The Oxford Dictionary of Saints
The Oxford Dictionary of Saints gives concise accounts of nearly 1100 saints who lived, died, or have been venerated in Great Britain and Ireland, as well as others of notable historical importance from around the world. The entries range from the famous to the obsure, from the great saints
of early Christendom to often forgotten local saints. The new edition includes entries on martyrs from the early Christian centuries, additional entries on Greek and Russian saints, and recently canonized modern saints. An introduction describes the tradition of English hagiography and traces the
history of saints' cults from earliest Christian times through the Middle Ages to the reform of the Roman calendar in 1969. Bibliographies are provided and a topographical index lists places in Great Britain and Ireland with which saints are associated. Also included are a calender of principal
feasts and indexes of iconographical emblems.

Did not expect to have this much fun.

Very dry, just the facts. And in many cases, ONLY the base facts. If you want to know the names, dates of birth, titles and native countries of Saints, you'll find that here. A LOT of that here.
But if you want to know WHO these people were and WHY they were made saints... Well, you're better off looking elsewhere.

A great resource for saints associated with Europe and England. A good reference and research book. It contains in-depth, well-researched information which has been succinctly put together. Where there is doubt about the authenticity of any source material, this is clearly stated in the text.

No frills. Good for what it is. This is not something I would read cover to cover, but whenever a saint comes up in my Medieval studies, I know I can turn to this trusty volume to give me a little background.

Good glossary, index. Not too much info, short versions of the tales, but a good reference guide to get you going! Feast days listed several ways in appd
