Lorenzo Mattotti is an Italian comics and graphic artist living in Paris. A frequent contributor of covers for The New Yorker, he's recognized as one of the most outstanding international exponents of comics art. Mattotti won an Eisner Award for his graphic novel Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. He collaborated with Lou Reed in re-imaging Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven.

Una eterna Ghirlanda brillante

Ghirlanda è un libro enorme, con la sua copertina di cartone spesso e le sue 400 pagine bianco e nero di carta pesante di qualità. Già al tatto il libro emana sensazioni importanti; sensazioni che vengono ancor più evidenziate dalle immagini dettagliate, affascinanti, oniriche, incantatrici di un mondo immaginario, Ghirlanda, ossia Ghir-landa, terra dei Ghir, che sono strane creature a due zampe.

Esseri immaginari che vivono in uno spazio surreale in continua evoluzione e senza un tempo definito (che potremmo definire circolare?). Forse che questi Ghir rappresentino metaforicamente gli esseri umani?

In questi paesaggi che si modificano in continuazione, i Ghir indifesi restano in balia di creature mostruose che incombono, di divinità antropomorfe, di montagne che parlano, di mastodontici uccelli simboleggianti il destino.

Un misto di stili diversi, un variegato insieme di personaggi che si ispirano sia alla mitologia che alla letteratura che all'arte figurativa. Una storia elaboratissima che include famiglie in viaggio (esilio, migranti?), diluvi universali (bibbia?), attraversamenti del fiume che porta al regno dei morti (Dante?), ubriacamenti da fior di loto (Ulisse?) mostri mitologici, tarocchi, scambi tra mondo dei vivi e il mondo dei morti.

Ho faticato ad assegnare un significato preciso a ciò che leggevo. Ma mi è rimasta la voglia di ritornare a guardare certe parti, di rileggere certe pagine, di rielaborare parte della storia per trovarne i motivi reconditi o semplicemente per apprezzarne i disegni spettacolari.

Che cosa è in fondo Ghirlanda? Un insieme di bellissime immagini disegnate semplicemente per divertirsi e divertire, o un progetto grafico (durato ben 10 anni) ambizioso e difficile da decodificare? Ci sto ancora pensando.

"Grrr! Qui sono disegnate troppe cose che non sapevo. Questo mi fa infuriare! Sento che mi sta arrivando una crisi di conoscenza… AAHRRR!!!".

Reagisco come il vecchio Bombyx Vespertinus, quando incontro opere come Ghirlanda: mi incanto per interi minuti con lo sguardo fisso sul dettaglio più nascosto di una tavola; ho bisogno di toccare spesso le pagine seguendo con le dita il tratto ruvido del disegno in bianco e nero, quasi per aiutarmi nell'orientamento nel labirinto del significato; mi emoziono inaspettatamente in certe sequenze (Cocciniglia che danza ma non riesce a far sbocciare il suo nido mi ha fermato il cuore); mi entusiasmo quando colgo i riferimenti alla letteratura alta, all'epica e alla mitologia presenti nella trama o nella scelta dei nomi dei personaggi… Eppure, finita la lettura, rimango dubbiosa sui messaggi della storia nel suo complesso. Più risfoglio, meno mi sembra di comprendere e peggio mi irrito, ma in un certo senso anche più intensa è la fascinazione che provo.

A vederlo così, con la costa nera e le pagine grigie, sembra un volume pesantissimo. Lo apri: disegni bellissimi (ma con Mattotti si va sempre sul sicuro), arabeschi di tratti che si inseguono, texture tondeggianti e prospettive bellissime.
La componente visiva (e tattile), insomma, è da 5 stelle.
La storia, purtroppo per me e i miei gusti, è anch'essa estremamente "visuale": non ci sono spiegazioni logiche in un mondo che ha regole astratte e meccanismi e creature così di fantasia da risultare assolutamente distaccati e freddi, per il sottoscritto.
Mi ha ricordato Samorost, o comunque quei punta-e-clicca in cui è meraviglioso perdersi nelle immagini, ma in cui devi porconàre (veneto spotted, lo so) per venire a capo di qualcosa o per apprezzare i colpi di scena della storia.

Non mi stupisce che abbia vinto il premio Gran Guinigi 2017 come miglior graphic novel. Un amico mi disse “Ghirlanda è un insieme di baci e carezze sugli occhi”. Non posso fare altro che dargli ragione.

My first comic book read in adult age. And what a book! Beautifully drawn and told phantasmagorial story. A story of a great journey, a great wonder, and a great love. I have a very pleasant and light feeling after reading it. Beautiful.

Lorenzo Mattotti can really draw the hell out of anything, and Garlandia is testement to his talents. The linework is frenetic and jagged, but where it feels like it should be a mess we instead get some jaw dropping compositions and highly psychedelic bits of art. While the infleunces by Jim Woodring's Frank stories and Tove Jansson's Moomins is readily apparent, Garlandia is visually unique enough to stand on its own. The story follows a quaint group of creatures called gars who live in peace and have customs involving spirit dreams and visions. While there is a central plot with some catharsis to it, the story is told pretty loosely and is moreso acting in service to the artwork. It is a tad abstract at times and perhaps lacking in depth, but Mattotti's brilliant cartooning more than carries this reading experience for me. Will definitely want to revisit this again just to take in the artwork a few more times.

Ho sempre provato un gran timore all'idea di avvicinarmi a un libro di questo spessore: ovviamente parlo sì della mole fisica, ma anche dell lodi che si legavano al suo nome.

Le voci, per una volta, erano assolutamente fondate: è la storia di una famiglia, ma anche di una comunità; è una profezia mistica, un'allegoria; in alcuni punti è una critica alla società e in altri un inno alla vita.. cerca di portare così tanti spunti di riflessione che non posso fare un' analisi migliore, mi dispiace.

Ma se siete neomamme, padri, nonni, confusi, curiosi, avventurosi, spaventati.... beh, in tutti questi casi, e anche qualcuno in più, potreste adorarlo tantissimo.

Wat begint als een allegorische LSD-trip, neemt al gauw epische vormen aan wanneer Hippolites een tocht moet ondergaan om zijn land te redden en zijn vrouw en pasgeboren dochter van groter onheil te voorzien. Onderweg wordt hij langs alle kanten belaagd, moet hij dromen en verslavingen overwinnen en keert zijn stam zich tegen hem. Oh lieve hemel.

Heer Linthout Willy raadde me dit boek aan. Het vergde enige moeite om erin te komen, maar dan nemen de zwierige vormen en krasserige tekeningen je helemaal mee in de wereld van Garlandia.
Mythes kunnen nog geboren worden, zoveel is duidelijk.

I finally scored the French version after so many years of awaiting the Fantagraphics edition to fall to my strict price-points! Alas, it was a bit too dreamy of a story for me to comprehend the amount of what was going on and why that I require to be satisfied. The art is outstanding but I too often felt I could not decode its meaning properly.

Loved this wierdo graphic novel! The art was amazing - the intricate line work added so much movement and flow between the panels. I just wanted to keep flipping the pages to see what the artist and writer came up with next. The world of Garlandia was super fun and weird. Almost like adult moomin.
I can easily see this being a fun animation short.

It reminded me a bit of Fantastic Planet. That part if it I enjoyed.

The artwork was interesting and though-provoking at times

The characters were alright (most never stuck around long), but the ending was a bit anti-climactic.

I think I would have enjoyed it more if it had been a bit shorter.

Worth checking out on Unlimited.

Un racconto ingenuo ma meravigliosamente intrigante con delle tavole che si fondono con il racconto come solo il maestro Mattotti riesce a fare.. una storia senza pretese che porta il lettore in un mondo, quello di Ghirlanda, fatto di sogni, amore e segni di inchiostro.

Consigliato per chi cerca un Mattotti più intimista (e senza colori).

Un de mes préférés de l'ANNEE 2023 car c'est un OVNI. Un conte onirique dessiné à l'encre qui suit l'aventure des ...Guirs sur une planète inconnue. Un hommage à Moebius assez évident mais dans un style parfaitement maîtrisé où tout parait fluide, instinctif et léger. On sentirait presque le vent dans ces dessins. A LIRE calmement, comme un Guir.

Complètement chéper, Guirlanda est probablement (ma connaissance est encore limitée) un des plus grands hommages modernes à Metal Hurlant, et d'une certaine manière à la facette la plus décomplexée et no-fucks-given de Jodorowsky. Malheureusement je ne suis pas aussi perché moi-même que je l'aimerais, donc mon appréciation de l’œuvre reste au stade du profond respect et de l'admiration polie de petit coin de salon.

There’s a lot to love about this book. The illustrations are evocative, if deceptively simple. Initially I thought the drawings to minimalist to sustain a story of this length. I quickly realized the style was more than capable enough to express the range of moods, characters, and environments the story contains. The pen work is in continuous flowing swirls and spirals. Perfectly suited to a mythical world itself in continual flux.

The story borrows from many myths, including plenty of its own invention. Primarily, it is the Odyssey, a father attempting to return home to his wife, while encountering many adventures on the way including a lotus like plant and a journey to the land of the dead.

The book is so inventive that you are left with the impression that even the beings we are shown are the mere tip of the iceberg of beings contained in this world. One after another, monster after monster emerges. Each devouring the one before. Always a bigger fish. In this world is the family cast adrift, trying to find a home on solid ground to raise their newborn child.

Garlandia is the pen and ink hatched, gestural drawing stuff of dreams - but, to me, the plot, though original and, as the author writes, inspired by worlds such as 'Moomin land', created by Tove Jansson, left me underwhelmed. The story revolves around the 'Gar's a rotund, peaceful, garlic-esque people who live in a valley and never hurt anyone or themselves and how one baby's birth, the child of the hero Hippolytes, starts the Gars on a path to self destruction. In general, really no plot points stuck out to me, no character was especially exciting or original and overall it felt one note. Garlandia is masterfully drawn and composed....but was there a compelling story to tell with this drawing? I'm not certain. This was a book I was ready to buy on sight, just based on the drawing, like I did with 'The Song of Aglaia' but, in retrospect I am glad I didn't buy it, just borrowed it from the library's Interlibrary loan service.

Gostei muito do texto dessa hq, totalmente fora série, acho que nunca li um texto tão poético em inglês e acho que isso é mérito total do tradutor, pq não consigo nem imaginar, devido sobretudo a poesia e beleza que acho bem escarça na língua inglesa, que isso pudesse ter sido originalmente escrito em inglês, da pra sentir muito claramente que vem de língua mais derivada do latin no caso italiano. O traço é bem moderno e a história é daquelas que terminada a leitura vc ficará pensando e tentando captar ainda mais detalhes, tem um tom de aventura que te deixa preso e diversas referencias a literatura e mitologías. Não é uma hq qualquer, mattotti ficou 10 anos produzindo então recomendo que se dê uma chance, embora ainda ache que ele não encontrou sua obra prima de fato."
