Rate this book
The school-wide science fair Peter Parker (a.k.a Spider-Man) has been eagerly awaiting has finally arrived! Peter has always excelled at science, and after getting the boot in a basketball game earlier that day, he could use a little pick-me-up. So imagine Peter's surprise and dismay when basketball great and all-around-bully Flash Thompson shows up with a totally awesome project! But when the science fair is put in jeopardy thanks to the antics of one Doc Ock, Peter will need to team up with fellow 'bugz' Ant-Man and the Wasp to save the fair and the people in it— even if it means someone else walking away with the prize. Great things—and even bigger surprises—come in tiny packages in this third installment in Marvel's Super Hero Adventures early chapter book series.

My review: it’s pretty much what you expect, typical superhero violence but with a good message

James’ review: I really liked how Spidey got to be on a team and they all worked as a team to stop Doc Oc.

The Marvel Super Hero Adventures series is an early chapter series featuring a school age Peter Parker/Spider-Man. In this one Peter Parker is picked last in gym class by the lead jock, which hurts his feelings. Later, he ends up next to the jock at the science fair, and Peter unkindly hopes that he can beat the jock at the fair. Doctor Octopus shows up at the fair to wreak havoc in his quest for gigantor particles, and Spider-Man is called into action. No spoilers as to what happens next. :P

(It's a kid's book. I bet you can guess the outcome.)

Joe isn't reading himself yet, but has really gotten into longer form books lately. These chapter books aren't too very long and have full color illustrations on every two-page spread. We can read aloud over the course of 3-4 nights, so probably about 45 minutes to an hour total of reading. And Joe loves all things Marvel anymore, so he gets excited to see Spider-Man appear!

My 3yo has recently gotten into the Spidey and His Amazing Friends cartoon on Disney+, and this book looked to be of similar artwork. She had me keep reading chapter after chapter after initially showing no interest in the book. I was impressed by her captive attention. I was also impressed by the storyline between Peter Parker and Flash Thompson. I wasn’t expecting a well done subplot in a short book geared towards younger readers. The lesson wasn’t cheesy or tacked on; it seemed organic to the characters. Well done overall.

Perhaps not my idea of good literature but my 3-year old son pulled it off the shelf at the library and carried it all the way home. He has requested non-stop for months and even slept with it next to the bed. He can sit through the entirety with focus, mimicking the actions and characters. Give in...but why limit his joy for reading and books? Thank goodness we are not allowed to return books to the library as it has become a part of our family...

3.5 stars for this first book in the series. I love handing kids super hero stories - they already know and love the characters! This was a solid start, focusing on Spider-Man, Ant Man and Wasp vs Doc Oc with an underlying story about not making assumptions about others, fairness, and categorizing others.

My children love these little books. They thoroughly enjoy each and every story, as if they are all unique and individual without any cause for similarity among them. Even though sometimes, they might seem tedious and repetitive to me as a parent, I do enjoy being able to read short-stories to my children that are clean and respective.

5 Yr old boy loved

Read with my son, his rating is 5|5. His favorite character is Spiderman. He says it would have been better with iron man, too
