Boyle Heights #3

NINE: Boyle Heights

Rate this book
After years of gravitating to douchebag players with no more to offer than a wildly good time and zero promises, single mom Drew has graduated to dating a real man. He's the responsible, mature kind—willing and able. To offer her and her daughter a real future.

Then along comes Nine.

More like a ten, is her first thought when introduced to the tatted-up, foul-mouthed, unapologetic player. The guy might've been her kryptonite five years ago.

But she has a child to think about now.

With every new encounter she has with Nine, she begins to realize there's so much more to him than just good looks and his bad boy image. She sees a vulnerability in him she never expected. Worse yet, he's sending out vibes that whisper of promises he's never made to any girl before.

Is she willing to trade in Mr. Perfect for someone who's one impetuous decision away from proving that her first impression may have been heartbreakingly spot on?

2.5 - "You're the kind of guy I used to be always be into... until I grew up." Stars.

I have been dying too read this book since the end of Beast, my low rating isn't due to my expectations being met in regards to writing quality, but the story-line itself. I am sure all authors when putting their work out there for others to read and judge are hoping to illicit a reaction from a reader, unfortunately on this occasion all my reactions fall pretty much on the negative side of the scale.

I can sum up this book in three lines I highlighted from it -

The first 65% - Bottom line... she was unavailable.

The next 20% - He finally knew what all the fuss was about... No matter what, there was no turning back for him now.

The final 15% (minus the epilogue) - "Why don't you just ask him?"

I am not going to write a lengthy essay about everything that annoyed me, It was mainly the final 15% to be honest, but I just felt let down after wading through the first half of the book where Nine and Drew were basically like ships passing in the night, we are talking months passing between their interactions at points, and while I understood the reasoning (hence the continued reading) I just don't think there was enough of a real emotional connection established between them at those meetings for the final 35% to balance it all out.

"Don't be a stranger."

I did like Nine, as with the previous guys, all-man, all alpha, and although initially all-over-anything with a pussy, he was generally a soft centered marshmallow where Drew and her daughter Chelsea were concerned.

He was everything she vowed to steer clear from...

Not often I post spoilers, but this is a story that has a lot of things in it that some readers find annoying, and general reading no-no's, so I am doing this to save further negative reviews from readers who will not like the content

Not a winner for me, purely due to the story-line. I am still looking forward to Orlando's book, and after reading the snippet at the back of this one, I think the tropes are likely to be a bit more agreeable to the ones used in Nine

ARC generously provided by the author, I am sorry I cannot provide a more positive review on this occasion.

🔥🔥🔥SUPER HOT 🔥🔥🔥

Drew and Nine story was electrifying, I can just feel all those sparks every time they come together. I love Nine's cocky, playful, sexy personality 😍😍 and even though Drew and Nine are total opposite, they're very attracted to each other. But they have many obstacles that they need to over come and communication is one of them. This was an amazing and captivating story so if you have NOT read it, so it NOW.. 💖😍

I really love Elizabeth Reyes’ writing. I always love her characters and their stories. Nine and Drew were no different. I loved their connection and chemistry, even though they both fought it for their own reasons. I liked how things built slowly with them. He was deliciously alpha, and I loved every possessive bone in his body....just like all of Elizabeth’s heroes. Loving this series and all the amazing characters. Can’t wait for Orlando’s story next.

I found this next book in the Boyle Heights Series to a good slow burn.

Drew thought she was on her way to happiness, now if she and Brad could just settle on a home and take the next steps. That is hard when he is away more than he is home. A single mom to a sweet girl, Drew has new priorities in life. She has an instant attraction to the Bad Boy Alpha friend of her besties soon to be husband. But she knows better than to go there again, she has to think about Chelsea.

Nine is loving life right now. Always finding it easy to spend time with the ladies. Excited about starting up a business with his boys and making something more for himself. After spending a bad night with Drew he finds himself rethinking his lack of commitment with a woman.

Is Brad really the right one for her? Can a player change his spots for the right woman? Is there a possibility of finding everything they have always wanted?

It took a little bit more build up to start to get to the meat of the story but I enjoyed it just the same. Looking forward to Orlando's story.

Review based on my opinion of an advanced copy.

A story that gave it’s leading lady not only a lot to think about but also a handsome incentive to make the right decision!
Single mother Drew thought she had her future mapped out but all that changed when her bestie introduced the delicious Nine into her life.
Nine was everything, Drew shouldn’t want but that didn’t mean that the attraction wasn’t instantaneous… with a daughter to think about and an existing relationship that was withering, Nine was a complication that she hadn’t anticipated and that was a feeling that was very much reciprocated because when it came to life and moreover women in his life, the last thing that the sexy as sin Nine was looking for was a relationship.
But one night…that is all it takes to have in looking for ways to prove to Drew that he can be the guy she needs. The question was whether she was willing to finally call time on a relationship that was doing little more than treading water to embark on something with Nine, the guy that gave real meaning to bad boy alpha!
But this was a guy that was more than met the eye because under that tough exterior was a heart of gold. Would she give him the chance to show that she was his more? His reason to change his ways.
As you would expect their relationship wasn’t one that just fell neatly into place, there was angst and attitude that followed them as their path unfolded.
I enjoyed the inner conflict that the author added into the story, the fact that Drew had more to contend with than just her emotions, she had her conscience to battle. Decisions are made that have ramifications for everyone involved and at the heart of everything she did was a little girl that consumed her every thought…I liked this because it is true to life because it is something that every parent has to consider when bringing someone new into a child’s life and changing what is their norm!
A beautifully narrative that was delivered with a sense of honesty and with beautifully descriptive tones. Congratulations Ms Reyes on a super story

Nine is part of the Boyle Heights series, but each book can be read as a standalone and I do truly mean this as this is my first book in this series and I started right here, with Mr. Nine himself. Love the way he got his nickname, though I agree with Drew he is more like a ten. Settling for Mr. Perfect isn’t always your best option when you are trying to be responsible for your daughter and future. I loved the way reality lingo was used to speak around the little one, it was quite laughable. I truly did want to shake Tad a little and just wanted to say, “here’s the sign, wake up!” Zion is the chosen one! Haha Rudy may have been a bad boy, but his heart was full of gold and those scenes with the littles was so heartfelt. Phoenix is a story I’d love to see more on and oh maybe a trip to Orlando is on the horizon. Drew loved her and how she was as a co-parent with her daughter.

This book covered so many topics (sensitive to some and eye opening to others) and I loved the moms and dads (can’t forget them) and it was hilarious to see how society views others (Nine’s comments). Let me rephrase this, on some things others not so funny and quite sad really and kinda broke my heart, but it’s portrayed to how society is and hopefully down the road this will be acceptable. Love the person on the inside not on the outside! I could not agree more with Nine on his statements and trust me I did not take offense to any of them and I am both of these things (couldn’t think of a better noun). I will leave this vague as this to avoid spoilers. Loved seeing that while we see secondary characters from Boyle Heights or 5th Street that you are never felt like you are missing any piece of these characters in this story. I highly recommend this book to anyone enjoys wine and reading these types of stories. It is truly an eye opener all around for so many!

Original review: A Novel Glimpse

Note: This review is for an ARC and is my unbiased opinion.

After having spent a little bit of time with Nine and Drew in Beast, I was excited to read their book. Nine was everything I was expecting it to be. It was classic Elizabeth Reyes. It had her signature alpha male and strong female with a plot that kept me reading.

Nine was the typical single man who wasn’t looking for commitment…until he met Drew. She was his game changer. He didn’t know how to show her he was willing to change his ways for her, but Nine was going to do everything he could to convince her. I loved what softie he was under his tough exterior.

Drew was a woman whose heart and mind were at war. She thought she knew what she needed and wanted, but Nine threw a wrench in her plans. I loved her relationship with her daughter and her ex. It was so sweet. I also loved how her attraction to Nine questioned her beliefs.

Nine and Drew’s journey to love wasn’t simple. It was filled with real life situations and problems. I really enjoyed how their story unraveled. If you’re a fan of the Boyle Heights series, you’re going to love seeing Nine and Drew give in to their temptations.

Nine was a lot funnier than I was expecting, and I loved it.

Beast was quite serious and heavy, so Nine was very refreshing. Literally lough out loud moments with this one.

Nine is exactly Drew's type, so that's why she knows she should stay away from him. Though her protests are half-hearted, and her actions contradict her words.

The more time these two spend together, the harder it becomes for Drew to deny that maybe this time she should go for it.

While Nine usually doesn't go for the serious things, Drew has wormed her way inside, and he doesn't want to let go.

I love Nine, in no way is he perfect, and he makes mistakes, but he learns from them, and is willing to really go for it.

In the beginning I understand Drew's hesitation, though after a while Nine truly shows what he's made of, and it pretty much becomes impossible to deny him.

A wonderful, refreshing addition to the Boyle Heights series. Probably my favorite so far.

Nine and Drew are opposites and although there’s an attraction, they won’t ever happen, Drew has standards since having a kid and having to grow up, although Nine was exactly what she would have gone for she can’t now, she’s in a relationship.
Nine and Drew continue to see each other due to wedding commitments, Drew starts to see a different side to Nine, and Nine sees how easy it is to talk to Drew.
Things start to change between Nine and Drew with both denying that it’s anything more than friendship and she has a fiancé, but, finds herself lying to him about Nine, although everyone can see the chemistry between them.
After talking with her mother, Drew sees things more clearly, Nine, realises what people were saying was true, there is something with him and Drew, but he just hopes that he’s not to late and she’s willing to give him a chance. With Nine getting Drew to admit they have a connection, and, prepared to be casual till she’s ready for more and Drew’s friend making her see things can Drew ever admit that what she feels for Nine is more.

Elizabeth Reyes is one of my favourite authors. I have read three books from her 5th Street series and loved them all. Her stories are engaging, characters are well-liked and you can't help but turn pages as you read. It's almost impossible to stop reading once you start!

I have to say I didn't read the previous books in this series (all of them are standalones though) but I wanted Nine since the moment I saw it on NetGalley.

The beginning was for me confusing. Maybe it would help if I read the two books before but since I didn't, I had troubles understanding who is who because there were so many names. You kind of find out later on but it takes a couple pages to do so. I got a feeling like I was suddenly in a scene without so much as a proper beginning. It was like the story of the previous book was cut off and bam, the story continues in the third book with a completely different set of characters. This is how I felt.

Once you get a feel of the story, everything flows. You meet the characters, the side characters and how feelings started to mess with their heads. The MCs started as friends but slowly it turns into something more.

I love how they bickered, how they wanted to fight their attraction. It was a really fun read.

4.5-5 stars.

Nine is a 10!!!

This man is so confident and cocky and playful and flirty and oh man on hot piece of yumminess. I fell, fell in absolute LUST Ummm I mean LOVE, yes LOVE with Rudy, aka Nine!

The buildup was AMAZING!!! Elizabeth Reyes has me hanging on each and every one of her words!

Drew and Nine are truly a couple I can see placed on my top 10. The book is truly that good. I laughed and then I got anxious and worried, not to mention scared. I was doing the whole hand flapping thing at one part.

The story is strong, well written and the reader can't help but want more!!!

Very seldom did Drew go out and let her hair down and it turned out disastrously> While out she got a call from her daughter Chelsea was in the ER with a raging fever , then her friend Ali almost got raped and Ali’s boyfriend Beast took matters into his own hands. Than the blinding reminder of the kind of guy -Nine- she used to fall for leaning against her car. He was epitome of her weakness: a dangerously smug tattooed bad bo, she had no business thinking about what he’d be like in bed. After making sure Ali is sok he went to have a cigarette as they weren’t allowed around her daughter. Drew was very spoken for and had no business even thinking about Nine in any other way. Contrary to the rest of his bad boy image his hair was impeccably groomed and styled. She could hardly believe she’d ever been into guys like Nine. She said she wanted to stop and see her daughter one last time and Nine found it hard to believe her man wouldn’t care. He mentioned white people were like that. He was hispanic . Drew’s father-Phoenix- was gay and she didn’t say eating with Nine at almost one in the morning she didn’t believe Brad would be thrilled about. Than her car broke down. Nine refused to leave Drew until triple A showed up. When back in the car she was overwhelmed by Nine’s presence next to her and her nerve-alerting scent. Nine was curious why any guy would let a girl as hot as drew out of his sight. Drew said he was out of town on a business trip. Brad was a Sports Publicist. Drew asked Nine what his real name was and he said Rudy but few called him that. Drew said she had to remember whoever she got serious about will be part of chelsea’s life also. So Drew’s standards had risen. Drew had been very cautious. Very selective. Her requirements for a man was: she had to like their personality, she needed to like the guy. Their conversation should be entertaining. When the tow truck got there Drew asked Nine to call as soon as he something about Beast. Beast got out of the charges as the whole assault on Ali was on tape Beasts reaction to the assault on his girlfriend from a guy with a long rap sheet. Beast, Orlando-O, and Nine- who were roommates- bought an auto shop. With his career swing in boxing. Beast backed the shop financially more in the business but O and Nine would run the shop until Beast retired from boxing. Beast wanted them all to be full partners as he wouldn’t be there full time but he only planned on boxing a few years. Everytime Nine thought about drew he shook it off. He didn’t need to complicate his life. Drew and Nine may be opposites but they had a sizzling chemistry. Nine and Drew ran into each other with wedding stuff to do and attend. Drew sees a sweeter side to Nine. Nine realizes drew is easy to talk to. But they were both fighting the attraction. Things started to change for Nine and drew. But they can only be friends Drew still had Brad. But than Drew lies to Brad about Nine. Than Nine and drew have a very intimate dance at Ali’s and Beasts wedding. Drew had to decide of she would end things with Brad and take a chance on Nine. Drew than realizes her and Brad aren’t going to work out. It is so obvious to everyone what Nine and Drew share is more than friendship.
I loved this book and it was a great read. I loved how Drew brought out the good in Nine and made him want to be the best he could be for her. I loved the pace and the plot. I loved the closeness of Beast, Nine, and O. Also Ali and Drew. I also loved the relationship between Drew and Chelsea and how drew put her child first and what was best for that child. I loved how realistic I felt Drew’s character was especially as far as being a single mom and the men in her life. I loved Drew and Nine together and how they interacted together. I also loved Nine’s honesty. I felt there were realistic situations and problems in this book and how they were approached or handled. I really enjoyed Nine’s character. I loved the slow build of Nine and drew’s relationship than to more. Sometimes I choked up when reading this book. I loved the characters and the ins and out of this book and I highly recommend it.

I'm not new to Elizabeth Reyes but I'm new to the Boyle Heights world. And although this book has a lot of the other characters' stories, you can read it as a complete standalone. But having read this and seeing what happens to some of the characters, I'm super curious to go back and read the other books to get the full story of their journey, specially Leo and Annie's.

Nine first appears as the typical bad boy, sleeping with a girl every other night, never having been in a relationship, arrogant, cocky etc etc.
Drew has a baby girl and is in a committed relationship with a nice guy who loves her and her daughter, but when she meets Nine, even though he's everything she used to want but now stays away from, she can't help but feel attracted to him. That night when they find themselves stranded together they have a deep conversation that stays with them both long after, and makes Nine think about his life and what he wants from it.

These two keep being forced together due to having friends in common, and their interest grows with every interaction. They both know they can only ever be friends because Drew is in a relationship and Nine is everything she doesn't looks for in a guy anymore. But every conversation they share, touches Nine in a way that he subconsciously becomes the man Drew looks for, he becomes a better man. With every interaction, convo and touch they fall deeper for each other but there's always that slight problem - Drew is taken and she still sees Nine has the bad boy.
Only she's not happy, she doesn't really love her boyfriend, only how good he is for her and her daughter and that he has her baby's daddy approval.

After a very intimate dance at their friend's wedding in front of everyone, there is no doubt to anyone that there's a certain spark and intimacy between them, and that finally makes Drew realize that she can't stay in a relationship that has no real future. But not even after being boyfriend free, does Nine get the girl. Drew still sees him as the guy who she needs to stay away from, he is not the type of man to take home to her daughter... so she tries to stay away from him but Nine won't let her go that easy. He has something to prove. He needs to show her how much she has changed him and that he IS the man for her. And that in itself comes with drama, lies and doubt, lots of doubt.

It is not easy and Drew makes him work for it but what they share is so real, so powerful, it is beautiful to watch them even when they both have doubts and fight their feelings. These two were meant to be from the start. And I loved the slow burn, and the friendship they built before taking the next step. I really really enjoyed this book and everything about it. I loved the characters, even when they frustrated me and all I wanted was for them to open their eyes to what was right in front of them. I loved the plot and the love, oh this was such a beautiful love story. I can't wait to read all the other's stories now.

I’ve always loved Elizabeth Reyes’ books. We Were One is probably my favorite, but Lila and Beast were also pretty freakin’ spectacular. I was very pleased to find that Nine was another satisfying, emotional addition to my Elizabeth Reyes keeper bookshelf.

One thing that Elizabeth Reyes does better than tons of other authors is creating a satisfying, interesting backstory for her characters. I often have a low tolerance for backstory, and when authors get too in depth, I tend to zone out and sometimes skim pages. But I never do that with an Elizabeth Reyes book. Nine was no different. Nine and Drew had complex, rich backstories that let me get to know them as characters and better understand their motivations. It made them more real and relatable, in other words.

Nine is a great hero. Is he perfect? No. He’s a little jealous and maybe a smidge overprotective. He also has a past reputation as a manwhore to overcome. But when he loves, he loves with his whole heart, which applies to Drew and his friends/family alike. He’ll do anything for those he loves, and at the end of the day, is there anything sexier than that? (There were also some scenes between Nine and Drew’s daughter that were all kinds of adorable. Hot guy + cute kid = exploding ovaries)

This was also a slow burn romance, which I love. Nine and Drew got to know each other as friends (friends with a TON of sexual tension, but still…) before jumping into bed together, and I really appreciated that. There wasn’t any instalove. (And y’all know how much I hate instalove)

Drew was a little harder for me to warm up to as a heroine. I get that she’s a single mom and has some past daddy/mommy issues to overcome so I mostly gave her a pass, but there were times when I thought she was too tough on Nine, and maybe a little too judgy for my liking.

On a more positive note, though, as with all Elizabeth Reyes reads, the sex scenes were hot and spicy, and the sexual tension between Nine and Drew practically crawled off the pages and smacked you in the face. (Which is a good thing, in case that wasn’t clear.)

So, all in all, Nine was another highly 1-clickable read from an author I love.

Full disclosure: We received an ARC from the author, free of charge.

This is not my first book from this author but it is the first book I've read in this series and it was a good read. Nine made me wish I had read the previous books so I would have been more familiar with the side characters because they also play a major part in this story and it made me feel as if I was missing some things when it came to them. There were things I liked and disliked about this story. I really hated Daniele's nickname Drew, but it was something I could deal with. The chemistry between Nine and Drew was there, there's no denying that and when it came to their story there was sort of a slow burn feeling to it. This story had it's sweet, funny and steamy moments and it was full of great characters but some parts of the story felt as if it moved too slow and some parts moved too fast, especially the ending. When the characters finally decided to commit to each other, we got a sweet epilogue and the story was over but I wished we had gotten a little more. It was a sweet but disappointing ending at the same time for me. This wasn't my favorite read from this author but it also wasn't a bad read. I would tell readers to give it a try and see for yourself.

Nine is Reyes at her best. A hot, alpha hero with heart. A strong, likable heroine. Plenty of angst, steam and either miscommunication or misunderstanding. It doesn't always work out perfectly, but for me it did in this book. The only thing I would change is getting the couple together sooner. In the last 2 books I've read from this author the couple doesn't get together until past the 50% mark. In this case, atleast Nine and Drew were worth the wait. Watching their attraction grow and deepen into more was well done. They both had unique backgrounds and really fit perfectly together. I liked all the different people involved in sweet little Chelsea's life, her 3 dads, multiple sets of grandparents, aunts etc. I really enjoyed this book and give it 5 stars.

Can I have Nine of Nine? Oh, Wait. That won't work. Read to find out why. ;)
Reyes definitely has the ability to make me wish I was a cougar. Not that Drew is. She isn't....don't want to mislead. Just that I might go all cougar like on a real-life Nine. I'd still want to slap him a couple of times like I did this Nine but that might be fun :O When I didn't want to shake them, Drew and Nine had me smiling and laughing...and giving out some serious sighs. And Orlando is coming. Can I say my jaw dropped? Once again Reyes gave us a book that had me flipping the pages to see what would happen next and in the end, had me sitting on the edge of my seat begging for more.

LOVED

I loved everything about this book. From beginning to end and even the snippet of Orlando I absolutely loved. The emotions and feelings running through the book were all well done.

5 stars for an amazing read, kept me on my toes throughout. I’ll be sharing with my friends.

I look forward to the next book and I can’t wait. I absolutely love all of Elizabeth’s books. I look forward to always reading them.

HEAD OVER HEELS!!!

Like every book of Eli’s I absolutely love it! I was on the edge the whole reading. The story remind me a little of ABEL and Nelly (my favorite 5th street) but I think Nine was over the top and won my heart!! Eli’s are the best reading always, that’s why I waited a long to read this book cause I knew when I start it, I wouldn’t put down, and although I had to (cause life interferes) I was anxious to get back to it!!! I can’t wait for Orlando’s story!!

Good book

This was a good book. I didn’t give it 5 stars because the couple didn’t get together until the end and then the book seemed over. Plus they kept their hook up a secret but there was nothing about their friends finding out. I just the book rushed to end right after Nine and Drew got together.

Nine out of five stars!

Great read for any woman who likes a fine wine ;-)
We all love a bad boy and with Nine you can't help but to feel a frustrated attraction. You know he is a player but cannot wait for him to be loved by Drew. Great drama, sweet moments and suspense at the right moments. Not to mention a hilarious read!

This is probably one of my favorite books by Elizabeth. The banter between Nine and Drew had me cracking up and I couldn’t put it down. I definitely recommend it if you want some fun between characters and some drama thrown in. I didn’t expect Nine to be the way he was so it made it that much better! It was a fun, easy read and I can’t wait for the next story!

Loved his story!!

I always like Drew and glad Elizabeth gave her a story. Nine was beyond my expectations for Drew and Elizabeth picked a super hottie for her. Thank you. I enjoyed this book and wished it didn’t end but hoping to get a more in O’s book. Hurry, I’m read to read more!! ❤️❤️❤️

Nine..... my new book boyfriend/husband/baby daddy <3

I loved this one beginning to end. I knew from the moment I read Nine's first smarta$$ comment in Beast that Nine would be my man... and I was right!!!

I love the bad boy turned to mush when he falls in love guys - and that is exactly what Nine is :)

It was also great getting Drew's story and I think her and Nine were perfect together.

OH MY GOD THIS BOOK JUST ABOUT KILLED ME!!!!!!!

Since reading Elizabeth's work over the years, she just ups the ante EVERY. SINGLE. TIME! I am never disappointed in what she does.

Once I have digested all that is NINE and Drew, I will finish my review as I literally just closed the kindle on their story.

Great book

Nine is not as intense as Beast was. It was easier mentally to read. Elizabeth Reyes makes you fall in love with me characters and root for them as if you are their friends or family. Nine does the same. Totally worth reading.

Saying “Eli Reyes is the master of writing alphas and Nine is no exception” is the truth but it almost underplays how good this book really is. Can love really change a person? Is a chance at love worth the risk? The slow build and depth of emotions make this a must read!

Elizabeth Reyes delivers again; in this story you have a sassy lovable heroine in Drew and Nine is a super sexy alpha. I loved their chemistry and the banter between the two. Add in that epilogue and the bracelet - so adorable.
Can't wait for O's story!
