Taking a new spin on the genre, this is an enjoyable Urban Fantasy book suitable for readers of various ages. Situated in a world where magic became accepted, commercialized, and in the way of so many things, reserved for those with money, we follow Eli whose colleagues turned on him for insisting magic be used to help people - regardless of their cash flow. A charmingly witty and delightfully engaging alternative-near future urban fantasy, this first in a new series by a prolific author of both ...more

If you love magic then you should read Discarded! It takes us into a world full of magic, where it's used in every day life. Our main character Eli, whom was a partner to Thoth Corps, is homeless and is struggling to rebuild his life. He is saved but at a cost. Eli is thrown in between his old company and a shadow war waged against humanity.
To stop the war, Eli needs to find a way to make magic out of garbage.
In conclusion, I really liked the story. It was great and I would recommend to my magi

Wow! From the moment I opened this Science Fiction book, I found myself, intrigued and could not take my eyes away. With each page, I became entranced, I could not wait to find out what was to come. The idea that someone who has lost it all, who is living homeless could be the key to saving a world from destruction by using his architectural magic abilities using trash to change it all is simply mind-blowing. This was a wonderfully charming, witty, and mind opening read and I can't wait to read ...more

A main character you won't soon forget.
The series title, "Dumpstermancer," alone was enough to make me want to read this e-book. I half expected a comedy, but wasn't sure. I was intrigued, to say the least.
In a world where you can have a gourmet meal kit delivered, corporate magic seems like the next logical step. Mistakes happen, and the Glamour spell from Thoth is not exempt.
Eli is an engaging character. I'm not sure if I like him, but I definitely won't forget him anytime soon. A homeless ex-

Recently released from the prison of Wasteland on a trumped-up sham conviction, Elias (Eli) Graham is thrust onto the streets in a perilous future with nothing to his name...a name which was once attached to an illustrious career and a fat bank account. But that's all gone now. "This is my life now. Survive first, be picky later." As he navigates his way through homelessness and scrounges what he can to eat out of dumpsters (and occasional charity), his former protege, Darrin Silus, is on the hu ...more

I received this complimentary book in exchange for an honest review.

Discarded by Michael J. Allen follows Darrin, a freshly-released criminal, as he attempts to reassimilate to a society fraught with magic with the most mundane of uses. Having sworn to lay off magic after it landed him in the Wasteland for a century, Darrin is conflicted when people from his past and present start reaching out to him for help, help that would require him to use magic once more. Should he do what he feels is righ

This is an interesting story of magic and fantasy. A man full of magic who once had it all until betrayal and greed took it all away. After years of imprisonment he returns to a different world. A world where he is considered the criminal. Yet those with true magic seek him out for help. No matter how much he longs to be left alone it seems that magic will always find him. Eli soon finds himself fighting for magic and making friends even when he does not want to. Someone must right the wrongs of ...more

Review: DISCARDED by Michael J. Allen
(DUMPSTERMANCER BOOK 1)

A charmingly witty and delightfully engaging alternative-near future urban fantasy, this first in a
new series by a prolific author of both science fiction and fantasy is set in the Pacific Northwest, in a time of commonplace magic. Not common due to talent, but common because corporations subsume technology welded to magic, at a cost designed to make it accessible, while wielding ridiculously inflated profits. From the corporate standpo

Discarded tells the story of a genius magician who once was living in the limelight. After having a falling out with his companions, he's thrust in prison and tortured before being discarded back into city life. Eli, our genius magician, has wit, character, and humor. He cares about nothing except for the good of humanity, however, at every corner he turns and every person he tries to assist there seems to be something sinister lurking behind the curtain. Eli is so full of bad luck and misfortun ...more

What happens when you take something like magic and turn it into something that can be bought and paid for without any regard for who has it? The world in this book. Eli is forced to hide what he once saw as something that could change the world for the better and help all people regardless of their ability to pay. This way of thinking landed him homeless and trying to rebuild his life. Eli is easy to root for and to believe in. The reading moves at a fairly fast pace and is appropriate for a wi ...more

Goodness! From the minute I opened this Science Fiction book, I got myself, captivated and couldn't take my eyes away. With each page, I wound up enchanted, I couldn't endure to discover what was to come. The possibility that somebody who has lost everything, who is living destitute could be the way to sparing a world from annihilation by utilizing his structural enchantment capacities utilizing junk to transform everything is just amazing. This was a superbly beguiling, clever, and mind opening ...more

Discarded takes us into the future world of magic. One where it is a common, everyday thing...that gets used for the bad, by certain people. That will happen. Our hero, is down on his luck, thanks to the same evil doers. this is a great lesson in getting kicked down, then getting yourself back up again. I am glad this seems to be a series. I want more, as usual with this author's books. This one is well written, to keep you interested to the end. Real life lessons are all over in this fantasy/th ...more

So many great ideas but the tale is a real downer

It's hard to like or identify with a whiny hero who keeps stubbornly doing stupid things.
The dichotomy between the hero's talent and his stubbornly helpless approach to life did not make sense.

I tried to press on but I gave up after about 100 pages. It is a pity, because a good editor might have been able to save this book. The hero is so flawed that he ruined the reading experience.

This book was a pretty slow starter, and it didn't really pick up anywhere along the line. It was pretty boring. We start off with a magician by the name of Darrin who is trying to perfect a spell to make people beautiful and it isn't working out for him. He wants to seek the assistance of Eli, whom we will meet in the next chapter, a former co-worker of his at Thoth Corp who was sent to prison on bogus charges. The characters are pretty bland, like other books I've read by the author.

This is my honest and unbias opinion of the story. This was a great read, I never read anything from this author before. I am so glad I took the chance cause I loved this book. It has a lot of twist and turns threw the whole story. I am hooked and I want to read more from this author and this series please.

wonderful book full of sifi suspense and mystery. The main character in the book will grab you and keep you in his grips from the first pages to the very last not usually a fan of this genre but this book has changed my mind. I advise you to pick up your own copy sit down with a blanket and your fav. beverage and get comfy because you won't want to put it down.

I was pleasantly surprised with how engaging this book was. I enjoy reading the occasional science fiction/fantasy book and am enamored with anything having to do with magic so I thought I'd give this book a summer read. The only complaint I have is that I couldn't put it down and read it much faster than I anticipated. I can't wait for the series to continue.

Very interesting read, keeps you engaged to read more just to see what happens! I'm not much on reading and I actually finished this book.
I would recommend this to other fantasy/fiction readers looking for a grab you, pull you in, kind of book!

What a book. Magic is being sold everywhere like coffee. But it’s dangerous, it’s murdering people. Couldn’t finish it fast enough to learn the end.

What a great first story

Quite an inventive world, mixing tech and magic, homelessness and big business, convicts and evangelical people. Can't wait to see what happens next.

Michael J. Allen is a bestselling author of multi-layer science fiction and fantasy novels. Born in Oregon and an avid storm fan, he lives in far too hot & humid rural Georgia with his two black Labradors: Myth and Magesty. On those rare occasions he tears himself away from reading, writing and conventions he can be found enjoying bad scifi movies, playing D&D or the occasional video game, ...more
