I read the 1986 version of this book (thank you library free book table) and am reminded that Lonely Planet is the benchmark of travel guides. I appreciate the frankness of what activities/attractions are worth the trip and think that LP cannot be surpassed in terms of cultural information and insights. This isn't a 5 star review only because it is 38 years old.

this is probably the edition i used during my life in japan 92-95. just for getting me through a hitchhiking trip around kyushu, i have fond, grateful memories of this guidebook.

Lonely Planet guides are terrific for traveling on a shoestring.
