3.5...slightly spoilerish review to follow

In some moments I think I really liked The Queen's Wings, then I remember that what I liked was what The Queen's Wings was trying to be...and largely failing. It was trying to be a snarky paranormal romance WITH DRAGONS and Dragon shifters are my absolute favourite type of shifter. I also love witty heroines with a penchant for sarcastic side commentary and self-mockery (within limits, of course). By all accounts I should have loved this book. But I just didn't.

Don't get me wrong; I liked some aspects of it. I did like Carolyn's witty comments and willingness to stand up to all the alpha dragons around her. I loved that she occasionally channelled Kaname Chidori and rolled the metaphorical (and literal) newspaper. I liked her obsession with books. Now, there is a hoard I can relate to! I liked the humor. I liked the actual world created here, where dragons and humans have come to some social accord and live together. I liked the way it played with the concept of power, since the female dragons were both revered and victimized. I liked Reed in the last half of the book and I liked Jack and Niall. So, the book wasn't a total bust.

However, it also never clicked for me. It didn't flow smoothly. The writing did. That's not what I mean. The writing was fine. It was the plot. It just stuttered along, occasionally making leaps and stops. As an example, for 45% of the book Reed was standoffish and even hostile toward Carolyn. Then, in a matter of a paragraph or so, he suddenly got all affectionate. There was nothing to instigate a change in behaviour. It was a TOTAL attitude 180, with no cause. Even worse it was inferred that this might have been some Machiavellian attempt to curry favour and control and that seemed a lot more likely than that he just suddenly decided he liked her. And even though the reader is told it's not, they even get their happy ending, it didn't feel natural. Not at all!

I also hated that almost all the other women in the book were villainized. (The few who weren't were victimized.) It's like watching any of a 100 Disney movies and finding that anytime you have an older woman in any position of power (the queen, the witch, the sorceress, the step mother, etc) she's evil. It's the same old subtle sexist, 'see, woman can't be allowed power' crap we're fed all the time. Why couldn't even one of the dragon queens be working toward the good of the species instead of her own comfort?

I'll grant that they had a pretty crap deal, but in the end, the 'evil queens' felt like a cheap and easy plot device. Especially considering the fact that

So in the end, I'll give this a middling rating. I liked what the book was aiming for, I just ended up not much liking what the book was. On a side note, I find the description wildly inaccurate.

I ended up liking this a lot more than I thought I would. I would have given it four stars if I didn't feel that the ending seemed to drag on just a tad bit too long, it wasn't annoyingly long, I just think it could have been better if there weren't a few small filler parts.

This author has a sense of humor. The writing isn't perfect, but woth the humor it almost seems to be on purposeThe character's were likeable, flawed, and easy to relate too, not the be being a dragon part (which would be awesome if I could relate to that). I especially love the little detail where Carolyn, the female lead, can't seem to not misplace her purse, and she is also a book hoarder. Also, it must have been wonderful to finally prove so many people wrong about such a major thing like Carolyn got to.

This also got me thinking a bit. What would it be like to have someone else also living in your thoughts? A soul with no body slips into Carolyn's mind in order to keep out of the dragon version of heaven. At time this soul makes an ass out of Carolyn by taking control of her speech. Most the time she uses this to flirt.

Be aware that this is intended for adults. It contains vulgar language and explicit sex.

This is the first in a series, I will definitely be continuing. Hopefully my library has an ecopy of book two. If not I may have to put it on hold.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Chelle:

This book was really greatI I love when a review book becomes a new obsession... I honestly couldn't put it down and it was exactly what I needed.

Jamie K. Schmidt is a new author for me. When I got an email about Entangled's new May releases and noticed this one on the list I decided to request it for review and see what would happen. I was long overdue for a good dragon shifter book and decided it couldn't hurt to support a new author. I didn't expect to read it in one long sitting with a smile on my face almost the entire time.

The Queen's Wings, the first of a new Paranormal Romance series THE EMERGING QUEENS, was witty, full of fun pop culture references, magic, mayhem, romance and was, in a word, just FUN!

Ms. Schmidt has a knack for plucky female leads. Carolyn draws you in from page one with her no-filter tendency to think aloud and say largely inappropriate things at the most inappropriate times. Most people thinks she's completely nuts, but aside from her being an emerging dragon Queen, she's really just like the rest of us - a book addict with an internal goofball. She was instantly likable and relatable.

Reed is one of those alpha males that you just want to smack upside the head. He's hot, sexy, sometimes standoffish, and yet has this romantic edge that shows through in the subtlest of ways and yet he's just... aaarrrgh. He's a bit stuffy, tries to stick to the "ways of the people", and yet it was really fun to see Carolyn exasperate and challenge him and have him capitulate. I will admit that I actually wanted her with Jack (he was the easier of the two choices), but was glad that while there were multiple (somewhat) love interests, it wasn't a love triangle and that things turned out the way that they did. They really are the perfect match.

The world building was both what we've grown to know and love in dragon shifter paranormal romance, but also new, unique and exciting. There were multiple types of dragon shifters in The Queen's Wings, and having the matriarchal structured society was very cool. It reinforced the fact that strong females would be prevalent throughout the EMERGING QUEENS series.

I LOVED the little twist at the end and I think that all book addicts will appreciate with Ms. Schmidt did with Carolyn's HEA!

I would definitely recommend this book for all paranormal romance fans that like dragon shifters, and even those who think they might want to try some. I also highly recommend it to readers who appreciate a light-hearted read with a strong, yet goofy female lead.

I'm really looking forward to more in the EMERGING QUEENS series! Way to go Jamie. :)

Okay, first I will confess about something. Usually I request any Entangled title, especially the paranormal and fantasy ones based on blurbs and reviews. Sadly, until now almost all of them just become an "okay" read for me. That's why I don't have high expectation when I request to read and review The Queen's Wings, the first installment of the new series by Jamie K.Schmidt, The Emerging Queens. She's also a new author to read for me. I request this because I love dragon. Always love read about them, fascinated by their live, myth and legend. Also the worldbuilding seems unique.

After reading.. wow! I really enjoy The Queen's Wings. A lot. Sure I have my reason why I give just 4 stars, but let me state first why I think that The Queen's Wing is another keeper for my paranormal romance and urban fantasy's shelves. First, the narrator. This book told from Carolyn's POV. Carolyn is our heroine here and she's witty, have enough sarcasm and.. a book hoarder! Now this is the heroine that I can related to. She believe that she is a dragon about to shift, but no one believe her. Turn that she had been possessed by Ariana, a daughter of Esmeralda, the dragon queen of North America, and that's why her dragon ability awakened. But fate decide to throw many obstacle for Carolyn, since she is one of the rare dragon queen.

Let me explain for a little. In Carolyn's world, human and dragon live together, but of course dragon think human is lower creature than them. The dragons have a problem, for their existence is near extinction. Just five dragon female, called Queen that existed and they guard them with their soul. Being a Queen is not fun too, that's what Carolyn thought. For they more like a queen bee, you know, constantly make babies, and that's is not the life that Carolyn want. Especially when she fallin' hard for Reed and just desire him. Things get complicated when Carolyn always in danger. Make matters worse, Ariana who reside in her body desire Jack, Reed's friend and love to take over Carolyn's body. There's also another Queen that threatened Carolyn's life and soon Carolyn must learn that her life is full of lies and tangle of deceit and she must be careful to place her trust.

First POV is a hit and miss for me. If I love the MC's voice, I will love the book. If not, it's will be so hard to finish reading the book. I love that Carolyn is witty and not easily give up. Her attitude is hilarious and her interaction with Ariana really cracked me up. Even she want to be a dragon, the idea for her to be a queen and breeds so many dragon do not appeal for her, because she just love one man, Reed. I love that there was no love triangle, because Carolyn's attraction to Jack was Ariana doing. Alas, I think Carolyn and Reed relationship somehow too rushed. While the blurb state that Reed try to avoid Carolyn even he desire her, actually no need a long time for them to admit their feeling. Even of course there's some obstacle that rock their love to add some drama.

What I love more is how Ms Jamie show how a book nerd Carolyn can be. There was a mention of Kristan Higgins.. and... J.D.Robb!! OMG, I almost squeal and if Carolyn is a person I will hug her and we can have our own conversation about In Death series! My complaint is.. a misspronounce for Roarke's name! It's ROARKE, not Rourke, ugh! I doubt they will correct it once this book go wild (oh, it's already released actually), but yeah, this little typo kinda girrated my nerves.

Ms Jamie also make an interesting world building. There some kind of dragons, like Drake, Western (Reed and Jack are Western dragon), Quetzacoatl, and etc. Anyway,I got a feeling that because of manuscript page limit, something feel amiss. I don't mind if The Queen's Wings have more than 300-400 pages (I read the pdf, and it's have 265 pages), so the author can expand the world building. That's why I don't give 5 stars, while I really want to. The half last part feel jumble and so many things happen that make my head spinning. It's also break the pace, make it faster and it's make me a little bit uncomfortable. Also the ending, somehow I'm not satisfied with what happen to Carolyn, even she kinda got her HEA. Alas, the next book will not feature Carolyn. I really love her and want to know more about Carolyn's life after this book and her love life with Reed.

I see that some reviewers on Goodreads shelf this as "erotic". I think the heat level still in steamy factor, and I'm glad the sexual tension are plenty. The Queens also supposed to be a sensual creature because they are have so many dragon men in their harem.

If you love your paranormal romance (or urban fantasy romance) with an unique world building and dragon theme, you will love The Queen's Wings. Also if you fans of Charley Davidson series, I guess you will want to try to read this. Last, can't wait to read the next installment and I hope it's as good (or better) as The Queen's Wings!

Wooooow. I absolutely LOVED this book. It was a little disorienting right at the beginning, but after I relaxed (nerves reading a new author and all that), I was absolutely enchanted by the world as presented by Ms. Schmidt. I loved the whole dragons-are-real thing and particularly that Carolyn was convinced (despite all signs to the contrary) that she was actually a dragon (and, to boot, in the end her dragon-type was HILARIOUS!).

I liked the relationship as it developed between dragon Reed and Carolyn. He really REALLY didn't care for her in the beginning. I also liked that there was a bit of a love square developing (like a love triangle, but there were four parties involved...trust me, it makes sense when you read it).

So much went on in this book it's hard to describe it all. All I know is it all worked together for me so well that I'm absolutely in love with this book and I may have to go read it again just to revel in its awesomeness.

I absolutely can't WAIT for the next Emerging Queens series. 5 gargoyles for The Queen's Wings!

I CANNOT DO IT ANYMOREEEEEE!!

I picked this book out my kindle & regret wasting an hour or so of my life. I’ve never seen such a downbad fmc until today for absolutely NO REASON. One this book is just unserious all across the board.

This lady is 26, and believes she’s a dragon. Though everyone & their MOM believes otherwise. She doesn’t smell like a dragon at all. But suddenly she has a haunted house and just THROWS UP VOMIT THAT BURNS STUFF??? Oh here’s the plot twist!!! The mmc is Reed who dead sister who was WEEKS OLD died under her home. And is possessing her pulling a “The Host” 2.0 to kiss Jack because somehow a dead baby is able to grow and HOW DOES THAT MAKE SENSE.

Queens are birthing machines yet suddenly this fmc is without any confirmation just the fact ppl keep trying to kidnap her. To a point she escapes the mmc to then get snatched by someone else. My breaking point as of now is the fact REED IS THE MOST unserious dense clown I’ve seen in my life (yes I’m upset). He gets jealous of any guy near her after saying she’s nothing but a delulu human. But is content with her smashing other guys because it’s for the population and his race. SOMEHOW HE doesn’t even seem to care the fmc caught him kissing another queen and tells the fmc (who is a QUEEN “APPARENTLY”) THAT SHE HAS TO CLAIM HIM SO HE CAN BE LOYAL. AND JUST LIKE THAT SHES PLANNING WAYS TO GET OTHER QUEENS SO SHE CAN HAVE HIM PICK AND CHOOSE HER??!!! IS THIS GREYS ANATOMY!! TO THEN DROP THE KISS AND START HAVING SEX???!?!! Oh yall pissed me OFF.

I skim these few pages after this intended kiss discussion to see her make me more mad by wanting to make him scream during sex only for him to say they don’t scream. Yeah goodbye

Carolyn Donovan is convinced she is going to shift into a dragon any day. Unfortunately for her nearly everyone else is sure she is just nuts. Even her best friend looks at her with pity in her eyes. After all there hasn't been a female dragon hatched or even shifted in over a thousand years. At present there are only five in the world. The last one hatched was kidnapped centuries before. When Carolyn is caught in the middle of an assault on the dragon embassy she briefly comes into contact with Jack and Reed, two dragons working for the FBI. When the fate of Arianna, the last female dragon to hatch comes to light Carolyn's life changes forever. The time has come for Reed to get over his dislike for humans, because fate has put Carolyn in his life and Carolyn likes what she sees.

I fell in love with Carolyn half way through the first paragraph. She has believed in herself all the while facing the ridicule and scorn of family and friends, even strangers degrading remarks. She still has stood firm against them all. I could easily fall for Niall and his absent minded professor persona. Jack's easy going manner hides a sharp mind and a warrior's talent. Reed's brooding demeanor and cutting tongue keeps you reminded that there is danger all around.

Jamie Schmidt has used humor and witty repartee to keep the story from becoming to dark and heavy. This is a series that leaves you longing for more. The fast pace of the story keeps you from putting it down until the last page. I personally can not wait until Ms. Schmidt graces us with the next in the series, "The Queen's Flight". Pick up a copy of "The Queen's Wings" and pick out your favorite dragon before they are all spoken for.

Hahahahaha!

Oh god. This had to be the funniest dragon romance book I’ve ever read. I mean, ever.

I’ll admit, I sided with everyone else and labelled Carolyn “Crazy” before I reached the end of Chapter 1. Then I changed the label to “Half-Crazy” before settling on “Crazy” once again. Granted, she’s not really crazy. I take that back. By herself, she is a bit looney but add the spirit of a dead Queen to the mix and you end up with a whole bunch of fun that’s waiting to be experienced.

Reed said it best. “I’m not used to a Queen like you. None of us are.”

Carolyn’s very human approach to what being Queen means makes her different from the Five Queens. She’s not interested in living in the lap of luxury while men seek her to have their eggs. She’s happy with a simple life and only wants one man. Unfortunately, that one man is Reed. Or maybe it should be fortunately.

Reed’s a dragon through and through. He lives, eats, breathes, dreams, drinks, and sleeps dragon law and tradition. To be around Carolyn as she adapts to his people’s way of life turns him upside-down and leaves him banging his head on a wall because she really isn’t like any Queen he’s met before. Their arguments are amusing; it’s rare anything gets resolved between them. Their agreement to disagree seems to be the norm.

Carolyn did keep me laughing. She has this hilarious habit of speaking her thoughts out loud without realizing it, which tends to make for interesting conversations between characters. But for all the fun and humor, there were plenty of serious parts of the story. The most poignant is close to the end. My heart bottomed out at what happened. The happy ending Carolyn thought she’d have, didn’t happen and the anguish she felt was almost tangible.

Oh, don’t think she doesn’t get an HEA. She does. It’s just…different than what she thought but it suits her. She and Reed get their happily ever after, flying off into the sunset moment, and it’s well-deserved.

Will there be more Queens from Ms. Schmidt? I hope so! The Queens might have been a rare breed at the beginning of this book, but the renewed hope for more at the end sets the stage to introduce more beautiful Queens who, like Carolyn, buck tradition and pursue the happily ever after they want, need, and deserve.

Was so thrilled to get to read this novel because a good one with dragons are far and few between. This one is even a double plus because female dragons are part of the tale also. This is the first time reading this author for me but I must say she does have the ability to snatch you up right away with the beginning with her character Carolyn who also is very humorous. She is also one persistent gal or should I say dragon in achieving her goal even though not many believe her until a event happens that changes all that. She also lives in what she claims is a haunted house and thanks to the course they are going to be going she was indeed right because it is a female dragon who would of been queen who was slaughtered many many years ago. The one dragon she works for it also happened to have been his daughter. The one dragon who is sent to her is one fine, fine hot on a stick FBI Reed who does not much care for humans and starts out believing that is all she is really but duluded. Things will happen with signs to show how not so human she is that will be having him change his tune. Another faboulous thing I like about this novel is they are not a secret from others also their lifestyle is also explained very well where a first time reader in this genre would not be in the dark on alot of things. A curse must be broken in order to enable other queen's to emerge or even for that matter reproduce. Only the five excisting queens do so a lifestyle Carolyn is not to keen on. As mentiioned earlier was carried away on this most entertaining packed with fire novel that also rung out quite a few chuckles with the witty banter that does incur. Put that with a refreshing storyline and this is a novel that is a great escape for a day because that will be how quick it is read. The romance a scorcher with a conclusion that is quite rewarding to all. Received a arc for a honest review.

The first book in a new dragon series is a mesmerizing action packed romance. Carolyn is used to everyone thinking she’s crazy when she insists that she is going to shift into a dragon and FBI dragon Reed is no different. He’s proven wrong when Carolyn starts to shift and suddenly she’s the new Queen on the block with a never-ending line of suitors and enemies and Reed must face his fears – and feelings to save the woman he realizes he can’t do without.

This fast paced and smooth flowing plot keeps readers on the edge of their seat with action, suspense, drama, humor and romance. The author makes it easy for readers to picture each scene as its happening with well written events and details that inspire vivid images and the well orchestrated action scenes are believable and exciting. The strong compelling characters are charismatic, easily related to and grab the reader’s attention from the very beginning.

The attraction between Reed and Carolyn radiates heat from every page and the sex scenes are hot and steamy and the drama in their relationship ensures that the reader never gets bored. Reed is a great alpha dragon, he has the arrogant male with a disdain for humans attitude along with a sexy bad boy vibe that makes the reader swoon, while Carolyn has the reader empathizing with her plight and cheering her on throughout the story. The tale inspires lots of smiles and chuckles with some very snarky dialogue, some sad moments, quite a bit of anger, and a lot of spine tingling delicious anticipation.

The author has created a fantastic world of captivating characters where dragons are the norm and humans live along side them. There are lots of refreshingly different elements and some surprising twists that keep the readers on their toes and I really have to say that I love how Carolyn got revenge on her brother at the end. I can’t wait to read the next book in this enchanting series.

HAPPY RELEASE WEEK!

This was FUN! Carolyn is nuts, at least everyone around her, humans and dragons, believe she is anyway. In this time and place, which is contemporary, people know about dragons. Have known about them for ages. The thing is, due to a curse and some magic, only male dragons are born or shift when a human reaches puberty. There are only five Queen dragons, and even all of the eggs they lay hatch males.

So while it would be "nice" if Carolyn was a shifting Queen, no one believes she really will. Even though the bloody writing on her spare room wall and the fact she keeps waking up naked on her roof should lead people to believe her, no one does.

Until she spits acid on a couple of drakes. Yeah...good times! Then everyone wants to kidnap or kill her.

She's got a long dead dragon in her head, one who wants to jump the very hot Jack, and she has the dragon she's lusting after hating her because she's still human.

Yep, what a ride. I thoroughly enjoyed the dragon shifters and the mystery of just what was happening in the dragon world. While this one is steamy, I thought the love scenes were just a bit "rote" and nothing special. I found myself skimming, a lot. I wanted to get back to the dialog and the action, which were lots of fun.

I sincerely hope that Ms. Schmidt has more to come with looks at other Emerging Queens!

*Thank you, Entangled and Jamie Schmidt, for the opportunity to read The Queen's Wings.

Carolyn believes she's going to shift into a dragon but everyone says she's to old...gasp, she's . There are only 5 known female dragons in the world. If she is one, she will be a great prize and a great threat. Reed is an FBI dragon who needs to protect her...but she throws him for a loop. Carolyn has no filter on her mouth, so somethings she says are wildly inappropriate but very funny....you can't help but love her.
All her life she's been saying she's a dragon and people...even family..have looked at her like she's nuts. Now that it looks like she really is a Queen, she's not sure she wants the kind of life that's been described to her...riches, sure....a palace, no problem...but she will need to be a Brood Mother so she can help populate the dragon species. She wants one guy, not a bunch of bodies.
Now that the rest of the dragons are finding out about her, some want to protect, some to bed her, but some also want to destroy her.
In one week she's traveled to Mexico and Paris, had a stay in a lab in New York and a hospital in Connecticut, met a dragon slayer, kissed a dragon, slept with another dragon, found out another dragon was possessing her, was almost kidnapped, almost sacrificed, became homeless and slugged a big shot.
Through it all she's funny, sweet, fiesty and more than a match for a surly Reed.
Carolyn is fantastic, so's the story. I really, really loved it....you will too.

I loved this book. The setting is the modern day world where dragons aren't myths of history but instead reality. Carolyn is a edgy, funny heroine who has always dreamed of being a dragon. She is ostracized by friends and family, and eventually lands in a haunted house in New Jersey. She can't shift into her dragon form and eventually meets Reed a FBI agent because she is vomiting acid. He checks out her story and we learn the history of the ghost and how she has been interacting with Carolyn. They eventually hook up after meeting Reed's mother and she learns about dragon history and culture.

This is a truly original story that created a believable world, complete with history, male/female dynamic, and culture. It was funny and steamy with creative use of the paranormal elements. (not dragons) It is one of the best shifter books I have read this year. I was given a free copy for a honest review.

Carolyn knows that she's going to shift into a dragon. Why won't anyone believe her. They think she is deluded and needs therapy. During an attack on the Dragon Embassy Carolyn shows signs of emerging to her full potential. Now she has FBI dragon Reed and his partner Jack as her guards. Things are getting complicated very fast. She is constantly in danger. Why is she possessed by Arianna, a dead queen. The Queen's Wing is a wild ride of passion, danger and intrigue. I loved this story! Carolyn is a feisty heroine. She stands her ground against her enemies. Reed is a determined dragon who vows to protect what is his. What a fiery romance! The secondary characters are an intriguing bunch. I want to know more about them. The plot has many unexpected twists and turns that I was hooked from page one. Jamie K. Schmidt supplies such humorous dialogue that I was snickering as I read this story. She is a new to me author but I plan to change that. This book is a keeper!

This author is new to me.

The first in this series has won me over. Reed is a tough dragon who with his partner discover the emergence of a new Queen. Since there are so few to mate with they are cherished. All Carolyn ever wanted to be was a dragon. She longed for freedom and once she discovers her wishes are about to come true their now everything she thought they would be. She is kidnapped, almost sacrificed, and has fallen for a Reed. Reed has a dislike of humans which she still is and might not ever be able to change to her dragon form. This book is loaded with humor, sexy dragons, and lots of action. In short this series offers a lot and has more than delivered.

I'm a fan and can't wait for the next book.

What do you get when you take a sassy lady, a handsome shape shifter and chuck in a couple of fire breathing dragons??? An amazing read! I stumbled upon this book quite by accident via a blog. I needed an urban fantasy fix so did a Google search for sassy heroine meets arrogant handsome hero...and TADA!
Best Google result EVER.
The book was fast paced enough to keep me guessing and of course add in a little romance and I was hooked. Note that I am a fan of sassy v arrogant and waiting for fireworks.
The descriptions of the dragons were detailed enough that I could close my eyes and picture exactly what the author was trying to convey. And the ending....well the bit before the ending was like a sucker punch and I admit my eyes did tear up.
I can not wait for the second book.

A great read

Jamie's style of writing includes a sense of humor and easy to read format. I read this book in entirety while on vacation in New Zealand. I enjoyed the love triangle between Reed, Carolyn and Jack. We should all live by some of the rules of the dragons. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

The Queen’s Wings is an amazingly good book about dragons. We’re introduced to a world where dragons are commonplace but female dragons aren’t. There was a curse put in place that has made it so that a female dragon hasn’t hatched or shape shifted in 1000 years. In walks our main lady, Carolyn. She is absolutely certain that she is a dragon but no one believes her and writes her off as a nutcase or a groupie. That is until bizarre things start happening. Reed, much to his dismay, is assigned to watch and protect Carolyn. He can’t stand humans and doesn’t believe for a second that she really is a dragon. Unfortunately he also finds himself drawn to her. You would think that when her dragon finally shows herself Reed would feel relieved, but obviously that is not the case. Now on top of everything the cult that put the original curse on female dragons is back at it and wants to make the curse permanent. Then the race against time, the cult and all those pesky feelings starts.

I absolutely loved this book. It had twists and turns, it had tension and comedy and all the lovely things that a dragon romance novel can bring you. The ending, I can’t tell you more because no one likes a spoiler but, chef’s kiss. I loved the chemistry between all the characters. I loved the comedy that came with Carolyn’s dragon slowly surfacing. If you are looking for a book about dragons, this is for you. If you are looking for a romcom this is for you. If you are in a slump and just need something a little different this is for you. I just loved this book and how it rescued me from the black hole that is a reading slump. It came to me at the perfect time and I hope it can do the same for you. Please check this book out!

I don’t think I need to say it, but I am not a professional writer or critic. I’m just a reader who has an idea of what she likes and doesn’t like. As such, everything should be taken with a grain of salt.
On with the review;
I must be missing something because while almost everyone else gave it 3 or four stars, I can’t go over one.

The Good;
*The premise itself is great. Honestly, the best thing about this story is that the concept of the story is so interesting;
A young woman knows that she’s a dragon, but no one will believe her as something prevents her from shifting. There are other signs, and once she finds people who believe her, she finds out they want her to become a brood mother basically. This is horrible, but you can see the dragons' reasoning;
As there are only 5 female dragons in the whole world, they’re under threat of going extinct, so they feel they have to compromise their morals when it comes to breeding. However, since there are so few female dragons, the ones they do have are revered, thus have influence and power, neither of which they want to sacrifice or share. As such, they’re not exactly keen on more females appearing. While all this goes on there’s also a subplot involving a cult that cast the spell to limit the birth of females.
The romantic subplot is that Carolyn is in love with a dragon named Reed and wants a monogamous relationship with him, however, he feels that wouldn’t be right as she needs to be with a lot of people to lay eggs for the future of their race. It's the premise that promises a lot and has potential, but it didn't live up to it.
*Carolyn was a decent protagonist. I liked her and was sympathetic to her plight. She knew she was a dragon but everyone thought she was crazy, even her own family. Hell, even the readers start to wonder for a while. Sanity aside, Carolyn is funny, has good morals—minus one or two questionable things—and will stand up for herself and her rights against anyone, even dragons. She’s a bit of a damsel but that’s not a big deal for me, and it makes sense as for most of the story she’s a normal woman against dragons. There’s only so much you can do without magic or a weapon. That being said, she has no issues with a shotgun or using a rolled-up magazine. I really liked that she never let Reed gaslight her and let him know when he screwed up. She also stuck to her convictions the whole way through.
*The dilemma is actually pretty fair and even on both sides. On one hand, Carolyn did not want to be a broodmare and wanted a monogamous relationship. On the other, because of the limited number of females, few dragons were being born and risked extinction. Both sides actually do have their points and it’s very much a autonomy vs the greater good for a race of creatures.

The Bad:
*The worst thing is that the story is mainly dialogue-driven, and the pace is nearly non-existent. I mean it, there are barely any descriptions. 90% of the book is talking, half of which is exposition.
*The pacing didn’t feel smooth. Hardly anything is built up, and things are just tossed at the readers. It’s like, bam, bam, bam, exposition, oh hey this is happening now, boom, I love you, oh we’re in Paris, kidnapping, I hate you, etc. Honestly, there were so many plot jumps, I swear its physical form would be a grasshopper.
*All in all, the romance was boring. The romance was greatly hindered by the pacing of the story It’s not helped by the fact the romance comes out of nowhere and felt forced. Seriously, there was more chemistry and build-up between Carolyn and Jack. Not only that, it’s hard to believe that she’s so attached to Reed because, if I’m reading correctly, then they’ve only known each other for two weeks at most. The best I can say is that it’s not abusive like SO many other romances are—though there’s a lot of manipulation going on—and at least the leads are their own characters with their own personalities, likes, and desire. They’re not single-mindedly focused on the other and do have their own wants and needs.
*Weirdly enough, there are way too many plots but not enough story.
I explained most of the plots above in the concept, but there’s also
All these plots are squished into a book that isn’t very long and is mostly dialogue and spoken exposition. And worse than that, a lot of these plots come out of nowhere or are announced with one or two lines.

Personal gripes:
*While you can see his POV, Reed is quite unlikeable (to me anyway).
Reed is very racist against humans. Don’t get me wrong the other dragons are as well in their own ways, but I’m judging it a bit harsher in Reed, why? Because he’s the romantic protagonist we’re supposed to root for.
However, this is supposed to be Book 1 in a series, so perhaps he gets better later, but that doesn’t make him great here.
I was with Carolyn when she said, “You don’t deserve me.” He spends most of the book manipulating her, and never stops saying that as a female she has a duty to repopulate the dragons, basically ignoring her autonomy. Again, I understand his reasoning, but it still irks me.
**I can especially see this as a breaking point for childfree readers who are happy in their lifestyle and get annoyed being told that it’s their responsibility to have kids. At the very least, Reed isn’t treated as being in the right for this.
*Minor, but I ordered the paperback version, and the cover is dull as hell. It’s just a photoshopped guy with bat wings and fire at the bottom. The one on this site is much cooler, and I would have preferred that on my hard copy. My feelings are that the covers should be interesting to look at that way even if the story suck, you can have cool décor.

In conclusion; The book reads off of something from Wattpad, which isn’t an insult, it’s just formatting style. If you like Wattpad-style books, then maybe it won’t matter to you. However, my enjoyment was in the concepts introduced and the main character only, hence the one-star rating. Still, other people liked it okay, so I may be missing something.
I would say skip it, or at the very least don’t bother buying the book.

Starts Delightful and Ends Magical

Usual when I read a description of a book that claims it is funny, I am skeptical. This book did start off delightfully funny. The story is set in a world where dragons are known to humans and live and work among humans. But not necessarily as equals because many dragons think they are better than humans, and human women are treated only as short term hook ups. The heroine of this book is a human that believes she will turn into a dragon. She is being tested and watched but as yet no symptoms of imminent shifting show up. The delightful and funny part is her absolute certainty she will become a dragon, and her good nature when others make light fun of her. Lightly, because she is well liked. Ok, so at this point in the book, bad things start to happen. The dragons are attacked, and Carolyn starts to show some signs that she may in fact become a dragon shifter. A whole lot then happens, and the book takes on a darker edge. Carolyn starts to learn why there are only 5 female dragons but a couple thousand male dragons. Life as an emerging rare female dragon is not looking so exciting as it was when she was a naive human. And the attacks ramp up. I loved the ending of the book. It was magical and uplifting once Carolyn gets through all the angst. But as I think back on the story now that I finished the book, I feel sorry and sympathetic to the male dragons. In the beginning they came off arrogant, but when you really understand their lives they had as sad an existence as the female dragons. Things will change now. The ending of this book is just a new beginning for the dragon shifter race.

I really loved Carolyn! And another character I can't reference without spoiling it. This was a very fun read and the reason I purchased it was because of this character's humor. I love an MC who is a bit of a mess but has that inner strength as well. Full disclosure, I generally find a lot of Entangled published paranormals with a repeated element that often rubs me the wrong way so I normally avoid buying from that line. I bought this one on sale and it's the first Entangled paranormal author that seems to push past that element with a very likable MC. So, really well done author!

The book has a lot of good morality questions addressed such as sacrificing for the good of the many even if it's contrary to what the individual wants. The queens are both victims but also manipulators because of that. I like that the MC calls out the dreadful situation of the queens and what they devolved into because of it.

The love interest is a bit of a douche but I felt like you saw hints of him growing close to Carolyn even as he claimed duty and this is the way of things. At times you do wonder, Carolyn, bebe, you can do better LOL, but I did feel the push/pull which makes romances work. The end was quite something and there was a point I was a little mad but pushed through and glad I did to see Carolyn get a good ending. She deserved it after everything she went through. I'd definitely rec this book for humor/dragon shifter/relatable MC.

This is the lighter side of romance with a bit of comedy thrown in. I don't normally read those kinds of books because they just don't keep my attention. I was surprised with this one because it did keep interested.

I just had to know what Carolyn was going to do and say next. I found myself laughing out loud a few times over her antics. Carolyn is a truly likeable character. I found her to be funny, smart, sassy, determined and somebody who knows what she wants. If not somebody who knows her own value. I found her to be somebody willing to settle for less then she deserves.

Reed on the other hand... I found to be completely unlikeable. He had no redeeming qualities about him at all. He was rude, arrogant, weak, unbending, and uncompromising. Normally some of those qualities are a good thing in a man... not in Reed's case. Not once in this story did Reed choose Carolyn in this story over anything.. it was always anything but her and then had the nerve to blame it in on her. Saying she didn't understand, that things weren't done that way. Trying to convince her to be something she wasn't. The lies he told her... the list goes on and on with this guy. I find myself wishing that Carolyn had chosen any other dragon then Reed. She said it best herself... he didn't deserve her.

Simply fantastic read!

Who *doesn't* want to be a shape shifter?? Carolyn's so convinced she is one that she's been going to doctors and therapists for years. She gets horrible burps, her house is haunted, she gets kidnapped multiple times, and she keeps trying to drown herself.

Jack's charming and hot, Reed's rude and hot, Niall's a fantastic father figure, and the other studs are, well, studs.

I laughed out load multiple times, sobbed twice, and shared numerous excerpts with my husband and most of my kids.

Utterly fantastic! I'm going to reread it right now.

Contains 2 sex scenes and maybe a dozen swear words. Hence the 4 star rating. Also, the proofreader didn't. Not only were there an incredible number of typos, the drafts weren't wholly melded and entirely wrong words used (pouring over a book, and it wasn't a drink they were pouring).

This book had me completely fascinated with Carolyn’s story. I was so invested. And then toward the end, it sped up. Details were dropped, and now I’m left with a nasty taste in my mouth. I won’t write spoilers but I didn’t even get a description of Carolyn at the end. It wasn’t described and it was rushed. I am completely and irrevocably irked about the fact that this was a fantastic book that had me hanging on the edge and then dropped me off with barely an ending. I would have given it 5 stars, had the last two chapters been explained and the events that unfolded actually make sense. So now here I sit, finished with the book, with the feeling of an unfinished ending in my chest. And no, the next book does not feature the same perspective if you were wondering about getting more information that way.

I found this book to be an enjoyable read for the most part. The female lead was funny, and had to champion her own life because everyone else tried to make her feel stupid, insane and less than because she was human who believed she was a dragon. Reed was a stoic jerk most of the time but always managed to save Carolyn from the kidnappers/murderers/rapist…
The ending was a little short? A quick conversation and oh, btw, now she’s a dragon.
The mindset of all the male dragons is a little creepy but hey, if you can overlook forced breeding for all the riches you desire, oh well.
The plot was entertaining, and an enjoyable lighthearted read. There were several grammatical errors and several paragraphs repeated but overall I enjoyed it.
