When I was younger, most books showcasing a parent and a child focused on the mother figure. So I’m always pleased when I find modern picture books breaking the mold and emphasizing the importance of the relationship a child has with their father. The main theme of this book is that a father’s love is always there in many forms. Using rhyming poetry and metaphors, each page shares a different color and animal focusing on the father caring for their young. The back matter provides more informatio ...more

What a clever idea to write a book about the animal species that rely on the father to do all the
nurturing and give momma a break. Back matter describing the nine animals and birds and amphibians where the father plays an active role in raising the babies.

Shh…don’t tell my husband! This is what he’s getting for Father's Day this year. More “serious” than the other books I’ve gotten him, this gem from Hannah Holt features rhyming text that beautifully gives glimpses into the real-life care different animal daddies give to their babies. The book does triple duty teaching color concepts, figurative language (think similes), and facts about animal dads (there is some extra info in the back matter). Plus, the illustrations are just so sweet and beauti ...more

This picture book showcases different species in which the fathers care for their children.

"Papas come in many stripes -- The big. The bold. The silent types. Beneath the ground or high above, each father's heart comes filled with love."

Anthropomorphized animals from across the world depict a father's love. Male emperor penguins, red foxes, pygmy marmosets, lions, midwife toads, seahorses, peregrines falcons, gray wolves, and emus are shown lovingly caring for their offspring. Human dads holding

From the very first page, this book captures the warm feelings of tender fatherly love, as depicted in the animal world. Young readers will like learning about how animals dads from each continent care for their young. As an added bonus, each page also evokes a different color associated with the animal.
One of my favorite pages reads:
Nestled on a purple ledge,
these baby falcons flap and fledge.
Their momma hunts. Dad keeps them warm.
This father's love soothes any storm.
The lyrical text flows nice

What a beautiful tribute to fathers - and in rhyme that is lyrical yet simple enough for little ones to enjoy. The perfect gift for Father's Day or Valentine's Day or when a new baby arrives.
I love the nonfiction element of the story - various father/child relationships are portrayed, both human and those in the animal kingdom - with information in the back matter about the different animals mentioned.

A Father's Love tells miniature stories in rhyme about the way various animal fathers lovingly interact with their little ones--from penguins to foxes to seahorses. The charming, calming book for bedtime or anytime culminates with human father love that invites Daddy-child snuggle time. With its rich illustrations and color palette, young readers will be drawn into the lives of well-known and lesser-known animals, this book will surely evoke that test of a good picture book: "Read it again!" ...more

We bought this as a Father’s Day gift after loving Hannah Holt’s The Diamond and Boy. It is a delight— lovely for Father’s Day and baby showers. With charming verse it shows real father-child animal relationships around the world. There are geography (maps!) and color layers as well as animal facts in the back. The delightful illustrations are a great. This book will be read many times. Highly recommended as a great Daddy-child gift!

"But what about the moms? Where are the moms?" Likely biased because I'm the bigger reader in our family, my kindergartener wondered where the mothers were - but still liked this story, which weaves a rainbow of colors highlighting different animal dads and their young ones. While not necessarily the most accurate (as male lions are also known to kill their offspring...), this book celebrates fatherhood. ...more

A good addition to pictures books.

What I liked:
It shows a father's love rather than the usual mom's love portrayed in picture books.
The uncluttered artwork and nature focus.
And, I learned some things about what some male creatures do for their young. I only knew about penguins.
Nice recap at the end which each animal and what the father's role is.

This lyrical book highlights fathers throughout the animal kingdom who care for their young. Young readers will enjoy learning about daddy seahorses, emus, marmosets, and more. The included back matter gives additional information about the role of each animal father. The adorable illustrations paired with the flowing text make this a perfect choice for a read aloud.
