Stargazer #2

Doppelganger Girl

For fans of Defy the Stars, Configured and The Hunger Games comes the second thrilling novel in T.R. Woodman's new sci-fi series.

A girl who just wants to fit in. A boy who loves her despite her past. An adventure that could tear them apart, light years from Earth.

When Evelyn woke in a lab as a ten-year-old girl, the research team said her body was a gift. She wasn’t so sure. It seemed like a cruel prank to give a girl a gangly body just in time for puberty and hormones. She felt awkward, and the would-be colonists she traveled with treated her like a science experiment gone awry. For six years she pretended not to care.

Now Evelyn is delivering the colonists to their new world. She is sixteen, and while her intelligence was once artificial, it isn’t any longer. Neither are her feelings. Not her doubts about whether she can protect the colonists from the dangers of their new world. Not her frustration about being treated like an it by the same ungrateful people. Not the unbounded ache she has for the green-eyed boy with the crooked smile, her only friend, or the suffocating uncertainty she feels as she wonders if they could ever be happy together.

But her feelings have no place in the untamed colony. Her burden as caretaker won’t allow for such frivolities, and Evelyn knows if she loses the battle for her place among the settlers, she not only risks her chance of being happy with the boy she loves—she also risks losing her humanity, and could find herself alone, exiled on a strange planet, thousands of light-years from Earth.

Doppelganger Girl follows Jane and the Exodus as the second book in the Stargazer series.

This was a well thought out plot. The characters are great! There is a lot of growing up that Evie has to do in a short span and she is tough enough to do it and stand up for herself.

I got an ARC of this book.

I really loved the first book in this series. This book wasn’t as fun for me. I was a bit let down to be honest.

Let’s start with the best part: my favorite character was now the main character. Evelyn/Evie was promoted to the main character in this book. She was by far my favorite character from the first book. In this book, she was just annoying. She was agonizing about a boy while dealing with life threatening situations. I just didn’t buy it. I didn’t ship it. It detracted from the character and the novel so hard.

The worst part: the forced romance between Evelyn and Joseph. Seriously. This book would have been so much better if that sub plot was just erased. There was no need for it. There was so much else to love about this book, but that love plot and Evelyn’s obsession with him was just so annoying. Then there was the awkward flirting on Earth. Seriously. I just want to beg Woodman to stop trying to write a romance plot.

This book was also so much more predictable. It was a bad YA romance in space, that followed the formula of the first novel. The big confrontations at the end were easily guessed from the beginning of the book. The major plot points weren’t surprising. This book really just didn’t live up to the first book. The writing was still pretty wonderful, but all the failed sub plots and over the top religious tone dragged the book down for me. The characters having strong faith, YES. The characters trying to make sense of the world through their faith, YES! The characters saying God is healing someone through technology and giving long speeches about it, no. It just started to ring as super false and forced to me.

So I am curious how the third book is, but I am worried that the first book will just be so amazing that none of the others can compare.

This episode of the story is told from the perspective of a more-than-usual unique individual. Not only is Evie working her way through each challenge presented to her, but learning her own humanity and potential as she goes along. But, aren't we all doing the same thing? Our circumstances are certainly different, but we share the need to learn our purpose and try to accept our gifts as well as our short-comings. I found myself reflecting on various scenes from my past and looking toward the future, spurred on by Evie's each experience. This was not just an enjoyable story, but also one that could touch your life. I received an advance copy for free in exchange for an honest review, no matter the number of stars or the contents of the review. T.R. (Travis) earned each star, and I look forward to more of this adventure and any other works he shares with the world.

I got an ARC of this book but life has been hectic so I was slower than normal getting to it. I give this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars because it ripped out my heart and destroyed me! I LOVE this series and am eager for book three but if it makes me cry even more than this, there is gonna be a whole lotta trouble

Evelyn - love her character

I love her character and look forward to more adventures from her, but the ending was quite sad and unlike the first book that ended in hope this book ends in despair.

Wow! Si Fi World Exodus. Human reactions

Great read. AI becomes real. Emotions pro & con. Can we escape to another world? Plot shocks. Believable characters. Are we ready to go?
