A story about the employees in the Mackintosh’s toffee factory that also involves Christmas? I was sold! The mere squeak of the cellophane wrappers of ‘Quality Street’ as they reveal all kinds of sweet and delicious toffee and chocolate confections is enough to set the old gastric juices flowing with desire!

Set in the 1930’s, it follows a group of girls working at the Mackintosh’s sweet factory in Halifax. Renee Calder may be the newbie, but she’s a bright girl with a keen interest in how the fa

Set in the 1930's when Quality street chocolates where first produced. I felt like I had been transported back in time watching the workers hand wrapping and filling the tins of Quality street in the run up to Christmas. It must have been very tempting working on the Quality street line with the delicious aroma of chocolate and the various fillings.

The story takes you into the lives of the workers at the factory in the run up to Christmas. Reenie Calder has always dreamed of working at the choco

Crimbo and Choc’s, 2 elements guaranteed to make a great read!
I think its important to point out the Author has many years experience as company archivist and historian for her local chocolate factory and this shows in her writing....her knowledge of ‘Mackintosh’s’ and ‘Quality Street’ and what ‘went on’ in the factories in the 1930’s ( when the book is set ) is nothing short of superb and you can tell she writes with a genuine love of her subject

After a long search for this book, I finally got hold of it. I adore quality street, and consider Christmas incomplete without them. I want to start by reviewing the cover of the book, the illustration of 3 young ladies in their 30s clothing, the old English street with snow and the quality street logo at the top was the perfect cover. It was clearly very well thought through. I didn’t find it hard getting engrossed within in this book, the characters were all interesting in their own way and al ...more

I’m not sure why but this book didn’t grab me from page one. Once I got in to it though wow I couldn’t put it down. It’s a story about the Mackintosh factory in Yorkshire making Quality Street Chocolates. This is set in the 1930’s when Quality street were first made. It follows the lives of some of the factory girls whose lives were quite tough at this time. There are lots of ups and downs as we follow the rollercoaster of their lives. I really loved this book and I hope we have more adventures ...more

Inspired by the true story of the Quality Street factory and its loyal workers The Quality Street Girls by Penny Thorpe is a story steeped in nostalgia and will stir up many memories for its readers. We all know and love the famous brand that has been an accompaniment to our Christmas festivities for so many years. But how many of us have actually given scant thought to how this successful brand came about and who exactly were the people behind the delicious. mouthwatering creations? Little did ...more

We have all heard of and no doubt eaten, the iconic brand of ‘Quality Street’, right? I don’t know about you but whenever I hear those two words, I instantly think of Christmas and being able to delve into the purple tin of goodness, trying to find the green triangles and orange crunches before someone else fills the tin up with wrappers. We have all been there I’m sure! Although saying that, I remember the Quality Stre

I just couldn't resist a book about the factory where they made Quality Street for the first time in the 1930s. There's just something about those brightly coloured, cellophane wrapped sweets (I'll fight you for the strawberry creams!).

This is the story of four of the girls who worked on the lines at the Mackintosh factory in Halifax. Reenie was my absolute favourite. I loved her. Just about to turn 16 when the book begins, her dream is to work at the factory so when she gets a job there her dre

Oh My God I Loved This Book. This book will stay with me for the longest time. I can see it being one of favorite books of the year and definitely in my Top Ten Books of All Time. I picked, 'Quality Street Girls, on a rim while waiting in line to be served at my local bookshop. Sooo glad that I did. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It can be read any time of the year but I would advise that Christmas with a tin of Quality Street is the ideal time.

This is really a 2.5 rounded up. I was very excited when the book club choose this. It had good reviews and the cover looked so inviting! However, it just seems that the people who didn’t like it didn’t write a review. This is not a good book. It is just about Ok. The jacket promises 3 girls, one factory and a Christmas they’ll never forget. Well there were 4 main girls, and really it could have been set anytime as Christmas didn’t feature as I thought it would. It was almost incidental. The cha ...more

I just love Quality street chocolates and that is what drew me to this book, it is a Christmas tradition with my husband that started many years ago. (we still have one tin left in the closet). This story revolves around 3 families, a wonderful group of people and one "spurned" woman who wants revenge. This is such a great read that if your like me will read it as quick as I could. You will feel like you are right there in Halifax, UK along with the "girls" who work and live in this working town ...more

What could be more exciting than working to create famous chocolates? Three women from different backgrounds meet on the conveyor line and form an unlikely bond. One is a supervisor, another a regular worker, and the last is a new hire. Their personalities clash as does their work ethics until they all realize they want the same thing - keeping their jobs at the factory. As they learn to work side by side, their personal lives intervene. Soon what they thought was a fault in their work skills be ...more

I’ve just finished The Quality Street Girls by @penthorpebooks - this is such an amazing book. A heartwarming Christmas story that follows 3 girls who work at Mackintosh toffee factory. All 3 of the girls were great strong female characters who I could relate to straight away. Set in the 1930s it shows how much things have changed for the working women. I really enjoyed that it was based in a chocolate factory and it had such a beautiful ending. This book is so worth a read especially to get you ...more

#TheQualityStreetGirls #NetGalley A break from my usual crime thriller genre I was attracted to this book by, well, its connection to chocolate!! What a lovely book it was, set in the 1930's around Mackintosh's chocolate factory and the new Quality Street line. A lovely blend of fact and fiction with a real heartwarming story set in the run up to Christmas. Well written with well rounded characters, I loved Reenie and Diana and couldn't stand the wicked Mrs Roth. Heartbreaking in places but a th ...more

Chocolate + Christmas

Easy read, charming and delicious. There wasn’t any major twists and turns but historically it was nice to learn how working women were treated in the 1930s and how friendships were built and maintained. I was definitely given an image of how things were, the descriptions were really good in that respect.
A lovely story and a definite buy for Grandmas everywhere who will love it.
I enjoyed it a lot and will look out for any further books about The Quality Street Girls.

Drawn to the cover of this book but not so much to the story. I was actually expecting something quite different. I just found it quite choppy not much of a story. A few enjoyable spots but not many.

I loved that it was set in Halifax and involved a chocolate factory. Unfortunately, the story just didn't grab me. An enjoyable read all the same. Well researched.
