1. N/A
2. Appropriate for grades K-2.
3. This book details the life story of George Washington from birth all the way through the end of his presidency. This book included all the main events such as his birth, his childhood with his siblings, his job as a land surveyor, his career in the army, and the events that led to his presidency as the first president of America.
4. This book is well written as a biography rather than just facts. It almost tells his life as a story rather than facts which is easier for children to comprehend and stay focused.
5. This would be a great book to use for social studies in the classroom or for a mini research project on a president.

Genre: Biography
George Washington: Our First President is a biography about the United States first president George Washington. One unique feature about this text is that it tells us about Washington's life from the very beginning. This allows children to not only see what his life was like while in presidency, but even before he was famous. I enjoyed learning new things about George Washington while reading it, and I think students would too. It is simply laid-out.
I would recommend this book for lower elementary, specifically 2nd-3rd grades.

George Washington is a historical figure in everyone’s lives. Children are especially drawn to him as for he was the first president and they tend to learn about him before any other president. This book goes in chronological order through George Washington’s life. It starts out with his birth, goes on to his childhood and his teenage years, then onto his adulthood and his life as president.

This book has a stamp on the first stating that it is a level 2 reading book. There is a checklist stating that a level 2 reading book is for children in kindergarten to grade 2. This book is classified as a
“Hello Reader” book, which says that it helps parents read to children, helps children read to parents, and it’s for children to read to themselves. Parents can pick up this book for their children and see if the reading level is too hard or too easy for their child. The “Hello Reader” chart stands to be very helpful.

This book is easy for anyone to follow along and read along with. On each page, there is only a paragraph to read so a child will not feel overwhelmed reading too many words. Also, on each page there are pictures that move along with the text. When George Washington is born, the picture shows his mother holding him as a baby, or when he is being inaugurated, you see the people in the pictures cheering for their new president. The illustrators used great drawings that were colored in colored pencils and they contained a great amount of details. You see the time period change in each picture. You can see what the people were looking like the years of 1732 and beyond. Children will have these images in their heads whenever they think of President George Washington.

This biography on George Washington is very factual. It doesn’t have stories that you would never know if they were true or not. This book contains dates, years, actual names of people, and tells of the many events that happened throughout George Washington’s life. The only theme of the book is just about how life went for our first president. Since it is a biography, there is no plot or made up characters to watch. The characters are George Washington and all the many people that were in his life. Children will take this book inside their heads and remember every little detail about the life of our first president.
