It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be

This short and inspiring biography of JK Rowling, the writer who made kids fall in love with reading again, is well-researched and beautifully illustrated in an original paper-cut style. It gave me a much better idea of the writer’s background, tenacity, determination and love of writing. I didn’t know about her mother’s MS illness and the profound effect it must have had on her family. I loved her words on the importance of failure wh

I was thrilled to receive an advanced copy of J.K. Rowling by Caroline Moss today. Thank you to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Childrens for the opportunity to read and review this book.

J.K. Rowling is part of a new series called, "Work It, Girl", which highlights influential and trailblazing women. I had the extreme pleasure to read this edition and I cannot say enough good things about it. This would be a perfect book for any young reader (fan of Harry Potter or not).

"Work it, girl" is a new series of empowering biographies featuring modern women.
These biographies are short yet detailed: that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures.
This one is about J.K. Rowling, one of most influential women in the literary (and not only) world.

I wanted to feel a bit of inspiration and hope so I decided to pick this book up at the bookstore.
It gave me what I needed. Rowling is indeed such an inspiring individual and I will forever appreciate her for her endurance and for giving us Harry Potter.
Also, let me tell you, Sinem Erkas' illustrations were mesmerizing!

I enjoy short biographies like this which, although they can be read in around half an hour, provide a lot of food for thought. Here, there is a great deal of inspiring material, and the focus and determination which J.K. Rowling had when working on her infamous Harry Potter series are at the forefront. I wasn't overly enamoured with Moss' writing, as it sometimes felt a little loose, and there are a few colloquialisms which have been used, I felt, unnecessarily. However, the papercut-style illu ...more

While there are parts of this book that I really enjoyed, I found definite problems in other areas.

Rather than simply being a biography, the book aims to be inspirational... and it's in this area that it's at its weakest. There are confusing mixed messages, such as "failure is good"... while simultaneously telling kids to work hard so they won't fail. (This made me wonder if we would've even had Harry Potter if Rowling had gotten into Oxford when she was a young adult. Her life might have gone i

Good and charming little biography of J. K. Rowling. Marvellously illustrated with colorful witch like colors. Tons of information and some quotes as well. Well done and a good way to learn about an author that definitely let her mark in the literacy world!

I love how women's histories are being made available to young readers. When I was in sixth grade I ate through the biography section of our small school library. (It was two book cases, and I must have read nearly every one of those books. It is so inspiring to find out where people came from.

This book is marvelous. Short chapters. Large pictures, interspersed with things that happened to her in her life.

A delightful look at JK Rowlings life. Very easy, and a delight to read.

Thank you netgalley for the e-arc! E-arc provided for an honest review.

This was such a fun read even though i already knew a bit about Rowling's life and childhood. The illustrations were absolutely beautiful and loved the quote pages! I even screenshotted a few in my ipad so i can use them as backgrounds :) As it was mainly factual, it was more like informative, not so much of gripping etc. However, it was still an inspiring read and her story gave me so much more will and motivation :)

I really love the idea and purpose behind the book J. K. Rowling by Caroline Moss and illustrated by Sinam Erkas. It's an illustrated biography detailing pieces of J. K. Rowling's life and her journey toward becoming a published author and one of the most influential people in the world. Her words have reached billions and her story is deeply loved by a great many people. And Rowling began her journey much like many others had, as a young person with a love of books and a love for writing. Achie ...more

Recommends it for: Everyone
A short biography of J.K. Rowling's life in around 50 pages. With illustrations that were eye-catching and beautiful. It seemed less of a way to "Boss the Bestsellers List" than a good guide to life. Either way, I liked it overall, I did have some doubts about a few of the statements though. For instance, I know J.K. tried hard in primer school because she had a teacher with a seating system which meant that when J.K. got moved to the top of the class her friend got moved to the dummy chair. I’ve always been a huge fan of J.K. Rowling. I have fond memories of reading the first Harry Potter books with my dad when they first came out.

Her life story is a huge inspiration to me, as a writer. I was familiar with a lot of her story, but I still found this book fascinating. Jo created her own success by working hard at what she enjoyed doing. She wrote when she had time, including while her daughter was napping. She continued to work hard even after she became successful. She also never fo

J.K. Rowling, author of the hit book series Harry Potter, is a household name around the world. From children to adults almost everyone has read the books or seen the movies. But how much do most readers really know about the author behind the title; the woman behind the author?

One of at least two books in a series of biographies about famous, modern women. Moss's writing is conversational, and she draws the reader right in to the early of life of Jo Rowling. Readers will feel a connection with Jo and her struggles, and finally her successes. Short chapters are interspersed with quotes by Jo, and the colorful paper collages by Sinem Erkas are outstanding; adding interest, color and depth to the story. End matter includes "10 Key Lesson from JK Rowling's Life" as well a ...more

I was sent a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This book should get the best biography for kids and best illustrations awards - it was a lovely experience and I have to admit I started reading it with a skeptic mind, but it proved me wrong and impressed me!

The writer manages to not only present us Jo's life but also inspire us and motivate us to pursue our dreams, never give up and learn from our failures! And did I mention how amazing the illustrations are?

I picked this book up because it looked cute and because it was about one of my favourite authors.

I loved the art, and I loved how sweetly and yet accurately J.K. Rowling's story was told in this book.

My favourite part was probably the way many of J.K. Rowling's quotes were spread throughout the book, mostly with a beautiful illustration to accompany it.

I loved the biography and I hope a lot of kids read it and draw inspiration from the real life wonder woman that is J.K. Rowling

Beautiful illustrations sit alongside simple yet powerful text, following Jo Rowling from a young girl to the billionaire author who is a household name. Aimed at younger authors, this text obviously skips over some aspects of Rowling's life, but still manages to reference her depression and ongoing struggle with mental health. A beautiful addition to any library or younger readers biography collection!

My 7-year-old read this to herself, and I read it too. Such a charming book, told in understandable language about a powerful woman role model. We especially loved the illustrations, which are paper collage and intricate. The writing was great, and we loved learning more about J.K. Rowling. My daughter said she likes that she was brave, never gave up and became a billionaire. :)

An excellent book telling the reader all about the writer - I loved the illustrations and found out so much about her early life that I had not known. The word-art quotes were meaningful too

I really enjoyed this book, I believe it's more oriented to teens than children. I loved how they told Joanne's story and felt very inspiring.
I love Harry Potter, so I wasn't unaware of Joanne struggles, but having this book and the ilustrationa made it a really nice tribute.
I was able to learn about her Charity's which was something I didn't know.
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to review this.

As a Potterhead, I couldn't resist this book. It's an interesting biography of J. K. Rowling, filled with quotes and vibrant illustrations. It also tells the story that one can achieve dreams if you're willing to do the work to get there.

The ‘Work It, Girl’ books are a wonderful series of biographies of women. From the same group that publishes the Little People Big Dreams series I reviewed a few days ago, these books are for a slightly older audience than the LPBD books.

Written as biographies of women for older elementary and middle-grade readers – these books show you how these women overcame obstacles, worked through (well, literal) walls! I enjoyed the reads too!

The artwork in these books is super-cool – paper-collages which
