one of those eureka moments. Evolution is a fascinating topic and Cameron M. Smith did it justice. A strong recommendation!

Smith provides an accessible account of evolution with an intriguing thesis that is inviting for the reader. Smith makes the case that evolution does not occur because it "wants" to happen; evolution must occur because it's a consequence of three observable facts that will be repeated throughout the book: Replication, variation, and selection.

I'll skip providing a summary of the book because Smith makes his case better than I could. The writing is simplistic. Smith refrains from a laborious writing style in favor of a calm, soothing tone that challenges the reader to carefully think about the presented argument. Scientific theories are sufficiently defined before Smith begins the discussion on evolution. Numerous examples are provided to supplement each claim. Helpful diagrams are given where a point would be best reinforced with an illustration. On the claim of redundancy made in other reiews, Smith made a point to repeat his thesis because that's what a good writer does, and because the audience for this book are neophytes (like myself) looking to cement their grounding in the basics of evolutionary theory. One of Smith's points about how evolution is misunderstood, is because of how the word theory is understood to be defined as an unsubstantiated guess. But this is not what a scientific theory is. It is an explanation of observable facts. This book aims to clarify statements that in Smith's words, "...fuels a fundamental understanding of evolution." Repetition is necessary to resolve these misunderstandings.

And I appreciate the structure of the book. It was neatly organized. Smith doesn't deviate from his thesis. He tells the reader exactly what he's going to argue, and after providing sufficient evidence for the point, moves on to the next in effortless fashion. It's like having the organization of a college lecture with an engaging professor that makes every attempt to educate his or her students. "The Fact of Evolution" is a useful and necessary book that dispels remaining misconceptions about evolution.

لا يضاهي كتاب دوكنز (أعظم استعراض فوق الأرض) في جمالية أسلوبه وجاذبية قصصه، لكنه مرتب جداً في عرض الأدلة على عكس كتاب دوكنز الذي لا يحتوي على أبواب وأقسام منظمة.
كتاب دوكنز يغمرك بالأدلة وأكثر تفصيلاً في الأمثلة التي تناولها وناقش أسئلة وإشكالات أكثر عمقاً.
يعتمد هنا الكاتب في إثبات حقيقة التطور على ثلاث أسس بسيطة متفق عليها: التضاعف، التمايز، الانتقاء.
برأيي أنه أهمل التفصيل في قسم من الأدلة كالأدلة الأحفورية.
بالمقابل أعجبني ذكره لمصدر كل معلومة ودراسة تضمنها.
الفصول الثلاثة الاخيرة للتأمل والاستزادة وليست لإقناع الرافض للنظرية.

هذا هو الكتاب الثاني الذي أقرأ حول نظرية التطور بعد مقدمة قصيرة جدا.
الكتاب منظم بشكل جيد، ونجح الكاتب في شرح آليات التطور، خاصة أنه كان يكررها باستمرار ويؤكد عليها في كل محاور الكتاب.
في الفصل الأول تم الحديث عن المنهج العلمي وعن نظرية التطور مبنية على هذا المنهج وبالتالي فهي الحقيقة الوحيدة التي تفسر التنوع الاحيائي.
في الفصل الثاني يتم التطرق لأحد آليات التطور والذي هو واضح وجلي لأنه يحدث باستمرار، وهو التضاعف. يقوم الكاتب بذكر معظم طرق التضاعف الجنسية واللاجنسية، ويشرح ذلك على مستوى الجينات والحمض النووي.
الفصل الثالث تم الحديث فيه عن الآلية الثانية للتطور وهي والتمايز، والمقصود بها هو اختلاف الذرية عن السلف. بعد البرهان على وجود والتمايز يتحدث عن أشكاله وخاصة التمايز الجيني والتمايز الظاهر سواء في الشكل او السلوك. ثم يمضي بعد ذلك في الحديث عن كيف يحدث التمايز على المستوى الجيني باعتبار ان التمايز الظاهر هو تمايز جيني في الأصل، وحجر الزاوية في كل هذا هو الطفرات.
الفصل الرابع يتم التطرق للآلية الثالثة للتطور وهي الانتقاء او الانتخاب. بعد نفس بعض الأخطاء الشائعة حول التطور وخاصة التكيف والبقاء للاقوى، يقوم الكاتب بشرح آلية الانتقاء بالارتكاز على مفهوم اللياقة والذي يعني القدرة على البقاء حيا ثم القدرة على التزاوج والانجاب ورعاية الذرية لاستمرار الجينات.
الفصل الخامس يعتبر أهم فص ليس فقط في الكتاب وإنما أيضا في نظرية التطور بل يمثل الهدف من النظرية، وهو التنوع والانتواع كما كتب المترجم. نظرية التطور تقول أن التضاعف مع التمايز والانتقاء يحدث التنوع. وقبل الحديث عن كيفية حدوث التنوع وأسبابه يبدأ الكاتب بالحديث عن تعريف النوع ثم يمضي في شرح الأسباب التي تؤدي إلى التنوع بالاعتماد على الآليات الثلاث، والسبب الأول والأهم هو العزلة التكاثرية.
بقية فصول الكتاب معظمها محاولة للبرهنة على التطور وخاصة التنوع ويتم إعطاء الكثير من الأمثلة.

بالنسبة لي الكاتب نجح بشكل كبير في شرح النظرية ولكنه فشل في إقناعي بحدوث الانتواع او التنوع. صحيح أن آليات التطور بديهية وتم البرهان عليها علميا لكن الانتواع يظل مجرد استنباط نظري والذي يمكن الجدال حول صحته.

لابد أن أذكر أنني قرأت النسخة المترجمة لهذا الكتاب، والواضح أن المؤلفة كانت متحمسة لطرح ما قد يفيد بأن يجعل حقيقة التطور واضحة لأبسط عقل بشري على قدر الإمكان. شرحت أن التطور لا يحمل مبدأ جديد ومنفصل تمامًا عن باقي الحقائق البيولوجية بل هو الذي يمكن أن يشرح ويكون الرابط بين كثير منها معتمدةً على ثلاث عمليات حيوية (1. التضاعف 2.التمايز 3. الانتقاء)، مشكّلة العامود الفقري لحقيقة التطور. حقيقة أن التضاعف هي العملية الأساسية لاستمرارية النوع والمخلوق حي، ناقلةً المعلومات الحيوية عبر ال DNA المشترك من الأبوين الأساسين -الذين بدورهم حملوا الـ DNA المشترك من أبويهم- خالقين كائن جديد من ذات النوع إنما بصفات متمايزه عن باقي الأفراد الآخرين، وإن لم يكن هذا التمايز ظاهر وواضح لعين الناظر إلا أنها مهمة ولو على بعد عقود من الزمن، فهي بذاتها عامل التغيّر والتطور في جينات الكائنات الحيّة التي إما عن طريق الإقصاء أو العوامل البيئية تنتقي الصفات الملائمة للكائن الحي.
لا يحمل الكتاب أي قيمة علمية غير إنها حاولت أن تبسّط العمليات الحيوية المتضمنه في مشروع التطور للكائنات الحية.

This is a really good book. It fleshed out a lot of what I already learned about evolution. It provided some very good & interesting examples. It added a simple perspective in regards to understanding what evolution is. It is the unintended consequence of replication, variation & selection. It is the establishing of those three very important facts that gives evolution it's solid foundation. Once one understands that, it demonstrates even more why it is not worth arguing against. Evolution is where the facts lead us. It's very informative & a good book read after one has learned the basics of what evolution is. This books is a great way to flesh out any previously acquired knowledge & understanding of the subject.

Evolution is not a thing; it is the consequence of these three observable facts. And because evolution is the logical consequence of these three facts, it is no longer debatable; it doesn’t just happen, it has to happen.
