No menköön neljäskin tähti, jos ei muusta niin positiivisesta ylläristä.
Myönnän, että olin aluksi hiukan ennakkoluuloinen, sillä scifi ei ole ykkössuosikkigenreni ja kun avasin kirjan fonttikin oli epätavallisen isoa. Mietin heti, että mitä ihmeen selkoa, kenelleköhän tämä nyt oikein on tarkoitettu...
Mutta iloinen yllätys, kirjahan oli ihan näppärä. Poikkeuksellisen lahjakkaat hakkeripojat ystävystyvät ja parissa viikossa vilkkaampi houkuttelee nörtimmän paheen teille rehtoria jekuttamaan. Salaperäinen JOKU on kuitenkin kuvannut poikien tekoset ja koska lakia on rikottu useammallakin tavalla, yliälykkäät pojat päätetään laittaa "rangaistukseksi" tietotekniikkaan ja koodaukseen erikoistuneeseen kouluun, johon pääsevät vain parhaista parhaat. Koulu sijaitsee Bondpahistukikohtien tyyliin maan alla autiolla saarella ja siellä opettavat vain alansa huiput. Aluksi kaikki vaikuttaa loistavalta, lähtötasokoe osoittaa pojat huipputaitaviksi ja he saavat opettajakseen koodari-idolinsa. Koulua kuitenkin valvotaan tarkoin, netin käyttö on kielletty ja ulkomaailmaan saa olla yhteydessä vain kerran viikossa lankapuhelimella. Jonkin ajan kuluttua pojat alkavat nähdä outoja väkivaltaisia unia ja heidän älylaitteisiinsa hakkeroidaan outoja viestejä. Kadonnut aivokirurgi- isä, japanilainen koodarityttö, helikopterilla kulkevat kommandojoukot, lapsineroja yhdistävät vakavat lapsuuden onnettomuudet, ajatuksen voimalla koodaaminen, pako arktisessa lumimyrskyssä...
Loppua kohti tarina pääsee kunnolla vauhtiin ja kakkososaa jää kyllä odottamaan.
Kirja on aiheestaan huolimatta helposti ymmärrettävä ja pysyi tieteellisissä ja tietoteknisissä termeissä perustasolla (tätikin selviytyi). Vaikka fontti oli isohkoa ja tarina selkeä ja nopealukuinen, lukijaa ei kuitenkaan aliarvioitu liialla selittämisellä tai "kulmien pyöristelyllä".
Kirja sopii varmaan parhaiten neloskutosille, mutta ikäsuosituksesta voi hyvin joustaa pari vuotta kumpaankin suuntaan lukutaidon ja lukijan mielenkiinnon mukaan. Nuorempi "hyvä" lukija selviää tästä kyllä ja seiska-kasin heikko lukijakaan ei ehkä tunne itseään ihan aliarvioiduksi. Kepler62:n lukijat vois tykätä tästä.
Uskon, että tässä olisi potentiaalia vitosten seuraavaksi vinkkaushitiksi. Ainakin alustava kotikenttäkokemus lupasi hyvää; kerroin kirjasta ohimennen tilapäisestä lukuhaluttomuudesta kärsivälle teinijaostolle ja molemmat ilmoittivat saman tien haluavansa lukea kirjan.

MY THOUGHTS:
I received this book in exchange for my honest review.
When I received this book, I had no idea what to expect.
The book took me one night to read, a couple of hours of my time and I flipped through each paid rapidly wanting more.
This is a strong character driven, well-plotted story involving young teens. I know some may think that the characters are too young for this type of story, but let’s face it, folks, teens today are not developing as slowly as say, ten years ago. With technology moving forward as quickly as it seems to be, it’s only a natural progression for teens today to move with it.
With that said, this group of teens is remarkably developed, well-fleshed out and very realistically flawed. The idea of a super-brain in a hormonal teenage body is a bit daunting but such is as it is.
I enjoyed the ride. I did like the world-building but would have loved seeing more once the setting switched to outside. The beginning moved slow, then quickly gained momentum as the middle loomed ahead. As more and more unfolded and tension continued to build, I was drawn into the backstory of each character and it’s there, that I found information lacking. It would have been nice to see more of the Antagonist and secondary characters developed and linked to the Antagonist laid out a bit more in detail. I suppose it’s a struggle not to give too much away in doing so, but there just was something not complete at this point. It felt like there was a hole where there shouldn’t have been..
The premise is wild and fantastic. The pacing is done well and keeps the reader engaged. A couple of spots, I fell off the ride but managed to pick it up again without losing interest. Overall, I can see teens enjoying this book, and perhaps, wondering at the plausibility of the situations the book teens find themselves in. In my opinion, this is a fantasy/sci fi cross-over, something that is becoming more and more prevalent in both genres today.

On face value, The Ghost Network sounds cool - 12 year old hackers who come together at a secret school, but it starts off on such an inconceivable spot that the whole story is called into question. Sure, kids are getting smarter, and there are young hackers out there, but hacking security doors at the grocery store to harass the school principal is a bit out there. Many of the book's events would be more believable if the characters were not so young. I can see some of the book's appeal, but not to a general audience. This is not a book that makes me want to read the next installment.

Vinkattavaksi Kepler62:sta tykänneille. Ehkä vitosluokasta ylöspäin jonnekin kasiluokkaan asti, riippuen vähän millainen lukija. On vaativampi kuin Kepler62. Superkoodareita, nanoteknologiaa, hakkerointia, palvelunestohyökkäyksiä, iiristunnisteita... Loppupuolella meno muuttuu jännärimäiseksi takaa-ajojutuksi, eli viehättänee seikkailun ystäviäkin. En itse tästä ihan hirveästi saanut irti ja vähän pelottaa, että kohta en muista mitään yksityiskohtia juonesta, mikä tekee kirjan vinkkaamisesta vaikeaa. Tiedän kuitenkin, että tälle on yleisönsä, joten ihan hyvä että tällaista oman mukavuusalueen ulkopuolella olevaakin tulee luettua.

It is really sad when such a perfect concept just doesn't quite live up to expectations. Here we have such possibilities with young teens and older adolescents, who can read code and almost twist it to their will. Tthe story is good but just doesn't zing! Maybe the 2nd will lift this series into a breathtaking story of the possibilities or dangers of hacking.

Mä aika nuukasti annan lastenkirjoille viittä tähteä, sillä haluan säästellä huippupisteitä kaikista parhaimmille ja ajatuksia herättävimmille kirjoille. Tämä kuitenkin pitkän pohdinnan jälkeen saikin neljän sijasta viisi tähteä.
Kirja kertoo luonnottoman taitavista alaskalaisista hakkeriystävyksistä, jotka päätyvät Sudenpesään, eliittikouluun maailman parhaille tietotekniikan opiskelijoille, rehtorilleen tekemän pilan johdosta. Sudenpesässä heidän on tarkoitus käyttää taitojaan hyvään. Koulu vaikuttaa unelmalta ja kaikki tuntuukin sujuvan liiankin hyvin. Jotain omituista on kuitenkin tekeillä. Kaverukset joutuvat keskelle käsittämätöntä salaisuuksien vyyhtiä, joka alkaa hiljalleen aukeamaan heidän nenänsä edessä. Juonenkäänteet yllättävät kerta toisensa jälkeen. Heidän menneisyyteensä liittyy heitä yhdistävä tekijä, jota kukaan ei olisi osannut arvata. Alkaa kutkuttavan jännittävä seikkailu!
Kirja oli helppolukuinen olematta kuitenkaan liian yksinkertainen ja tönkkö, jota monet lastenkirjat tuppaavat mielestäni olemaan. Kirja sai jopa minut kunnolla otteeseensa, mistä tulee viides tähti. Tämä oli 5- ja 6-luokkien pienryhmävinkkauksessa isoin hitti, vaikka oli pisin (ja myös vaikealukuisin) vinkattavista kirjoista. Vinkkausluokan lukutaito ja -into ei opettajan mukaan ollut kovin suurta, joten kirjan suosio yllätti kovasti.

Muutama yllärikäännös, kunnon ryhmäytys lähes päähenkilöiden hengen kustannuksella, ohjelmointia ja Japania, yliluonnollisen taitavaa menoa huippuälykkäiden teinien koulumaailmassa. Taustalla on jatkuvasti *jotain* - kuollut isä, kummallisia sattumuksia, samoja kokemuksia, yhteisten supersankareiden tapaamista...
Lähimmäksi tätä laittaisin omassa kirjastossani Anthony Horowitzin Alex Rider-sarjan, jota vinkkasin suht menestyksekkäästi aikoinaan ja rakastin varmaan enemmän kuin kohderyhmä. (Oih, kaltereita sulattava finnivoide <3)

Mielenkiintoinen aihe, mutta omaan makuun turhan kliseiset päähenkilöt ja epäuskottava aloitus tarinalla. Kieli oli paikoin turhan ontuvaa, mikä häiritsi lukemista. Muutoin melko helppolukuiselle tarinalle voi silti olla yleisönsä. Tarina vetää ihan mukavasti kun heittäytyy vain sen vietäväksi, eikä mieti, onko tämä nyt uskottavaa vai ei :D

Täytyy myöntää, että kirjan alussa olin ihan pihalla. Paljon tapahtumia ja koodauksen liittyviä sanoja. Oli tosi vaikea pysyä kärryillä kuka teki mitäkin. Varsinkin kun luin kirjaa pätkissä. Pitäisi varmaan lukea kirja toisen kerran uudestaan niin ehkä se olisi selkeämpi.
Loppua kohden kirja muuttui jännnittävämmäksi ja jännittävämmäksi ja imaisi toden teolla mukaansa! Jotkut asiat saivat selityksen ja toiset eivät. Ja mikä lopetus! Jäin kaipaamaan jatkoa!
Voisin vinkata tätä vitos-kutosille. Taitaa kuitenkin olla melko kapean lukijakunnan kirja. Melko paljon tekstiä ja osin melko sekava kirja. Suosittelen hyvälle lukijalle ja erityisesti nörttipojille ja -tytöille. Osalle Kepler62-sarjan lukijoista tämä on varmasti liian haastava, mutta toiset voisivat tykätä. Yhtä jännittävä tämä on!

I found this book on audio at a discount and was pleasantly surprised. I would not have picked it up on my own simply because reading about a group of young teen hackers is not my thing. But it was really well done and not too technical for a middle-aged English major like me. The pacing was great as our heroes get deeper and deeper into trouble. It's very visual—I can see it as a summer movie.
Stay away from reading the description, which gives too much away. The clues are all there in the narrative, and part of the fun is untangling this mystery along with our heroes.

Ghost Network was overall a good book! It has a plot, some mystery and action and character development. I might have gotten lost in one or two parts (it might have just been me) but it was still fun to read! Admittedly, its not my favorite book, but it's still pretty good. (though this book might not go with some peoples taste in books)

Ootin tän lukemistä jostain syystä hirveesti. Se oli erillainen kuin odotin. Jotenkin kuvittelin aluksi että tässä on agenttikoulu ei hakkerikoulu🙈. Mut tykkäsin. En rakastanut kuten odotin, mutta pidin kyllä tosi paljon.
Helmet lukuhaaste 20. Kirjassa on ammatti, jota ei enää ole, tai joka on harvinainen (luokittelen hakkeroinnin opettajan ja helikopterin kuskin harvinaisiksi ammateiksi :D)

I read a lot of heavy books and this was a nice change, quick and interesting read. I like the way YA is going over the last few years and plan to continue to seek out books like this.

Akane, Salome, John, and Slack are all hackers with one other thing in common: they were brought back to life after a traumatic accident when they were young. In each case the doctor implanted something in their brain, giving them their special computing abilities. Now 3 of them are being taken to a special school called Wolf's Den where they are promised to receive more specialized training. However, things that sound too good to be true should be viewed with caution - and that is definitely the case here.

A very underrated middle grade!! Don't read the description because it spoils what's supposed to be a HUGE plot twist in the story.
The Ghost Network follows four friends at an Alaskan boarding school for kids excelling in technology. Something weird is going on, and what they discover will change their lives forever!! The tone is very thriller like, and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. This is a very plot driven story, with really smart characters and fun world building.
There's a lot of potential for the series; I hope the author adds a little more depth to the main and side characters in the future books.

An enjoyable high tech romp, so long as you leaves your credulity at the door. The story starts with a completely unbelievable premise to send the students to the wolf den, and the descriptions of hacking seem unrealistic. However the basic premise of what is really going on is interesting... Although you will need to wait to read further books to find out.

Ei lainkaan hassumpi kirja. Vaikea tosin ajatella että päähenkilöt olisivat 13-vuotiaita. Juoni meni eteenpäin ja henkilöt toimivat. Mitään maatamullistavaa taidetta ei kirja tarjoa, mutta en sellaista tästä kirjasta etsinytkään. Vinkkauskirja, ehdottomasti.

Neljäs tähti ihanasta fontista, tai sen suuruudesta. Toimii. Ei ehkä mulle, mutta viiteryhmälle. Ainakin niin luulen. Ja aihe hyvä, koska niitä dystooppisia maailmantuhoja tuntuu mun paketissa olevan joka toinen.

I read this in one sitting and still felt like I couldn't read it fast enough. This book had me on the edge excited for every page and to see how things would pan out for these amazing characters. I will be waiting with bated breath for the next installment in the Ghost Network!!

Varmasti ikäluokan suosikki, mutta itse en melkein jaksanut loppuun asti. Hämäännyin jopa perhe Laineen nimestä ihan turhaan. Silti pointsit fontista ja aiheesta, vaikka itselle ei iskenytkään.
