I picked up some interesting facts about my favorite tenor:

Virtuoso – Luciano was not just an amazing tenor, he was also a gifted painter and a wonderful chef.

Mentor – Opera singer Joan Sutherland sponsored Pavarotti and connected him with larger venues and audiences that eventually made him famous. Sutherland also personally trained him to optimize his bel canto (vocal abilities all operatic performers must develop) by teaching him to master his breathing in order project over greater distances and longer periods without any loss in quality.

Heritage – Pavarotti’s father, Fernando, is generally acknowledged to have had a superior voice to Luciano's. Fernando had many offers from patrons to sponsor a career in opera; however, he was never able to overcome his debilitating fear of the stage. He only sang for his family in private and to pass the time on his job as a bread maker. Thus, Luciano embodied all the dreams of his father and shared his voice with the world.

I thoroughly enjoyed Pavarotti before I read this, now I appreciate him more than ever. The biographical details were fascinating and the beautiful photos furnish us with an intimate, familial connection with our larger than life subject.

Update: Be sure to check out the 2019 film "Pavarotti" by Ron Howard and enjoy the links below.
