Genç Osmanlı sultanı 2. Mehmed, iktidarını nihayet sağlamlaştırdığı 1452 yılının sonunda sefer hazırlıklarına başladı; hedefi, Türk efsanelerinin “Kızıl Elma” dediği Konstantinopolis şehriydi. Bin yıldan uzun süredir varlığını sürdürmüş Doğu Roma'nın başkenti ve son kalıntısı; onun tasavvur ettiği yeni Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun payitahtı olacaktı. Genç sultanın 80.000 kişilik ordusu ve yepyeni bir teknoloji olan barutlu toplardan kurulu muazzam kuşatma katarı; son imparator 11. Konstantinos'un idaresindeki 10.000 askerin savunduğu şehri dört ay süren destansı kuşatma boyunca aman vermeden topa tuttu. Nihayet Bizans'ın efsanevi surları yeni silahlara daha fazla dayanamayıp yıkıldıklarında son imparator kaçması için yapılan tüm ricaları geri çevirerek elinde kılıcıyla can verdi. Birçok tarihçinin Ortaçağ'ın sonu ve Yeniçağ'ın başı için sembolik bir dönüm noktası olarak kabul ettiği İstanbul'un fethi, en önemlisi, varlığını 1922'ye dek sürdürecek olan Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun yükseldiği andı.

Estava à espera de um livro mais profundo acerca da temática, sobretudo por ser publicado pela Osprey. Parece que se forçou um resumo demasiadamente curto, que limitou o claro entendimento dos fatores apresentados. Não obstante, o autor adiciona bastantes fotografias tirada por ele mesmo e alguns mapas em que se esforça por caracterizar o ambiente político. No meu entender, ele não foi completamente bem sucedido.

A great book on the Fall of Constantinople / Conquest of Istanbul in 1453.
Nicolle details the campaign from both sides and provides great context and graphics to support the work.
An excellent read!

This is a good retelling of the final downfall of the Roman Empire in the East in 1453. An epochal event (even as the Byzantines had been reduced and reduced), I think it's best read after reading "Lost to the West" which puts the details here into more historical context.

Decent overview of the brief siege, that marked the final demise of the Byzantine empire and perhaps more importantly the ascent of the Ottoman.
