Each book I have read in this series gets better. Marla Vail, her detective husband Dalton and step-daughter Brianna are all involved in solving this mystery, which has so many suspects that it takes them all to solve this whodunnit. This book takes us away from the salon and spa to a local fall festival, where Marla enters a bake-off hoping to win the cash prize to add a lunch cafe to her salon. The competition is stiff, with bloggers and amateur cooks all vying for the prize. Marla never expec ...more

A charity bake-off contest turns nasty for hairstylist Marla Vail. During a scavenger hunt she finds a real dead body. That’s not at all what she expected, but it’s not the first time Marla found herself in the middle of a murder investigation.

Marla assists her detective husband in finding a killer. She is shocked to discover the deceased had her fair share of enemies, but who had enough of a motive to kill? That’s the question Marla is determined to learn.

This is my book. I had great fun writing what could be considered my first culinary mystery. Food plays a large role in this story that starts off with a bake-off contest at a local farm festival. Hairstylist Marla Vail enters her coconut fudge pie in the competition, and the fun begins when one of the contestants is found dead in the strawberry field. Suspects include a celebrity TV chef, food critic, olive oil importer, food truck owner, pastry chef, and cookbook author. Not only will you lear ...more

In this next book of the series Marla and her friend Tally have entered a baking competition. The winner will receive a large check that would be put to expanding their business. They decide to enter a scavenger hunt while waiting for the winners to be announced. Since they have to do it solo they both head out to see if they can find all the clues needed to win. Marla enters a bake-off to try to win enough money to add a café to her Day Spa. Soon she finds the body of one of the other contestants, smacked on the head from behind, while wearing the jacket of a third contestant. And then she's sick to her stomach after tasting olive oil that is supposed to be EVOO. When another contestant ends up dead in a hit-and-run, Marla must set aside her queasiness to go investigate.

I love this series because I have relatives in Boynton Beach and recognize some of t

This is Book 15 in the Bad Hair Day Mystery Series. I have read each of these books and they just keep getting better and better. Marla Vail owns a hair salon and a day spa and is married to Detective Dalton Vail. In her “spare” time she gets involved in her husband’s cases. I was happy to see that they are trying to have a baby. This book is wonderful and I highly recommend it.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

This installment in the Bad Hair Day Mysteries is as captivating as the first! This story takes place at a fair, after Marla and her friend enter a competition, and it is chock full of the twists and turns that keep you guessing until the very end! Even when you think you know "whodunit" you discover that is completely not the case! In usual form, a body is discovered and the amateur sleuth Marla sets out to help her detective husband find the killer! There are no shortage of suspects or twists ...more

Review: TRIMMED TO DEATH by Nancy Cohen

TRIMMED TO DEATH is a low-key cozy mystery featuring amateur sleuth and hairdresser Marla, who lives in South Florida with her homicide detective husband Dalton and his adolescent daughter Brianna. When a harvest festival at a local farm includes a suspicious death, Dalton has jurisdiction and Marla investigates in her own gentle way. There's a number of people with possibly suspicious agendas, but Marla and her family persevere, even though eventually she

This is such a great series. I love the characters and am happy to see how they have progressed. Marla and Tally have entered a baking contest and though neither of them won, they were having fun. Until Marla comes across another dead body. She calls Dalton and now they have another case to solve with the help of Dalton's daughter and their friends. There are so many suspects and twists and turns to this mystery but Marla has to help Dalton solve it so she can tell him her little secret. She is ...more

“Trimmed to Death” earns 5+/5 Sweet Treats…Clever and Engaging!

Hairstylist turns chef? Nancy J. Cohen has penned a delightful twist to the fifteenth book in her Bad Hair Day series. Cut ‘n Dye salon owner Marla Vail, with BFF Tally Riggs, has entered her coconut fudge pie (recipe included) in a “for charity” bake-off contest. It is a great way to join in with the community for a great cause, but the ten-thousand dollar business grant earmarked for the winner would help facilitate the expansion p

One thing that I love about the Bad Hair Day Mystery series by Nancy J. Cohen is that the main character helps the police in solving the cases and they actually appreciate the help. Usually in a cozy mystery the main character is an amatuer crime solver who takes on the "case" because they are closely involved or someone they love is involved and they want to clear the person's name. Also by doing this they but heads with the lead detective and seem to "get in the way" more than help. However th ...more

One of the best things about cozy mysteries is that you never know what you are going to learn in each book. The Bad Hair Day Mysteries is one of my favorite series.
This book takes us away from the spa to a local food fair event and bake-off. The competition is rough but it is the behind the scenes grudges that are killer.

I like the relationships between the characters, both familiar and new, in this book.
As Marla's step-daughter is growing up, it is a precipitous balance between the well manne

Bad Hair Mystery Series Book 15
I received an advanced copy of Trimmed to Death by Nancy Cohen in exchange for an honest review.
How many mysteries can Marla solve? This will be her 15th since the start of the Bad Hair Mystery Series. In Trimmed to Death Marla once again “fall’s” upon a murder; this time while enjoying herself at a fall festival sponsored by a local farm.

This is a series I’ve been enjoying ever since the author came to our store and, if I recall correctly, met with one of our book clubs. Nancy may have also participated in a big mystery authors gathering we hosted but I honestly am not sure about that and my records from back then are gone, burned up in a computer surge. At any rate, we go back to at least 2000 or 2001 and I haven’t missed a book since. There’s a reason for that—these are really good books with a protagonist I like a lot and, un ...more

In yet another great story, Marla Vail once again is involved in the investigation of a murder. Her detective husband, Dalton, is on the case and Marla the sounding board and information seeker. Suspects abound with interesting connections from the food critique to the owners of the farm to the Italians providing virgin olive oil.

As if that isn't enough, Marla can't just have one crisis, and she is also helping her friend Tally Riggs figure out how and where to reopen her boutique cafe, at the

What a great read! Marla and Dalton make a wonderful team. I was surprised that they allowed their sixteen year old daughter to get involved in the investigation. My father never discussed his cases at home.
I liked the plot, who killed Francine and then Alyce and why? There is plenty of suspicion to go around. The subplots were intriguing. I learned about olives in a grove setting. Maybe not the way they are processed here in Arizona but similar. My husband won’t each black olives since he learn

There is a lot going on in Trimmed to Death! While on a scavenger hunt at the festival, Marla finds the body of a bake-off contestant who is wearing the jacket of a different contestant. This story has well developed characters and lots of suspects. It will be difficult to discover the actual motive and killer. I really enjoyed this story.

I always enjoy these. Marla has a bad habit of discovering bodies, but her method of chatting with suspects until she solves the mystery is a huge help to her detective husband. This one mainly revolved around food, which was interesting.
