I enjoyed the book very much and have started reading book two of the series. The book caught my eye as I am soon to publish a major novel of my own (in several parts) and my working title was A Very Different Family. I may have to reconsider that now so as not to step on Mr. Follett's toes. I do have a few alternatives, so I'm not at a total loss. My book also deals with family building for not just two gay characters, but four and will carry them from their births in 1951 to marriage in 2015, ...more

Full of real and relatable characters and honest, sometimes heartbreaking events, this book serves up a lot of thought-provoking scenarios from a troubling time in our past when HIV was just peeking its nose into our culture. At turns triumphant and incredibly sad, The Awakening is a must-read for those who have loved and lost.
