Blood Vows

Rate this book
He’s sworn to find his son.

Dallas Mason did whatever was necessary to survive his stint in black ops. While in the Collective, there was no line he wouldn’t cross, and no mission he wouldn’t take. He bedded the enemy to secure his freedom and return to his brothers and build a new life, where the lines between right and wrong are sometimes blurred, but never erased. Now he and everyone at The Arsenal has one mission: find his son. His family and team will stop at nothing to achieve the goal—including sidelining Dallas from the hunt.

She’s sworn to find her father’s killer.

Kamren Garrett learned to rely on no one long ago. Surrounded by enemies, and surviving in hostile territory is nothing new for her. She can outshoot, outhunt, and out track anyone. She doesn’t need a Mason dictating what she can and can’t do to uncover the secrets of her father’s death. Dallas thinks she’s the problem. She doesn’t have time to handle him. She’s close to identifying her quarry. Unfortunately, she discovers she’s over her head and in need of help and she turns to the last person she ever wanted to ask—Dallas Mason.

Forced to take a step back from his true objective, Dallas sets his sights on fixing the problems threatening his son’s future home. Teamed with Kamren, he’ll uncover more than they expected. Failure isn’t an option when it comes to blood vows.

This series is 90% thriller and 10% romance, and I'm really OK with that. Other than the token protective actions, the men let their women do what they do best. In addition, there are usually 2 or 3 plot threads active all the time.

I liked this story a little more than the others, as the lead woman overcame a lot of challenges on her own. As an outsider, she could have allowed herself to be "rescued", but instead she stayed strong and determined.

The primary mystery was subtle and the reveal was startling. The thriller aspects were taut and tense.

The sexy bits were good too, but there are very few scenes.

I will continue to read this series.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

I have to admit that I fell in love with the Arsenal crew during book one and each new installment just reinforces that feeling. This time we focus on Dallas as he thinks he is fixing a problem when he goes to confront Kamren only to make the entire situation worse. At the same time he is still frantically looking for his son that he found out existed. Following the two scenarios keeps you hooked due to the impressive details involved. The author must do some in depth research to write these things. Add the romance angle on top of this and you will truly fall in love with this story as it all comes together. If you like romance suspense novels that have a military type feel to them then this is a must read book/series. I loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

I flipping love Kamren. I can't think of one point throughout this when she wasn't true to herself, to who she was. Perfect match for Dallas.

I think what I really like is that throughout the whole series there is absolutely no doubt that the men are definitely strong, capable and alpha... but... they are not arses. Not one of the ones that I have got to know better have let me down. They are vulnerable in their own ways and, sometimes after a little push, aren't ashamed to ask for help.

I love that the women are all strong... all capable... and all have a place within the Arsenal team.

Kind of surprised that I hadn't left a review before.

And I wonder if we will ever hear about Lilly again? ( 08/08/21 Looking forward to the new 'Refuge Ridge' series... wonder if Cliff will be part of it? )

( re-readathon 17/12/20 )

Re-read 08/04/21 Still feel exactly the same about Kamren... she just rocks. Coupla things tho... Dallas left her a note... she knew where he had gone from reading the note... a little later, after receiving the smartphone she confirms that she cannot read. Haley... how on earth was she still in the Resino area after her sexual abuse of Dallas and mental abuse ( and some sexual ) of Dylan. And why did Bubba still allow her in his place? If he is so loyal to the Mason family... she would've been banned. Sighs.

Another question... well, not so much of a question but a need for more information. Dallas was in the Collective due to a black ops thing... where was his black ops handler? How long was he with the Collective? Why on earth did he sleep with Marla... over and over again? It just feels so wrong. And just a little icky. I genuinely just don't get it. Annddd if he were in there cos of a black ops thing... was there ever any resolution??? I think I need to find a group chat or summat similar to sort this out...

08/08/21 Just finished listening to the Audible version... exactly the same thoughts... the reading, Haley. And how on earth did Riley not know? I mean, people are very good at hiding their 'issues'... but... if they had been friends for so many years and Rachelle had been living with them for a few months 24/7... how did she not see? And Brant was a dick. He has a lonnng road to travel to get redemption from me. Also, the narrator hasn't quite clicked for me... when she get into her rythm it flows... but sometimes her speech is a little stilted for me.

01/04/22 Mmm, still feel the need for more explanations... I mean... why was Dallas so torn about not being able to make a promise to another woman? The only women who are mentioned other than Kamren in a sexual context with Dallas are Marla and Haley. He owed them nothing. They both abused him. And I am still at a loss as to why he was even in the Collective. WHY?!!! And timeline wise. DJ was 4/5 when they found him... so, Dallas had been out for 5/6 years... how old is he? I really really really would like a family tree of the Mason family & their extended 'adopted' family too... Timelines don't make sense to me!!! Still. I love this. I love all of the Arsenal books as they currently stand!

Tho series gets better with each book. Elements are added from previous storylines providing interesting depth to the plot while still maintaining the romance. It’s hard to have romance when your heroine is shooting bad guys in the head, hunting, caring for her loved ones, schooling other badasses and tracking the whereabouts of Dallas’s missing son...but we still did. It’s certainly romantic for badass Dallas as he watches with pride as the heroine wins the one vs 100 paintball session. He definitely enjoyed watching her scoff down a rustic meal pretending to be some damsel in distress while poisoning a bunch of the Collective operatives. He loved watching her set traps to school a bunch of hunting psychos. If he didn’t I did!

Dallas initially misunderstood the heroine because her sister mislead all of the Arsenal operatives in believing Kam had been leaving her and her brother while traipsing off on some sort of misguided mission looking for who killed her dad. Kam is protective of Rochelle so never revealed the deeper issues her sister has. Meanwhile she has a lazy disinterested brother who is a leech and possibly one of the weakest male characters ever in a story. Poor Kam. The world on her shoulders, uneducated, scarred from a terrible childhood, loner, unloved and alone apart from her one friend who has her own problems. This is what I enjoyed about this book the depth of the main characters without compromising secondary characters. Although I would think a reader starting with this book would find it a challenge to understand everyone.

Dallas respects and admires Kam and I love that about this hero. Everyone at the Arsenal made her feel part of the unit, involved and valued. I loved this evolution because her negative self talk was entrenched and needed this encouragement to see her thrive. Her connection to the kids was heartwarming and I’m intrigued with what may be Lily’s story at some point. Her best friends brother adds another thread of a story as to what happened the night he ended up going to jail.

The Arsenal is definitely a series I will continue to read. I was disappointed with how singularly stupid the sister Riley is when you consider the level of training, intelligence and suspicion is surrounding her. For her to not see further than her childhood best friend even though everyone around her had an opposing view toward Kamryn. It just took too long for her to realize what Rochelle was up to when you consider she is supposed to be an investigator- she has a hell of a lot to learn. Can’t wait to read the next one.🙃

Dallas Mason and his brothers are The Arsenal, a paramilitary group that prefers to working the gray rather the black. But, Dallas has been there, in the black. He still has the mental and physical scars to prove it. He carries the weight of those jobs with him every day. However, there’s nothing he won’t do to protect his family and The Arsenal, especially when the family is a son he never knew he had.

While The Arsenal is focused on finding Dallas’s son, their local area is being torn apart. Dallas blames Kamren Garrett. Kamren seems to keep the whole town on pins and needles as she accuses more than one person of the murder of her dad. Dallas agrees to help her solve the murder no one, including him, is convinced is a murder because he believes she needs protected, needs his help. Dallas has no idea what Kamren is capable of. She heats of Dallas’s bedroom, makes him want things he doesn’t think he deserves, and comes to the rescue when he needs it the most. This is Kamren and Dallas’s story.

Blood Vows is the third book in The Arsenal series and this review is more about the series than just this one book. Cara Carnes creates a masterpiece with unlimited possibilities. While all the books can be read as a stand-alone, I suggest you start from the beginning. You don’t want to miss a single moment of strong, sexy men and beautiful, smart money overcoming all odds. If you are looking for a book or series that you can get lost in, that will keep you up at night and make you wonder what happens next while you are grocery shopping, dig in to this series. It comes to life before your eyes.

Cara also gives you a bonus nugget. Between every book is a novella that is available on “Cara Carnes Author” Facebook page for free. Then, while you are waiting on the next book in the series, check out The Counterstrike Series to meet up again with all your favorite Arsenal folks.

New Dawn is the free read novella after Blood Vows and before Zero Trace (book 4).

Three and a half stars.

This is the turn of Dallas Mason. Formerly a hit man for The Collective he found out at the end of the last book that he has a son by Marla, his former handler.

Kamren Garrett is pretty much living off grid, seeking the truth about her father's death even though her sister Rachelle and brother Cliff show no enthusiasm and are glad he's dead. Kamren might not be book smart, being dyslexic meant she dropped out of school really early, but she can hunt, track and shoot better than most other people.

When Dallas comes into the Sip and Spin in Marvell he stirs up a hornets nest which puts Kamren front and centre in the sights of the local lowlifes, the Marvell Dogs. It's not clear if it's her investigations that get her followed and almost killed or Dallas' unwarranted interest, either way her only hope of survival is with The Arsenal.

Dallas soon learns that his preconceptions about Kamren were incorrect, far from being a drug-addicted member of the Marvell Dogs she's a crack shot and unbelievably brave. Her skills could be the edge he needs to rescue his son from whoever is hiding him away.

I liked this but I didn't love it. I didn't really think that the character of Kamren worked, she was supposed to be some kind of genius hunter, brought up almost entirely by her father, left school scarily early, living in her car and yet most of the time she spoke and acted just like all the other women in The Arsenal. Also, unlike in the other books, Dallas keeps trying to protect the little woman, which really irritated me because Kamren was more than capable of taking care of herself, although this was framed as Dallas having to learn not to try to protect her.

This book did see some resolution of the issues with the nearby town of Marvell and Dallas' son so that was good but overall my least favourite of the series so far.

🌟5 STAR BOOK REVIEW🌟⁣

This book was so good but I’ll be honest I was exhausted after reading it! 😂 my brain wouldn’t switch off, the author writes in a way you feel you are there, being hunted/being the hunter.⁣

Blood Vows is book 3 of The Arsenal Series by Cara Carnes, the first 2 books are very good, but Blood Vows was bloody brilliant! ⁣
This book was a rollercoaster of a story, just when I thought I could take a breather the author upped the suspense & took us on more twists and turns.⁣

In book 1 I thought there was a lot of characters, for a start the series is based on 6 brothers who have served in various military areas (not all have returned unscathed) plus a sister and a loving mama who just wants some grandkids 😂 with their father having passed away, they are slowly turning their family ranch into a hi-tech military base, housing active operatives, and they’ve also created a warriors path project which helps & support veterans returning home.⁣

The heroines in these books are very independent especially with what they’ve been through or should I say what the author puts them through, despite this, they are kickass warriors, each having their own strengths and weaknesses.⁣

These characters come together in such a way you feel part of the team, family is everything, and the Mason men and their friends are certainly protective of the ones they love. ⁣

This is a fantastic romantic suspense story, be warned each book has dark themes but love, family group feeling and some laugh out loud moments lighten up the dark. (LOVED Kam taking on the 100 operatives in this book!)⁣

This book had everything! Must read for military/romantic suspense fans!⁣

If you haven't read the other books in this series I suggest you do that before reading this one. While it's not necessary it will make far more sense if you do.

Kamren Garett is looking for her father's killer, unfortunately her sister Rachelle has been bad mouthing her all over the place, calling her crazy and starting rumors she's on drugs. Rachelle and her brother Cliff have been at the Arsenal since Riley convinced everyone something bad was going on in Marville. The Mason's have their back even against their sibling.

The 'Marville Dogs' want her to stop her snooping around. After a confrontation with Dallas Mason at the Sip and Spin, a bar where her best friend Dani works. She leaves town. When she returns all is not well and she makes the decision to ask the Arsenal for help.

That's just the beginning of things blowing up, literally and figuratively. There's a lot going on in this book with Dallas looking for his son, a set of twins missing and the mystery that is Kamren and her backpack.

In spite of all that Dallas finds himself attracted to Kamren. These two are more than explosive as Kamren wins over the Masons and the Arsenal crew. I love all the characters and this book has more than one twist.

This is a very powerful read, it's emotional and hits on some very sensitive issues that are handled extremely well. All blended with humor and family.

All I can say is, don't miss this book!

The story picks up a few weeks after the end of Sight Lines/Double Tap. Mary and Vi are still wearing themselves thin looking for Dallas's son, even with Jud and Dylan on site. Dallas knows he needs to back off. They need a chance to rest and regroup. He takes on the Marville problem. Rachelle isn't very forthcoming on details, she does give him her older sister.
Kamren Garrett, father was murdered. The corruption in Marville runs deep and her father wasn't well liked, even by her. He was her father and she wants justice. She is getting close. When Dallas Mason tells her to drop what she is doing, that it's hurting her sister. Kamren wants her sister and brother safe, but she can't let this go. His interference stirs up trouble with the local gang and her best friend is caught between loyalty to her and to her brother's gang. She leaves town, hoping things will cool down.
Dallas's public declaration puts Kamren in danger. When she makes a dramatic entrance for help, the whole Arsenal takes notice. Dallas knows he wronged Kamren and is determined to make thing right. Her tracking and survivalist skills prove invaluable to their teams. Dallas and Kamren are soon falling for each other. Rachelle doesn't like it. Her acting out escalates and the single Mason men find themselves fending her off. Then Reily finds out.
The research Kamren has done into her fathers death leads to some unexpected places, when Mary and Vi get their hands on it. Kamren's fresh eyes give them the most promising lead on Dallas's son yet. It's time to bring him home, and they are in for some unexpected surprises. The Mason family are all in. Kamren again proves invaluable in helping them find their way.
A fast paced, a little steamy romantic suspense. Loved Dallas and Kam's story. I had already pre-ordered this book. I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy. I am voluntarily leaving my review. Can't wait for the next book.

I loved this third book in the Arsenal series! The plot continues where Sight Lines left off and kicks ass better than its predecessors. The story is very well written and at times very emotional, with plenty of action, intrigue, suspense, humour, some steamy scenes and a surprising plot twist I hadn’t seen coming. We are introduced to Kamren Garrett (Rachelle’s older sister) who, from a young age was raised in her father’s shadow to shoot, hunt, trap, and track. Dallas Mason and Kamren have an immediate and intense reaction when they first meet – mutual mistrust and prejudice. When her investigation to find her father’s killer stalls, she reluctantly comes to The Arsenal for help and in exchange agrees to assist Dallas find his son. Seems each is perfectly positioned to help the other with what they desire the most. Too bad there are other combatants in the field – dangerous and deadly ones, prepared to go the distance to prevent them from succeeding. I absolutely loved Kamren’s character – how she overcame a harrowing childhood; her confidence and badass attitude plus her Rambo-like skills. I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

5 deserved stars - Carnes has done it again.
I loved the paramilitary outfit from book 1 on and I can't help but admire Dallas in this story.

He desperately wants to find his son while keeping the trouble brewing around his sister's best friend's older sister (Karmren) at bay.
She's the female lead in this story and is looking for her father's killer. But her sister who lives at the Mason compound's been bad mouthing her to the entire community to the point where she's at rows with the locals.

There's a plot twist nearing end regarding Kamren's sister Rachelle which had me shocked. Even though I'm sure that most have already read Blood Vows, I won't give anything away to those who haven't - needless to say, it's gripping!!!

A page-turner once again, Carnes has got me singing praises.
There's adventure and survival when the Mason's go into the woods to look for Dallas' sons, suspense while Kamren's looking for her Dad's killer, jealousy, betrayal and hate as a plot twist.

Cannot wait to read Gage's story (book 4) - how will he handle the secrets Zoe's been keeping? I've got goosebumps yet again :D

Loved!!!

I swear each book gets better. And steamier. Lol. Loved Dallas and Kamren. They got off on the wrong foot no thanks to rumors and her sister. But they kick ass as a team. She is awesome and helped show off her skills a time or two. Lots going on in this book. Backlash from the collective, still searching for DJ (another surprise attached to this), murder investigation into Kams dad, gang issues in town, crazy people who need to be dealt with from prior issues or upcoming and then a big surprise at the end. Good lord this book was jam packed and so kick ass. Then we get a slight look into a possible investigation 15 years overdue. Loved the kick ass paint ball scene. She killed it. And loved how everyone took her into the fold. Looking forward to learning more about Ellie. Loved how she stood up for Jesse. He is a doll and needs people in his corner. And we get more hints about gage and Zoey. Lol. Can’t wait for that hot mess. This book def packed more steam which was nice and Hot. Both Dallas and Jud have dirty talking down.

Grrrr, finishes with such a tease......

Dallas has already been to hell and back but the search for DJ is brutal. Almost as brutal as Kamren's story, a story that is horrifying, sickening, heart breaking and shocking, but no matter how bad, no matter how much she suffers she knows family is more important than anything. So she doesn't let it break her, she remains standing, battling to the end.
Dallas knows how important family is, both blood family and chosen family, but even he is amazed at how far Kamren will go, how mentally tough she is and just what skills she has hidden....and he will stop at nothing to be the man standing by her side in battle.
After the emotional tornado that is this book we are teased with the promise of celebration....only to find we have to wait for book four, initially frustrating, but actually genius as I am buying it right now....Mama Mason has promised us so much!

Just love this series!

I seriously love this series, this author. The books have dark themes (paramilitary, so kidnapping, violence, even torture) so check for trigger warnings if you have sensitivities, but it’s not in your face, and it isn’t without purpose. It fits with the story lines and the development of the characters. Each book ends with a HEA for the couple.

The character development is amazing. They (both male and female) are strong, independent persons with flaws, just like real people. They are not perfect, not impervious to harm.

The stories are action-packed, with a great mystery in each. The “brainiacs” are women, who are respected as such by the men, who actually listen to them! :) They can be tearjerkers as well, but regardless of where you are in the story, you just can’t put it down until you finish.

I think this is my third time reading the series, and I’m still pulled right into the stories.

Blood Vows is an emotional rollercoaster guaranteed to make you laugh, cry and sigh. Dallas Mason recently found out he had a son. But the person who told him died before giving him a precise location and he and the folks at Arsenal are determined to find him. Meanwhile things in the next town over are heating up and baby sister Riley is being harassed which will never do. And last but not least Kamren Garrett pulls a super hero move right outside the gates of Arsenal and intrigues them all especially Dallas.
Kamren”s story will tear you up as will DJ & TJ’s. You have been warned. But it makes for a happier ending. This book can be read standalone but will be better if you’ve read Jagged Edge (The Arsenal #1) and Sight Lines (The Arsenal Book 2). This one kept me up reading way past my bedtime.

Bullets, exploding cars, headshots!! Dallas and Kamren come together in an explosive start. After Dallas calls Kamren out in a bar and puts a target on her head it all goes to hell when a local gang think its open season on her. Dallas is fighting his own demons after discovering he has a son but has no idea where he is. Kamren has never had someone she can trust or rely on. The attraction each feels for each other draws them together. While working together their love begins to grow until each would die for the other. This story is hot. It has hot alpha males and a strong street smart female who can out-shoot just about any male. I love the fact that Cara's female characters are just so strong in character while still retaining that fragile air. They don't come across as weak or to the other swing butch. They have big hearts ready to love that one that touches their soul.

Dallas is still searching for his son. He keeps coming out at a dead end with each search. He also knows he needs to help with the problem that is going on in their back yard, Marsville. He meets Kamren when he goes searching for answers.
Kamren has spent the last 16 months for the answers on who murdered her father. She meets Dallas and doesn't want to believe that he could help her. When trouble comes, she heads for the Arsenal. She ends up in trouble and Dallas and his brothers come to her rescue. She knows she needs to tell them everything.
They all agree to help her figure out who are after her and if they lead to her killed her father. Dallas is very intrigued with Kamren and will do everything possible to protect her. She even goes with on another search.
Will they find Dallas's son? Will they figure out who Is after Kamren and why?

Excellent series

This is an excellent series I’ve recently stumbled over. The author writes quite well in this para-military/romance genre. I laughed my a$$ off in parts of this story & cried. My only criticism would be it seems the animal characters get “forgotten” once mentioned (many authors make this mistake-as an animal lover it makes me nuts). Also, a huge secure military type secure compound would absolutely have security/war dogs (hint hint Ms. Cara) in addition to the human/camera/drone security. No matter what, dogs are best for some things - it’s why our military & police rely so heavily on them.... Looking forward for much more of this series, the Mason’s are incredible characters..

Now this one was truly a delight to get into. This delves even more into the characters as they continue with you getting more about the others. The meat is in this one that you chew on with savoring every bite. Dallas is one that was a bit of a mystery but when finished with this will no longer be that. Then there is Kamren whom you will enjoy to the fullest even though her opinion of herself at times is so low with secrets that will also be uncovered. The story in this one is filled to the brim with the drama having you catch your breath. The twist will cause you to look like a deer in headlights with the conclusion of this one nothing less than spectacular.

Dallas is on fire to protect his family. The entire Arsenal is on high protective stance for Dallas as well. So when Dallas and Kam cross each other, it isn’t pretty. I felt so bad and solitary for Kam. Being able to see and understand her from her perspective. Knowing that she wasn’t going to play the pity me card with anyone or share her life made her stronger but also made her more alone. Kam was fierce and stunningly awesome! Dallas could be an arsehat when he was being protective. It took me a bit to read through the entire book enjoying all of the suspense and the twists & didn’t want to miss a moment.

Only just found this series

Best thing about finding a wonderful series is you can binge read it. Which is what I have done since I read Jagged Edge. The series so far has been three books and 2 shorts. The second short New Dawn is after Blood Vows. Both shorts are available from the author so if you are reading the series make sure you get them as they provide a continuation of the story lines between the novels. Off to read the next book. Then I will be forced to wait for book 5. Enjoy I know I am.

I was knew I couldn't wait for Dallas's story, but I was not expecting Kamren! I absolutely love her. Obviously the women of the Arsenal are amazing and strong, but Kamren brought a new dynamic. Dallas is struggling along with the rest of the Arsenal while trying to find his son when he decided to confront Kamren about problems closer to home. Come to find out things are not as they seem. Kamren and Dallas will need each other more than they know to try to figure out problems coming from more than one front.

My favorite in the series so far. I honestly didn't think I was going to like this one as much as I did, and I will say it definitely had a lot going on in it, more than it needed, but it still worked. This book had the best heroine so far. She was skilled, intelligent, reasonable and realistic and when she had her moments of weakness or feeling insecure it made perfect sense and didn't seem like the author was trying to make her weak by it. I loved Kamren. Dallas was a little meh at times, but they worked so well together.

This was another great addition to this fantastic series. I loved Dallas and Kamren's story. It was well written and had likable and well developed characters. Dallas and Kamren were perfect together and had amazing chemistry. The book was fast paced, action packed, had humor and lots of emotions. A very enjoyable read that will keep you turning the pages from beginning to end.
I voluntarily received an advanced arc copy for an honest review.

I don’t know how Cara does it! Every book in this series is like dynamite to your emotions the original explosion hurts and then the dust settles and you see everything so clearly. Dallas and Karmen are amazing the whole storyline just gets better and better and seeing everyone from previous books is so awesome no matter what these team are family, they’re loyal to the bone and it makes me loyal to these books. ❤️🔥

Definitely a solid 3 1/2 star read for me.

Although I believe a person could enjoy the book without having read the first two I’m the series, I would not recommend it. There’s a lot of backstory that you need to know; and let’s face it, there are so many characters that aren’t new. I think you need the series from book one.

And I will definitely read the next book.
