A child of the slums, murderer's widow, and convicted prostitute, Mary Waterhouse rises from her sordid beginnings in London's underworld to become the wife of a liberal politician--with a shocking secret of his own--and carves out a successful career inBritish industry
In my top five all time favourite books. The cover makes it look like some sort of Barbara Taylor Bradford stuff, but it's far from that. Aftermath of 2nd world war in working class London, the gangster scene in 1950s ditto. Read it at least six times over the years
Read in 2018. Story of Mary Waterhouse of London from age 4 in 1941. She is sent off on a train filled with evacuees to escape the Germans. Follows her soap opera saga as she returns to the slums at the end of the war, has a baby at 16, marries 3x. Ends in 1996 with her memoirs.
This was really good. Easy to read. As for the "secret", I made up in my head what I thought it was, and I like my version better! But I am glad I read it, I like it.
Read this the first time while I was in high school and really liked it then. Re-reading though, it seems too packed with different plotlines. Almost like the author couldn't make up their mind about what would sell best, so they just tossed everything in. It still isn't horrible, but I'd no longer consider it a "great" book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The suspense of " what is the story behind the story" kept me going. I must say though when I finally found out what it was it seemed rather hokey. Still enjoyable reading.
No clue how I missed this one, but it started during the blitz! and took in the Keeler/Profumo scandal on the way. Great book for a day spent flat on one's back from a fall on the ice.
