In the story you follow a servant. No, the story is not set in 18th century Britain. The concept of servant is as it exists today in South Asia(read India/Pakistan).Though not literally, his thoughts may hit home. You could relate the story to how we all willingly choose lives of servitude where rewards never live up to our those expectations which we ourselves are not sure what to expect from.
