Question
Have we reached saturation point so soon in the RH genre? Are there not enough ideas that new releases all seem to resemble another popular and successful RH series?

The last 2 books I've read which have had the biggest buzz in the RH genre have both been copy cat of already popular series?? Whats going on or is it just me?

If you've read this book then I'm sure which series I am referring to. Its pretty obvious in my opinion. Also very sneaky of Wills to have the author as her "senpai" which makes it OK to have a similar plot and characters and backstory - because the author knows about it and actively promotes this new version of the same story.
Its so similar I almost expected a photo of Callie to appear on the screen at the football match! and can match up the guys personalities with the same personalities of the other.

Now I am a fan of the other series. So after saying all of the above I did enjoy this new version too.

I will also note in bold that the warning in the blurb should be taken into consideration before starting. The abuse is very jarring and I almost stopped after the horrifying prologue. Not for YA without some parental approval beforehand - If you're a parent reading this just try the prologue if its okay with you then the rest will be too

Personally I didn't like the way the author handled the abuse. It was thrown in so casually in sentences that it almost made light of the situation Callie faced growing up. Par exemple
"Asshole, I bet I could show you a thing or two about the real world. I know what it feels like to have every bone in my foot smashed to the size of pebbles. Do you?"

Not everything was bad though. It was slow paced but I was in the mood for a teenage high school drama. The mix of different supernatural's in the harem was really great and some aspects of her PTSD were handled well and made it interesting, the "big secret" of her past was the main plot driver. With no romance I was surprised that was enough to keep me turning pages actually!

I'll be looking out for the next. This was the debut novel of Wills so maybe I'm being too harsh, it was a great start and very accomplished for her first work. Just not terribly original

Bound Spirit was an unexpected find that I was excited to read, but had no great expectations for. But WOW were my expectations blown away after reading this story. I fell in love with the characters and the story so quickly that I hope this author writes fast, because I NEED the next installment in this series!

Callie has finally escaped her abusive home-life and just wants to exist as a normal girl, as normal as she can be- and maybe make a few friends in her new town she moved to with her aunt. But for Callie this doesn't seem possible. Her first morning in her new house she wakes to an intruder in her room, and not just any intruder, but a guy about her age who was murdered a few months ago. Yep, he's a ghost. And his friends aren't just normal guys either. But neither is Callie, who is able to see Felix (the ghost).

After meeting and befriending these guys Callie quickly learns that she's not the only one out their with weird abilities. Her first new friend is a ghost, and the others range from a vampire, werewolf, and a dark and light nephilim. Learning that so many beings exist in this world is an adjustment for Callie, but she quickly accepts the guys and their help in discovering who she really is and what she can do.

Callie is a character who is overcoming a traumatic past, but still is able to open herself (however slowly or little) to the guys and let them in her life. She still has some triggers when it comes to certain objects or circumstances but her drive for a new life filled with friends and safety, and the support of her new friends, keeps her strong enough to move past her traumas. Callie is introduced to an entire world she had no idea about, and has some huge bombs dropped on her about her past, who she is, and what she'll be able to do. But despite this life changing information overload, she manages to deal and accept her new life, with the new people in it who truly care about her.

This book doesn't shy away from Callie's PTSD which I really liked. It keeps her very real and understandable. She has her issues, and some of the guys have some as well. They're not just basic 2-D characters but people with real problems and tragic pasts who still manage to live their lives, whether burying their issues or dealing with them.

The split POV in this story was great too. While mostly from Callie's perspective, the guys also had a few chapters in their POVs giving us a glimpse into their thoughts, pasts, and reactions to Callie. While this is definitely a slow burn reverse harem (YA but I think later moving on to being NA) and Callie and the guys are at this point just friends, I can definitely see the harem building and the feelings start to grow in this group.

I really fell in love with this book and I'm so excited to see where H.A. Wills takes us in the next book and the rest of the series.

In my opinion, Bound Spirit's strength is the same as its weakness; it follows most RH tropes. Its been used and overused and does not add anything to the genre.
However, while originality is not what we will keep from this first installment, the author managed to avoid mistakes from previous publications; the heroine isn't boring, there are no plot holes, useless angst, instalove or filler.
It might be nothing new, but it's definitely entertaining and pleasing enough to make us read the next book.

For:
+ People that likes broken heroines
+ Reverse Harem amateurs
+ Not for the sensible souls

You should also like:

+ Born of Embers

Trigger warnings: Abuse, torture, PTSD

WARNING: I will be starting this review with some light spoilers and major spoilers to cap it. These spoilers may dip into the fourth book, as that is all I've read so far. The fifth book is sadly not out yet, to my very tortuous dismay. 🥺

Is it possible to marry a book...? lol [Totally kidding...am I?]

Okay, so maybe I know that I cannot really marry this book. I just REALLY REALLY LOVED IT is all. Marrying it just was the best thing I could really write to depict just how much I LOVED THIS SERIES. And its not even close to being over yet. There are 10 planned in total and were barely getting book 5 sometime this year. Which I am TOTALLY Psyched for after devouring this series in a span of 2 days. I mean I literally ate, slept, and read this series non stop. I just couldn't put it down.

This had to be the first series in a VERY long time that I feel almost attached to. I think the last series I really felt this way about is the Broken Bonds series by J. Bree. (BTW, if you haven't read that golden nugget series, then quickly finish reading this review and go read that series next!).

To be honest, the cover was a bit unassuming and the only reason I read it only a day after adding it to my TBR list, is because of two main factors. It was an RH series, and it had such an interesting blurb that I was sold. Aaaaannnd, because it was an RH. I mean, I am just a sucker for those babies.

So, I picked up this baby, loaded it up on my reader, and got cozy with a nice piping hot chocolate and leftover goodies from New Years. BOY WAS I BLOWN AWAY with absolutely ZERO TIME TO RECOVER.

I don't usually do summaries in my reviews unless there isn't much information in the blurb given to us by the author, but because some of you may be on the fence on reading this baby (even though I've already given so many brilliant reasons to pick it up), I'm gonna add one.

We have Callie who is beaten to the point of death, multiple times, by someone she should trust. It leads her to Oregon where she meets the guys, that she has no idea, will become her closest confidants. Donovan, Nolan, Felix, Kaleb, and Conner. (Breathe, don't squeal....lol). I will let you figure out the rest from reading the book.

Here's the breakdown though of WHY this series is so great! This will have more about the book that may convince you to read it, but I will warn you that from here on out, the spoilers will be heavier! Onwards!

So let's start with Callie, our dear FMC. She was an EXCELLENT Main Character. She was smart, very not whiny or bland, she had so much heart for someone who went through what she did, and she was just present with everything that was thrown at her. She understood the guys and was thoughtful towards their problems and their feelings. She didn't sugarcoat things to make herself feel better, and boy was she sassy.

See, lately I've been seeing a lot of books coming out with these "BADASS" characters who claim to be sooo "Sassy" and "Independent Woman who can handle anything" kind of people. Which doesn't bother me as a whole, but it can be annoying when it's actually executed. Why? Well, because they usually don't live up to their proclaimed characteristics.

In this series, the FMC doesn't claim to be anything. She just lives every day and just is herself. We as the readers see her character through all of her interactions, reactions, and straight up snark. Yes, she shows how much she can handle herself, but I liked that she knew when to let the boys hold her up too. That she didn't push away their affections or their worries for her. She allowed herself to be vulnerable, which is such a great thing because as some say, there is great strength in vulnerability sometimes. She especially was great at being humble and reflecting instead of just jumping to conclusions and doing dumb stuff for the shock value, like so many other FMC characters do. She actually had reasons and thought things through.

"I don't know how to handle my own shit, so I'm completely ill-equipped to help him with his. It feels like weights drag at my limbs, as I question whether I'm worthy to be friends with the guys, They know how to be there for each other. How to comfort each other. I don't know how to do any of these things."

This quote was one of my favorites because it really showed how deeply (even in just the first book) she thought about others and her effect on the new friends she was making. There was some subtlety to her thoughts here as she ponders how she can be a good asset even though she had a less than forgiving upbringing.

Yet, in the next few lines after, she rolls with Donovan's jokes and laughs along with him. Allowing the thoughts to lightly prompt the reader, but not drown them in inner monologues of how inadequate she feels or woe is me B.S.

It was REFRESHING to actually read something that hinted at feelings, but didn't squash the reader under pages and pages of inner self-doubt. Not that those are bad per se, but it's been so over done and sometimes it's just nauseating.

Reason two for adoring this book, was the HUMOR. Yes, I said it folks, I love books that have good humor! Life is messy and life in books are messy, but not everything has to be droll. To bring pages to life I think that there needs to be some kind of laughter, snark, playful moments and sassy-ness.

All the characters worked so well together and had these elements rolling from book 1 to book 4. I was laughing constantly in between the somber tints and morose highlights scattered within the scenes. The guys were a hoot to be around and Callie fit in perfectly. Here are some fine examples of this humor I speak of:
_________________________________________________________
"It's because of the uniforms are so ugly, isn't it. You're ashamed to be impersonating a giant tomato."

"No, No," Nolan interjects with a sly smirk, "he's thinking of how many accidents he'll cause when people mistake him for an enormous stop sign."
_________________________________________________________

"Is there like a spell version of Ctrl?"
_________________________________________________________

Basically, I just loved some of the interlaced humor that was subtle and just had that oomph that I haven't seen in a while. I can't even say they were one-liners or anything like that, but just pure-hearted FUN!

I also liked the fact that they did really add the mundane slices of life within the mix of truly unique scenes. I mean, yes, I love reading the awesome scenes that I haven't really seen before. I mean, sometimes a lot of authors tend to reduce. reuse. And recycle. other books, but I have to say I loved the books in this series for creating scenes that felt different and authentic. Also, the fact that the teens actually studied, had families, and went to actual school. You wouldn't believe how many high school RH romances I've read that the teens suddenly have no parents and are just traipsing all around town with no care about studying or homework. Its unrealistic. In this series, the FMC even notices the water stains and gum on the school ceiling! She constantly relies on her aunt with that respectful authority regard. Not to mention, they all do normal things outside of being supernatural beings. Like school, volunteerwork, nerdy/ geeky moments, and holidays with family.

Finally, I'm going to talk about the relationship. This relationship felt so natural that I really felt each one of these characters' connection to the FMC. They were all different in their personalities and their vibe with her, but it worked. I didn't feel as if anything was forced or too chaotic. In fact, there was lighthearted fun in every line and in between all the heaviness of the blows that were thrown at them.

This book also didn't focus solely on the relationships. There was a superb blend of outside interactions, plot, and romantic elements. The guys and Callie were also pretty direct and straightforward with each other, when they weren't trying to hide things from each other. It was invigorating. I ate it up!

"Your shit is our shit... We stick together."

So, lastly, I loved this series. It was just so good that I am practically in pain at knowing I may have to wait months for book 5. However, it's sooooo worth it. I loved the guys and the story just that much. It'll be a delight to reconnect with the characters when the next book does come out.

Well, Happy New Years Y'all! I hope everyone has a prosperous 2024 and what a way to start the year. Now, what should I read next....?

Some songs that made me vibe with the book:

- Elastic Hear by Sia (made me think of Callie)
- Bad habits by Ed Sheeran (definitely Nolan vibes, especially book 3 & 4)
- Heat Waves by Glass Animals (all of 'em especially Donovan and Connor).
- Loser by Julian Moon (maybe slight Kaleb, Felix, and Callie Vibes)

Read other books by this author in the future: yes
MC: Callie, Felix, Kaleb, Nolan, Donovan, Connor
SC: Mildred, The Bastard, the bitches (ups, witches )

At the beginning of the book we meet Calli and Mildred. Mildred is Callis aunt and took Calli in when her Dad was sentenced to five year in jail. In the small town they rented a house. And when Calli goes to her bedroom she meets Felix, who is a ghost. Felix is happy that somebody can see and talk to him. Calli will attend the local high school so Felix tells her to meet his friend on her first day of school.
She agrees and meets Felix, Kaleb, Nolan, Donovan and Connor at her new school. Felix tells the guy that Calli might be nephilim, because she can see ghosts. But Calli doesn’t know nephilim and Donovan gives her a crash course in supernaturals showing her his real form and telling her, that she is not nephilim. Connor thinks she is a witch. The guys take her to most of her classes and lunch and decide to adopt her into their group. They really like Calli.

In this book the group tries to find out what supernatural Calli is. And on the way they become friends.

It is a young adult rh fantasy book and I would not really recommend it to people who are not into ya books, because even though Calli had a tough life she is very sweet and innocent. And as you already guessed I really loved this book. I like all the main characters and also Callis aunt Mildred. The book was nicely paced, entertaining and keept my attention very well.

This feels familiar

Okay this is a good book, like it’s written well and he story is somewhat interesting, but this seems like an almost exact replica of the Veil Diaries series. I’m not insinuating that the author plagiarized or anything, but it does feel a bit redundant as a reader to read two different series about a girl with very serious emotional trauma who moves in with a distant relative and meets up with a group of boys who are somewhat obsessed with her and are popular in her small town high school. I’ll definitely be reading the next one, if only because it’s free, but for now I wasn’t that impressed with the book just because it felt like a re-read from a completely different author.

Just my cup of tea...

Callie, our FMC, has recently moved to Oregon with her aunt Mildred after suffering years of abuse from her father who is currently in prison for attempted kidnapping of a woman. The day she moves into her new home, she has a surprisingly easy and comfortable interaction with a ghost and first day of school, Callie's very first conversation involves leaking magic, nephilim, demon hunting and apparently, she's a witch now. Introverted and socially awkward? Pfft. Try being a witch with leaking magic who has never had any healthy relationship with anyone and doesn't know shit about
anything.

This is my absolute favourite trope in reverse harem. The innocent and abused girl with not one but 4+ hot, dangerous and capable men to protect her? Lemme just go scream my brains out and come back. I've read countless RH academy books with the same trope where a intimidating group of men take the girl with shadows in her eyes under their wing and protect her but I don't think I'll ever get tired of the trope.

This particular book also had a kind of unique brand of humour. I didn't catch any eerily similar innuendos or anything and I enjoyed this. It was written in a kinda traditional RH way with some extra fun substance (if that makes sense?).

Callie is a damn stong lead. She may not be a skilled fighter but her mental toughness makes her a badass in a very unique kinda way. In some books, abused heroines try to move on by forgetting their trauma. They try their best to not think about it and focus on the future until the one day they have to face their past and with the help of the men she loves, she is able to make peace or resolve whatever problem there is but that was so not the case here. Here, Callie actively tries to overcome her problems. Instead of shying away, she faces her demons head on and is determined to vanquish them, how much ever time it takes and however scarred she is at the end. She does not need the men for her help. She can deal with her problems on her own but their support is greatly appreciated by her. She doesn't need them, she wants them. Callie gets triggered by stairs. Instead of asking someone where the elevator is, she tries to get over her fear of them by using them. She is scared, but she takes deep breaths, grips the banister and tries to descend or ascend as smoothly as she can. She tries to not show her fear of them. She doesn't let fear stop her from doing things she wants and I love her for that. We've got one tough cookie here.

The guys are Felix, Kaleb, Nolan, Donovan and Connor. Nolan's nature gets revealed a bit later than the others but I don't think it's a very big spoiler or anything. Thing is, here are who the guys are:
Felix : Geeky Ghost
Kaleb : The 'perfect' Light nephilim
Nolan : the playboy Vampire
Donovan : the blunt dark nephilim
Connor : the silent wolf shifter

Good book. Funny. Good pace. Well-written. Nice concept. Good plot. Not-so-good cover. Nice development of relationships a.k.a no insta-lust nor insta-love. I'll definitely recommend it to fans of the RH genre.

I initially thought this was a trilogy but damn..... A ten book series? Sheesh, let's hope it doesn't get boring halfway through. Thought I could binge the whole thing but alas! Too late to back out now though. Off to book two! If the author tries to repeat the same jokes or things again though, we're gonna have a problem pretty soon. Using the word 'renegade' seemed cool at first but we use them four more times? Not so cool. Too many notes to self? Not so cool, even if I enjoy them now. Anyway, let's hope for the best! 🤞

Glad I stumbled on this series!

4 Stars!

I am so glad I stumbled on this books and series. I will admit that I was initially drawn in by the promise of a YA reverse harem, because really those two things should not go together. However, this book is pretty tame and clean.

Callie is a dichotomy. She is strong and yet afraid at the same time. She is trying to make her way in a new situation. She meets five boys who quickly become her closest friends and protectors.

I love that the author takes the time to fully introduce the reader to Callie’s world and later on the guys. The book does not rush, but it doesn’t meander along aimlessly either. The situation is introduced and slowly built upon.

The main characters are all endearing. Secondary characters add plenty to the plot. The town itself and its surroundings are almost present as characters.

A great YA PNR!

Father abuses heroine.
Father goes to jail. Heroine moves in with aunt.
Heroine moves into a new home with aunt and meets a ghost which happens to be one of the heroes in the story.

The writing was mediocre.
The premise was good, but poor execution.

The slow burn romance did not bother me, but the writing style did. I was unable to connect. The story did not flow.

I really tried with this one because I was desperate for a good reverse harem and this one was highly rated. Unfortunately, I've reached 50% in this book and... nothing has happened. Like our main heroine did some studying, some shopping, and hung out with her potential love interests. And that was over two pages of NOTHING.

The book had a shocking start, but one that is bound to get your attention - it definitely got mine. All I could think of was "If this is just the prologue, then what the hell is going to happen in the main story".
And it was good. I do not want to go into details, because you should totally go into the story unaware of what you'll be facing, but just know that it's a good one. There were times when it was slightly bordering on cheesy and dramatic, but the author always managed to pull you back just in time and throw a heavy dose of "real feelings" on you.
And even though we got to know the characters pretty well here, I still have a lot of questions and guesses left and I cannot wait to explore it all in the next book.

Now, let's be real for a minute, okey? January 2019 is way too long a time to make us readers wait! Just put us out of our misery and release the second book sonner. Pretty please?

I get why everyone loves this! I feel terrible for admitting it now, having read it, but I totally avoided this for so long because I thought the ghost element would be bad. It's not!

Key Points:
- Ghost, wold shifter, vampire, light nephilim, dark nephilim, witches
- Main character was literally tortured to the point of death for years by her father as sort of sadistic experiments
- Quiet but spunky MC
- 5 guys
- Similar to Veil Diaries (and a bit to Ghost Bird: The Academy Omnibus Part 1: Books One - Four series)
- High school
- The guys befriend her waaaay before anything sexy happens (nothing but friendship and little overprotectiveness in this first book)
- The supernatural element is integrated really nicely. Not jarring
- The guys are pretty stereotypical (I happen to like that! But some won't like the traditional leader jock, jovial nerd, secretly sweet tough guy, quiet serious guy, and preppy player guy labels)
- Series is NOT complete (estimated 10 books. Currently 3 published)
- Mulitple POV

Loved it!

Callie has the chance to start a new life, but it's hard to move forward when the nightmares of your past haunt you. A new town and a new high school. Five unique guys, each doing the best they can to deal with their own pasts and/or futures. Learning there is much more to reality than most people know. This was an engaging and fun read that I could not put down, and those who like The Veil Diaries series will quickly fall in love with this book by Wills. I eagerly await her next novel in The Bound Spirit Series!

Requires very little mental bandwidth, like going to a concert by your favorite cover band (if you enjoyed the Veil Diaries and inside baseball “humor” about YA vamp novels.)

Also, verra verra predictable.

We spend most of our time inside character’s head and there is ZERO action, unless you count a panic attack as action. So strap in, folks...I think we are in for a 25 book series before they go to pound town.

Too much “telling” rather than “showing” and it seemed like the author tried to shove as many pop culture references as she could into this. The over abundance of references didn’t even feel necessary to the story, felt more like filler or the author wanting to showcase her knowledge/views about it.

4.5-5 Stars,

Wow, okay this book came out of nowhere. I was starting and stopping at least 3-4 other high school/fantasy/RH romance books and this one just stuck.

This book had all the right things that I love in a story: action, a made family of close friends, romance(ish....well not in this book but I can feel it coming soon), a strong heroine that takes no craps and has gone through her fair share of things.

Why is it so hard to write reviews on books that are amazing. I did go in to this book pretty blind, I briefly read the synopsis, but it was more of a light skim. I think it was good I didn't know too much going in to this book, it made it that much more enjoyable.

Callie was put through the ringer growing up, but then one day her psycho dad decides to try and kidnap a woman, which he fails and puts him in jail, making Callie go in to her aunt Mildred's custody. There they move to Twin Cedar Pass (a small town in Oregon), where she is transferred in to TCP high school and meets a friendly ghost, Felix (love him), and his 4 friends: Kaleb, Donovan, Nolan and Connor. They are all supernatural in their own way, don't want to get in to what they are just in case.

The atmosphere of this book reminded me of Twilight, just being in the Pacific North West and Callie coming from Arizona, but that is where the similarities end. This book had a great group of guys that go out of their way to help ease her transition in to knowing about the supernatural world.

I loved each of the guys in their own way, the only one that I didn't get the most chemistry with Callie is Kaleb. I feel like all of the other guys had that something special with Callie, but Kaleb was more dissecting this as a psychologist would rather than a friend, which I get because that is how he is, but if this is RH I need to feel that romantic chemistry as well. Hopefully that changes in the next book.

Can't wait to read more on this series, this is definitely a SLOW BURN romance, they are still all friends in this book no romantic things happen which I think is why I enjoyed this book so much. The way the relationship is progressing reminds me of The Cardinal Bird, I enjoy getting to see the friendship that this group of misfits has, and then hopefully in the next book we see a natural progression to romantic feelings.

I loved the characters in this book and swore when I got to the end to find out I have to wait for the next book. The reason it got a four stars instead of five was because in some places the story moved a little slow for me and I couldn't decide between 3.5 and 4 stars, but the story is intriguing enough and left me wanting more, it nudged it up to 4.

Guys. Guys. I don't give one-star reviews very often. Usually, I can find something redeeming in a story to give it at least two stars. But....GUYS. I'm getting annoyed just thinking about what I want to write in this review. I recently signed up for Kindle Unlimited because they had a deal where you get 3 months for .99 cents a month. I started watching a few Youtube videos that focus solely on Kindle Unlimited recommendations and found this one. I love paranormal anything. If it has a werewolf, a vampire, or a witch. I'm sold. I'll read it. Unfortunately, werewolves, vampires, witches, nephilim, and ghosts couldn't save this book for me.

When I started the novel, I expected to love it. I do want to highlight that point. I definitely went into this with an open mind. The book embraced itself if that makes any sense. It knew what it set out to do. Unfortunately, it went downhill rather quickly for me after the first few chapters. As soon as our main character, Callie, set foot at her new school, the girl hate began and so did the 'I'm not like every other girl' trope. Which are two of my least favorite things to read about. As soon as Callie walks up to this new paranormal group of boys (who every girl at the school apparently lusts after), every girl around glares at her. Fine, maybe it happened that one time. I can look past that. But no. Every single time Callie is at school, or at a party, or around any girls at all, they're glaring at her or shooting her dirty looks. There's not one girl at this school who doesn't see her as a threat? I doubt it.

This is going to come across as petty, and I totally accept that. But wow. Every description of what these characters are wearing in the first 75% of the book contains the word 'Henley' and there are lots of descriptions of what these characters are wearing throughout. I didn't know what a Henley was when I first started reading. Now I do. Maybe they are always wearing Henleys but is there no other way to describe that type of shirt?  Also, Kaleb one of the love interests and also the "brainiac" of the group curses in Latin or just randomly speaks in Latin phrases. It was obnoxious and every time I read it, I could not help but roll my eyes.

Now that I'm finished with that rant, I'll wrap this up. This is a great idea. The author has a fantastic story here, in my opinion. Unfortunately, the execution completely missed the mark for me. I can't go into the 'not like other girls' trope because I don't want to get into spoilers but if you do pick this up, or if you have read this one, you'll see/know what I mean. This is categorized as reverse-harem romance and I like the idea because I think if done correctly, it can be more of an empowerment story rather than something that falls into a girl-hate trope like this one did. If you have any paranormal romance books that you do recommend, please let me know! I haven't enjoyed the last few that I've picked up and I'm bummed out about it.

2nd reread 4 stars. I found I enjoyed this more this time around. I feel the shock of Callie's abuse on my first read dropped my rating some. This time I knew what to expect and was able to enjoy the story without being sucker punched in the face.

3 1/2 stars.
This book is similar to the veil diaries. It wasn't terrible so I will continue on to the 2nd book. There were a few things that stuck out, like the abuse to Callie. It was very disturbing at one point and I had tears running down my face. Be forewarned it's not for the weak of heart. I feel the author down played Callie's abuse as well. If she was going to throw her right into a group of guys that are bigger then life she should have not made her abuse so horrifying. No one girl or guy would live through that and be okay with any interaction with another especially so soon. Yes, it's a book but it made it unrealistic.
Also, what was with the Latin? The boys kept throwing it around and kindle for some reason doesn't translate Latin. I had to keep looking it up because yes, I needed to know what the hell was said.
I liked the guys and Aunt Mildred though and hope the story progresses into more of a plot besides what has happened. On to the next!

A solid read! I enjoyed this book, even if not an instant favorite. Totally a me thing, but I think I’m over the whole “FMC getting abused half to death and having trauma and meeting guys who help fix her “ kind of thing.

Callie was a good character, if not a little more extroverted than I would have expected. After how badly she was abused, I didn’t think she would’ve just so easily accepted the guys friendships like she did. Still, the set up was interesting, if not super quick.

The guys were great, especially the ghost (i cannot for the life of me remember his name, Zach?) and Connor, the Wolf shifter. I like that they both seem instantly connected to her, while the others are friendly. (I’m at weird phase right now where I don’t like reading about the guys in the harem near other girls like that, even if not fully sexually lol 😭)

I’m glad some of the mystery of what she is got announced, and with the guys around so they know too. It is a slow burn, and there will be 10 books out I guess, so it’s interesting to try and imagine where this is all going. There is also some MM.

4.5

I felt echoes of The Veil Chronicles here, but in a good way. That said, it stands on its own - and stands apart by being a completely supernatural tale. Can’t wait to read book 2!

Since GoodReads took way the notes capability on their app. I'm having to use my reviews as a way to help myself remember the story line when the next book comes out.

Callie has suffered torturous experiences at the hands of her father for years. After her father gets arrested and thrown in prison for an attempted kidnapping, her maternal aunt takes over guardianship and they move from Arizona to a sleepy town in Oregon. Their little house is haunted by a teenage ghost named Felix who is surprised that Callie can see him. He tells her that he will introduce her to his friends the next day at school. They meet up in front of the school and not so subtly state Callie is a witch and pretty much the friends are supernatural as well. Kaleb is a light nephlium, Donovan is a dark nephilum, Conner is a wolf shifter, Nolan is a vampire, and Felix is a ghost who was a human friend that was murder along with his family 4mons earlier. Throughout the book, Callie suffers from flashbacks of abuses by her father along with moments of elemental power of a high degree. After a strong reaction to campfire, Callie goes into a catatonic state that scares the fellas and they take her back to her aunt who Conner figured out is a witch. The friends called her aunt, Mildred, out about letting Callie learn about her magic blindly but she had reasons to want to ease Callie into slowly learning about her witchy side what with her traumatic past and all. Felix had to end Callie's "dream" to pull her out and he witness one of the memoriea of her father burning her alive. Felix is deeply affected by the scene and opens up to Callie to pull her out of her dream. Callie explains her torturous past to the guys but leaves out the gory details that Felix was exposed to. The guys notice Felix being less than bubbly after the episode. Mildred decides to drop a bomb of knowledge on Callie and the guys. Turns out Callie is a spirit witch which is rare and her POS father was abusing her to break the bind on her magic. The witch counsel along with the wolf shifters, who were bodyguards, betrayed the Spirit witches who were meant to lead the witches. Mildred is suspicious that the counsel was killing off the spirit witch lines because they didn't want to give up control.

Overall, enjoying this slow burn series because the storyline is intriguing.

Bound Spirit begins with the heroine finally getting out of her hellish life, and starting a new school in a new town. Now, she ends up meeting some new friends, but they may be a little bit different than she is used to, well sort of. Anyway, as the story goes on the heroine learns more about herself, and her past, while also trying to keep it hidden.

This book was a great start to this series, I'm just hoping the men don't do that whole, "She can't be with all of us," drama, because that gets old fast.
Other than that, I really enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to more in this series.

All the feels

This book will take you on an emotional rollercoaster and you won't ever want to get off. I got some B.L. Brunnemer vibes from this story as the writing and the way the author makes you care for all the characters is very similar, and you've got a somewhat similar story with a high school girl who suffered abuse from a parent joins in with a group of guys that make her feel safe and cared for for the first time, but this makes sense since apparently Brunnemer is a mentor to this author. There are some minor errors in the writing, but not enough to distract or detract from the story. If you're a fan of YA paranormal RH with characters that tug at your heartstrings and a story you don't want to end, I'd recommend this book for you.

Hardship +Friendship +Magic with a touch of Supernatural= Awesome!

I love this book because it is so easy to enter Callie’s world and follow her hard beginnings to where she finds the best friends she could ever have, even though they are all guys who are also supernatural beings. As you read, you’ll find yourself lost in each character and their unique thoughts and challenges in learning about themselves and their special friendship. It was very refreshing to read new ideas about the usual creatures like Vampires, Shifters, Ghosts and Witches, not to mention Magic itself. I am eager for the next book so I can find out more about Callie’s special magic and the next adventures for her and the guys.

An enjoyable slow burn fantasy reverse harem with likeable characters and a storyline that progresses well. Though there isn't too much drama in this book, the heartbreaking abuse at her father's hand may be a trigger for some. This series is a hidden gem that I will definitely be continuing to follow
