7 books36 followersI trained as a librarian at the same time I discovered my love of publishing. I worked for Viking Children's Books for 6 years before moving to Virginia for my now-husband to study for his PhD.
Leaving NYC meant returning to my library background. I have worked as a high school librarian, a community college librarian, and a 4-year college librarian. I am now the manager of a library in the Ohio University system.
It took the birth of our daughter and support from a Viking colleague who eventually became my agent for me to try my hand at writing.
I wrote my first book, What Daddies Like, to offer dads of all sorts a book depicting a father and child together. It's surprising how rare it is to find a children's book that gives the dad the spotlight and allows the dad to be the one who gives the baby a bath, gives the baby a goodnight kiss, etc.
Of course I had to balance things out by writing a book for mommies, too--What Mommies Like. Because mommies & daddies like so many of the same things (hugs, quiet time, smooches), the mommy and her cub do something a little different--they take a field trip to the library.
My third book, All Kids Are Good Kids, is a poem about all of the types of kids we encounter, and how they are all good kids no matter what.
2019 was a big year: All Kids Are Good Kids was published in March on the same day as the board book of What Mommies Like, followed by What Daddies Like in April 2019. AND What Mommies Like and What Daddies Like board books were sold in Target (!!) and Wegmans around the country!
2020 was an even BIGGER year: my next book All Kinds of Kindness, published June 2020, was on Amazon's Best Books of the Month list for July AND their Best Books of the YEAR (!!) list in the ages 0-2 category!!!
In this book, readers are reminded of the many ways they can show kindness--from hugging someone afraid of a bug to making a card for a sick friend. I'm hoping my book can encourage families to find ways to be kind in their families, their neighborhoods, their schools--everywhere!

What do daddies like? Would they like spending a day with their son? This idea sounded good to Daddy Bear whose young cub narrates the story. Daddy Bear’s cub wakes him up with smooches. “Daddies like smooches. Daddies like hugs. Daddies like ‘Good morning to you!’ ”
The anthropomorphized bears are both oddly shaped with short arms; tiny, barely visible legs; small, half-oval ears; and dual-colored button noses. Topping off this original look, Daddy Bear and his cub possess widely expressive eyes and mouths that sell most activities. Humor is widely present, which will tickle young children.
What Daddies Like makes a terrific Father’s Day present for dad and his son. I think it works for a daughter as well. The un-named cub wears a non-gender specific yellow jumper with a blue-striped shirt and carries a small yellow bunny in the front pocket.
What Daddies Like is an adorable, solid double-debut by children’s author Judy Carey Nevin and artist Stephanie Six. 2018 brings What Mommies Like.

This book would be a good board book. Only a few words per page and essentially a list of what daddies like - things like adventure, monsters, hugs and quiet time. A sweet book for dads to read with their little ones.

This is an adorable celebration of things for little children to do with their daddies. I like that it takes on non "traditional" roles without making a big deal of it. The illustrations are adorbs and it would be a great choice for a toddler storytime read for father's day!

A nice, quiet, and calming book with soft illustrations that make this a great selection for bedtime. The simple words and sentences would be wonderful for youngsters just beginning to read on their own. No narrative and no real characterization here, which allows the reader to easily substitute him/herself into the story but may be too simplistic to hold the attention of some youngsters.

Cute and simple list of what dads like.

If you're looking for a super sweet, lovey-dovey daddy and toddler tale, this is a great book. It would make a perfect bedtime story for babies and young toddlers. It's a very quick read with just a few words per page. (I would not leave a baby or toddler alone with the book as it isn't a board book, so your pages could get eaten, but if your young ones sit quietly on your lap or lie in bed for bedtime stories then it works.)
I think it would also work well for preschool story-time around Father's Day.
The illustrations are soft and cute.
There's not much "story" - it's basically a concept book about what daddies like, and it follows a young toddler bear and his father throughout the day - listing what daddies like. (Though of course, in some illustrations you wonder if the daddy is really enjoying the activity or if it is mostly toddler bear enjoying himself. My kids were quick to point out things like - "daddy bear looks dizzy there...")
My children are older than the intended audience, but they both loved it and voted to give it 5 stars. They made comments comparing daddy bear to their own father, and finally concluded that it was mostly the same except for a few things. They also both thought the illustrations were super cute and discussed how the illustrator must have used watercolors for the sky, bringing up their own watercolor painting experiences.
We have read super sweet lovey-dovey mom-child books so it's a nice twist to see this with a daddy.

I loved reading this book. I have a special bond with my dad, like most girls do, and when I saw the book I knew I had to book it up and read it. To me, the book holds a special place in my heart and as I flipped through each page, I got nostalgia thinking about all of the things me and my dad did together when I was younger. It is true that my daddy did, and still does love smooches and hugs. I don't think he will ever outgrow them.

This is a lovely book. It is a great one for a dad to read to his small children. I can see a dad reading it and acting out what is written. "Daddies like hugs" and then giving his child a hug. Or once the child understands to give his dad a hug. So I highly recommend this book.

3.5 I enjoy the illustrations.

The art here reminds me of some stones I saw at a garden center recently, shaped like animal heads.
Those are cute, here the art is just sort of ugly. Otherwise this is a perfectly workmanlike book about fathers. Lots of similar books out there with more attractive art, look for What Daddies Do Best, I Love My Daddy Because..., I Love My Daddy

Another library copy my 1 year old and I borrowed. Caught our attention because it was about Daddies, and my son loves his 'Da'. He found this book more interesting the second time I read it, as he had pulled it down to look at himself, and I ended up reading it to him again. He talked to me and looked at the pages as I turned each one. A simple, sweet little book.

My husband enjoyed reading this book to our daughter. It's a sweet book with charming illustrations that really showcase the bond between daddies and their littles.

Very Cute. I realized on the third read that it progresses from morning to bedtime, so comes cozily full circle. A refreshing rhyme scheme of every third sentence.
