Sal and Gabi’s Excellent Universe-Destroying Adventure

You know how I can tell when a book is great?

When I can’t even describe it to you without ruining the marvelous surprises. I mean . . . I could try to explain why Gabi’s father is called Lightning Dad, or why Sal’s teacher Dr. Doctorpants dresses like a gumball machine, or even why Sal’s physicist father and his not-quite-human assistant Bonita are building a remembranation machine in the living room. But you’d never believe me. You’d accuse

Sal Vidon is a magician. A young magician who has just lost his Mami, moved to a new school and is having a hard time fitting in.

Recently relocated to Miami, Sal quickly finds himself on the wrong side of the school bully, Yasmany.

To escape this run-in, Sal performs his trickiest of tricks yet. He makes a raw chicken appear in the bully's locker! Take that!

Unfortunately, such antics have the opposite effect he is looking for when accused of being a brujo, the other kids at school become afrai

I LOVED this book. So funny, clever, and moving with a hugely lovable cast of diverse characters.

I've read a few of the other Rick Riordan Presents books but I never finished them. They felt like diet Rick Riordan and like they didn't stand on their own all that well. This book I think dodged that problem effortlessly. It has science instead of magic and for the most part it felt like it was doing its own thing. Sal and Gabi are such a delight to read. I think that they are the most respectful and well mannered thirteen year olds I have ever read.

While I was reading it I kept wishing that I

Sal and Gabi are delightfully charming, but are, unfortunately, trapped in a lackluster plot.

THIS BOOOOOOK.

I just can not even with this book. It's one of my very favorite books I've read all year. Pretty much everyone I know will be getting this as a gift as soon as it comes out, kids and adults.

It was so incredibly delightful. I kept trying to savor it, to enjoy it and have it simmering in the back of my mind all day, but last night I hit the 3/4 mark and just stayed up late finishing it. I woke up my partner, laughing so hard that the bed shook. I also cried. I can NOT BELIEVE how ma

Imagine that you could go back in time to change anything you wanted. Now imagine that go into a different universe to change, swap, or bring people and things to your universe. Sounds crazy, right? Well, Sal is a special kind of kid who can "break" the universe to do all of those things. Sal is the new kid in town and in his first week of school he has been sent to the principal's office too many times to count. And to make things worse, he gets into a beef with the school bu

What a fun book!!! What can I say? The voice, the Spanglish, the characters, everything! It made me laugh so many times, and several times I'd look up from the page and have this glow in my heart. I'm so happy this book exists! Little me would have LOVED it!

Yes yes yes yes yes! This book made me laugh out loud and also brought me to the verge of tears. It's snarky and smart and honest, and I loved every minute of it. I adored the Cuban influence, and I loved that we got to see a diabetic protagonist (Sal's the only one I've encountered in children's lit outside of Stacy from the Babysitter's Club years and years ago, but type 1 diabetes affects a lot of kids!), and I loved the emphasis on Gabi and Sal's families, and I ADORED the fact that Sal tota ...more

Sal and Gabi Break the Universe is a fun middle grade book full of Cuban culture, magic, friendship and middle school! I enjoyed the writing and liked Sal and Gabi’s characters, but struggled at times with the busy storyline. I really liked the 400 page book but I’m not sure my eleven year old son would go for it. I will however be interested in the next book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Disney Book Group for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I loved this book so much! I think it is safe to say, even with it being the beginning of March, that this book is going to go down as one of my favorites of the year!

Sal and Gabi are both amazing characters. I felt a particular fondness for Sal, since I am a diabetic also. Even though Sal is a Type 1 Diabetic and I'm a Type 2, it was nice to see some diabetic representation in this book. Sal and Gabi are both amazing role models. We could all learn a little something from them.

One of my favor

I was super psyched to get an early read of yet another book from the new Rick Riordan Presents Imprint Series. This story is a little different than most of the mythology-based storylines that I’ve come to expect from this publisher. It’s Snark, Science, and Spanglish- that’s how I sold it to my own 13 yo kid.

I loved it so much that I talked him into reading my Kindle copy. I mean I was reading funny parts aloud at the table, in the car waiting for his brother, really everywhere cause once I s

This is a very character-centric book, and the characters are wonderful! It's hard not to fall in love with Sal, an exceptionally emotionally precocious child, despite the fact that he's still trying to recover from the loss of his mother when he was a young child. He's also a practiced magician, and his magic adds a playful element to the book. Then there's Gabi, who's precocious in an entirely different way--she could win any debate with her logical mind and incredible intelligence. The book e ...more

I am not the kind of audience this book was written for. It was written for middle-school students. I cleared middle school over ten years ago. So it isn't surprising that I could relate more to the author of the book than its characters. Culeco Academy is THE Dream school for all nerds out there (including me). It is a school that actually encourages creativity and where teachers are always supportive. It's a school where you get to put on a mask and jump around in class. It's a school where de ...more

This was such a fun book! Carlos Hernandez made such an excellent story, with a lot of depth, magic, and heart. I loved that the main characters were Cuban. Being a white girl, growing up in a predominately white society, I didn't get exposed to very many unique cultures. This showed all the beauty and fun and care that Cuban families have. It shared the culture in such an accessible way. I loved that. And the bilingual aspect! And how not every Cuban-American fits the stereotypes! The character ...more

Sal and Gabi is not just another great story. This story is a science fiction adventure with just the right voice that fans of Percy Jackson enjoy. Sal has struggled with his mom’s death for many years, bringing her back from an alternate universe without know how he does it. Sal loves magic, showmanship, and his new school. He uses his magic throughout his day at school sometimes with bad results that land him in the principal’s office. Ask Yasmany, the school bully, and Gabi about that. As Sal ...more

1.5 stars Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC! This book was odd. Every time I felt like I had a handle on it, some new twist or new quirk got thrown in. I did like Sal & Gabi. They were clever and silly. However, I just didn’t really understand the purpose of the book or the story. I guess it taught a lesson. I guess it was humorous. I guess it was a fantasy and had creative elements. It just had too much of the fantasy elements where I thought-ok why is that in there? Like why have the portabl ...more

Sal is new to Culeco, a school for the performing arts in Miami, having moved there with his Papi and American Stepmom after his Mami Muerta (the spirit of his mother, who is deceased) kept appearing in their home! He runs afoul of Yasmany, whose locker is next to his, but saves his own skin when the boy bullies him by having a dead chicken appear in Yasmany's locker, but then all traces of it disappear. Gabi is a friend of Yasmany's, but she and Sal hit it off. It turns out that there really wa ...more

You know that feeling when you read a completely brilliant, hysterical, heartbreaking book and it ends and you're just SO RELIEVED that it's part of a series so don't have to say goodbye permanently to the characters or the world? That's how you'll feel when you finish Carlos Hernandez's SAL AND GABI BREAK THE UNIVERSE, and (if you're an adult like me) you'll also probably feel a bit jealous that you didn't have this book when you were in middle school. It's so fantastic.

This books was SO fun. I read it aloud to my 8- and 12-year-old kids and we all laughed SO much. In fact, I'm not sure we've ever laughed so much while reading another book, and we read a LOT. It's got wonderful elements of family and friendship mixed in with a wild, fantastical elements and we cannot WAIT for the next one!

I don’t think it’s hyperbolic to call Carlos Hernandez’ Sal & Gabi Break the Universe a mold-breaker. Any expectations you bring to the book based on the publishing line it’s a part of, the genre it falls into, or the age reader it’s aimed at, are likely to be mistaken. The main characters also don’t fall into expected roles from similar stories.

Rick Riordan’s various series have been mythology-based, and most of the initial titles in the Rick Riordan Presents line have stayed in that mold w

I feel like I'm obligated to start this review by saying I absolutely LOVED this book! From the very beginning, it hooked me in and literally kept me in the same state of pure enjoyment for the entirety of the read.

Sal and Gabi Break the Universe is about, you guessed it, Sal and Gabi. Sal is a new student at a performing arts school in Miami (literally sounds like the best school ever. I can't decide if I want to be a student there or the teacher). Sal and his father and American stepmom had t

Sal and Gabi Break the Universe introduces us to a host of entertaining new characters. I found myself rooting for all of them, even the bully. I love that the characters are realistic, their problems and solutions and thoughts and feelings all rang true for me. I love a hero with relatable flaws! I love when the mc finds them self in situations that force them to grow and both Sal and Gabi face tough things with courage. Obviously, this is fiction and as such has fantastical elements (e.g. a 13 ...more

Sal and Gabi Break the Universe is a fun science fiction story with Cuban and Pop-Culture references. It’s the story of a boy named Sal who moves to Miami, after his mother dies, to attend the Caleco Academy of the Arts; a school where kids can take classes in things they enjoy. It’s so much fun, detention is more of a club. While there, Sal meets Gabi, a reporter for the school newspaper; The Rotten Egg. At first, they are not close, but through the ups and downs of the story, they become frien ...more

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Sal didn't mean to punch a hole in the universe and put a dead chicken in Yasmany's locker.

Oh, wait, yeah, he did.

Meet Sal. He's a lot of things. The new kid. Cuban-American. Diabetic. Aspiring magician. Lover of Skittles. And he can access other dimensions. How did that happen? Well, let's just say it all started after his Mami Viva turned into Mami Muerta...

Now meet Gabi. Student council president. Overachiever. Loves t-shirts w
