Joanne Bischof does it again! There are tons of authors I like and many I love...but Joanne Bischof is consistently at the suuuuuuper love, top-of-the-list, all-time-fave level. And I absolutely adored this continuation of Thor, Aven and Haakon's story.

In a way, this book reminded me of Joanne's earlier series—the Cadence of Grace series—in that the hero is flawed in an obvious way. All the best characters have flaws, I think, but man, I so admire an author who can write a character with much m

'If God would but grant him another mercy. Should the outcome be dire, he prayed that God would welcome him to peace.'

Oh my. Joanne Bischof never fails to move me deeply with her books. She writes what I like to call heart-deep books. Stories so full and rich that my heart is totally involved.

We first fell in love with Aven and Thor in Sons of Blackbird Mountain and four years have passed and we find them here, married and wonderfully happy and blessedly awaiting the birth of their first child.

I was intrigued about the journey I'd be taken through and how forgiveness and redemption would be won out and how many tears I would shed. I was also very much intrigued by the title of this book and wondered what a role it played.

For those who read the first book, we know forgiveness and redemption are key factors in this current season of the Norga

Can this story not be finished? I want it to keep going.

As always, Joanne Bischof blew me away and captured my heart with her characters. Sometimes her books lean a little too sappy for my tastes, but with most of the main characters already married and redemption (not wooing) holding center stage, I really don't have any complaints to voice.

Aven and Thor are the cutest as a married couple. Haakon's (Hogan) character arc is an intricately woven journey of pain, regret, humility, and courage. Pet

It was such a pleasure to return to the Norgaard family in Daughters of Northern Shores, the second book of the Sons of Blackbird Mountain series. I fell in love with Thor, Haakon and Jorgan, their close friends and the women they love in that first book. My heart had also broken a little with the tearing of both friendship, trust and brotherly bonds, so it was with relief that I could continue this wonderful story, return to this little group - some now married, others with children and more on ...more

aaaaAAAAHHHH I was so excited to have read this book! I love Joanne’s books- they’re so full of redemption and truth and humor and the romances are completely on point. 😀 A couple of months ago I read Sons of Blackbird Mountain, and I… didn’t love it because Haakon kind of ruined it for me. In short, his character felt sickening and disgusting to me, and after finishing the book I felt dirty from reading about him. That being said, I did enjoy reading the book overall and that made me intrigued ...more

Thanks to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson-FICTION for a digital galley in exchange for an honest review.

Although I was not familiar with the author or with this series, I found that it was very clear what was happening to all the characters. Daughters of Northern Shores is a Christian historical romance that centres on three estranged Norwegian brothers living in Virgina in the 19th century. Well, the youngest brother, Hakkon, is working on a ship while his two brothers, Jorgan and Thor, are o

We continue Haakon's journey (kind of like an odyssey!) as he really begins to settle in his spirit in this book 2 of the series. Revenge, resolution, and acceptance are themes in this story of the Norgaard brothers. Loved the touches of Viking lore! A satisfying resolution to this 2-book series! Thanks to the publisher for an early reader copy.

Daughters of Northern Shores is another outstanding epic by Joanne Bischof, one for my “best of the best” list, and impossible for me to adequately review with any words of mine. This novel is filled with exquisite romance, emotion, poignancy, suspense and adventure. Anything that Bischof writes is excellent, but for me, she shines best in Appalachian settings. My ancestors lived in the southern foothills of the Appalachians, so I’m well acqu

Y'all! This book! I can't even think of the words to describe how I feel right now. This book is amazing. I love those Norgaard men! If I could be any fictional character, it would be Aven. Why? Thor! Swoon! I love these characters. This book with the back drop of the Appalachian mountains in 1895 has romance, action and a beautiful story of redemption. I loved Sons of Blackbird Mountain and I love this book too. I don't know if there will be any more after this book, but I certainly hope so. Th ...more

This story of a prodigal's journey home is told in the way only Joanne Bischof can. Her distinctive style continues to delight and entrance her fans, and her sensitivity in handling her deaf character is truly admirable. Be sure to read the Author's Note at the back of the book for the story behind the story.

Joanne has done it again! Daughters of the Northern Shores was everything I was hoping it would be and more. The characters were raw and real, the bond of brotherhood was inspiring, the themes of grace and forgiveness were beautiful, and the deep trust they all had in God through their trials is something I hope to have.

I also really enjoyed reading from Haakon’s point of view throughout the story and reading about his journey, both spiritually and physically. Overall, this book was absolutely a

Daughters of Northern Shores was a beautiful, captivating tale that, once again, reminded me of how much I love the characters from this series. I do highly recommend reading Sons of Blackbird Mountain before beginning this book.

The drastic change that has taken place in Haakon and the depth of the forgiveness he is seeking is clear when both stories are read in order. Other situations that occurred in book one have repurcussions, as well, in Daughters of Northern Shores. Both stories weave toge

OH. MY. GOODNESS. Combined with book one, this should be a movie. Daughters of Northern Shores brings Joanne Bischof's characters from Sons of Blackbird Mountain full circle. As angry and broken-hearted as we all got with Haakon's behavior in book one, we are slowly gifted with the insight of his back story in book two, and we watch his progression into spiritual and personal maturity in this remarkable story of redemption and grace. Joanne has just rocketed to the top of my favorite authors lis ...more

Did you ever read a book that just feels like a mountain wind swept right through your soul and deposited hope there? That's what this book is. A stunningly written sequel to Sons of Blackbird Mountain, it takes up the threads from book one and weaves them with grit and beauty into the next chapter of the Norgaard brothers' lives. Joanne Bischof uses her gift of storytelling to venture into terrain that is both honest and hope-giving, both raw and redemptive. It is a tale of healing, growth, hea ...more

I have come to expect a story from the pen of Joanne Bischof to be one that slices straight to the heart with its truth and tenderness. Daughters of Northern Shores is no exception. With its return of beloved characters and a message of trust at its center, it is one I will cherish upon recalling (and REREADING!).

With a balance of poignancy and vivid life, the story unfolds as one tentatively hopeful yet confronting pain, broken trust, trials, and jealousies of life. The rift left unsettled at t

I was so eager to get this book, and it did not at all disappoint. Beautifully written story with characters that become family. I just love Aven and Thor, especially. The writing itself takes you away to a different time and place, the characters jump off the page, and the entire book evokes so much emotion. Another book by this author that is incredibly well done! Highly recommend this read.. delightful, alluring, and so much more!

I have been waiting for this book with much anticipation! It's book two in this series and you really need to read the first book (Sons of Blackbird Mountain) to appreciate this one. Joanne Bischof has such an incredible ability to draw me right into her stories and feel as if I am actually there. All of my senses become alert and aware. It's nuts. In the best of ways. Her characters feel solid, real. They pull on my emotions.

Be still my heart and let me take a few deep breaths! Wow! In her beautiful prose, masterful author Joanne Bischof has done it again—penned another powerfully haunting, emotive read set in rural Appalachia.

Since this novel is the sequel to 'Sons of Blackbird Mountain', I must take care to avoid spoilers. Once again we are reunited with the lovely, compassionate Aven, who won the heart of tough, handsome Thor, a deaf mute with a heart of gold—a man who ends up fighting a battle much graver than h

I was so happy to return to Blackbird Mountain and the haven where Thor and Aven share such a tender and devoted love. Life isn't perfect there- it's full of peril with the Sorrels threatening trouble again and a mysterious sickness weakening Thor. I was glad that the story alternated to Haaken's point of view as well, seeing his journey of redemption as his regrets compel him to return home after four years to make amends. The writing is beautiful and evocative, not flowery, but gently and subt ...more

I was so glad that I was able to visit Blackbird Mountain through this beautifully written sequel. In my opinion, one needs to read the Sons of Blackbird Mountain first to fully appreciate this stirring tale.

Bischof never fails to deliver an emotionally charged tale of characters that are broken, yet find strength in God and those they love. This is a story of the unbreakable bonds of family, told from the viewpoint of three characters: Thor, Aven and Haakon. In Daughters of Northern Shores, th

Continuing the saga of the Norgaard family, Joanne Bischof’s Daughters of Northern Shores beautifully transports readers into historic Appalachia once again. It may not always be an easy story to experience, but it is worth the read.

Daughters of Northern Shores is the sequel Sons of Blackbird Mountain (a book I LOVED!) and it was a good read. While I did enjoy the story, I just wish it had more of Haakon's story…there wasn't enough of his time spent away.

I loved the characters. I really felt for Thor because of what happened to him in this book (won't say what) and it was emotional at times. Aven was a great character, yet again.

All in all, Daughters of Northern Shores was an enjoyable read. I loved the first book a little

I was honored to have the opportunity to read this book before its release. And boy, if I thought the first book was amazing, this one really exceeded my expectations.

“Daughters of Northern Shores” picks up 4 years after the end of “Sons of Blackbird Mountain”. We learn that much has been changing in the lives of Aven, Thor and the rest of the Norgaard family, especially with Haakan, who has been at sea. Each of their hearts went under much refining as the story unfolded.

I adore the gentle lyricism of Joanne Bischof’s writing, and Thor and Aven stitched themselves firmly into the fabric of my character-loving heart in Sons of Blackbird Mountain, but I have been anticipating Daughters of Northern Shores with equal parts longing and trepidation. Longing, because I dearly wanted to see more of this Norgaard family—particularly the resolution of some of the situations that arose during the first book. Trepidation, because I was nervous about what might be coming.
