If I could give this book 100 stars I would! The illustrations and story are wonderful. But most of all, the last two pages contain one of the most important lessons we can teach our children these days. When my mom picked this book originally from the library and I sat down to read it with the kids the very first time, I was saddened by yet another story that glorifies how we as humans use animals for our own entertainment. I was almost annoyed with my mother for picking such a story. And then - Bam - what a plot twist! My very favorite ending to a book!!! I hope this message reaches as many kids out there as possible

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

Dumbo is a baby elephant born at a small, ragged circus. His enormous ears make him initially the butt of many jokes, but prove to be his saving grace when he uses them to fly. After his mother causes a ruckus in his defense, she is sent away from their small circus. Dumbo's flying fame soon allows the entire circus to move to a huge enterprise called Dreamland in NYC, and there he finds his mother again. But when the mean Dreamland owner refuses to let them be reunited, Dumbo's circus friends help him and his mother escape together and make a new life in the freedom of the jungle.

This is the storybook version of the new live-action Dumbo movie in theaters and the book is a great re-telling for younger readers. I really enjoyed the simplification of the story and the illustrations are nice--I was amused that Danny Devito's character very much looks like him in the book, too. Overall this is a great pick for fans of Disney and/or the new Tim Burton film.

I don’t think I’ve shown my 3.5 year old the story or the movie this is based on. When she first read it with me (after reading a couple of times with her dad), she managed to empathise with the characters, pointing out the bits that is unkind and then stated “this is a sad story, that’s why my eye is bleeding (not!), and I need an ice pack for my eye.” The end of the story was good though, how the animals were freed into their natural habitat, it gave her a light relief. She said she isn’t sure about watching the movie yet - me neither.

I chose this for the illustrations and as a point or comparison. It saddens me to see so much change in some things and so little in others.

Beautiful tie-in to the movie with a condensed movie narrative.
