I don't remember why I picked this up, I think because it was pitched as female James Bond, her husband and their secretary enter a relationship together while spying at the same time. And yes, it was that but it was far more erotica than romance.
This book is about Monica and Lane Peters, two spies who married before they entered the CIA and are still together years later. They both fancy their secretary, Kierra, and she returns the favour, but there is the slight problem of their dangerous job getting in the way.
I did enjoy this. The plot was, of a sort, nothing particularly new but it was done in a way I liked. The plot involved some danger, some undercover work and some hilarious lines that I really enjoyed. The three characters were all different enough from each other that I enjoyed their POVs and I did like how Monica was the leader in the trio, but Lane wasn't exactly crap at his job. Kierra is a poet, which is something I really enjoyed seeing because it's not a dream we normally see when someone is working as a secretary. I also really liked her relationship with Maya, her roommate who works as a cam girl, and I am interested to see how the next book comes along with Maya as the focus.
The second half of the book, when we're introduced to Kenny and Asif was more enjoyable than the first half for me, mostly because I liked Monica, Lane and Kierra having to adjust to this new situation in their relationship. The relationship between the three of them was done well because it felt like equal attention was giving to all sides of the triangle. The focus was more on how Kierra acted with Monica and Lane because she was the new person but it did give some page time dedicated to showing how Lane and Monica worked together and how well they worked together, which was something I really enjoyed.
My main problem with this I think was how much smut was in this. This is partly my fault because there is a reason why I don't read erotica and that is because I tend to get very bored of sex scenes in books when it feels like they're just there, rather than moving the plot or the characters along. But in this book, it was as if Kierra and Monica+Lane only had to look at each other to get turned on and this happened in every single scene. Your life was in danger - perfect time to think about how turned on you are. Someone just got bloodily murdered in front of you - that person was really attractive doing that. Finding out you have been creepily watched - brushed aside to focus on how much you want to have sex with them. It focused far more on the erotica side rather than the romance side and it just left me without that build up of the romance that I really wanted to see.
I will probably read other books by this author because I enjoyed her writing style and her characters, but I can only hope more focus goes on building up the relationship, rather than just how attractive they all find each other.
