Hans ritningar var säkert mycket bättre än mina. Jag kommer ihåg att jag beundrade dem mycket, fast jag nog tyckte att hans hjältar hade väl korta ben." Så berättar Elsa Beskow om sin barndom "När jag var liten" publicerad första gången i Barnbiblioteket Saga nr 35 (texten ovan tagen ur Solägget 1986) I samma berättelse skriver Elsa Beskow om hur roligt det var att gå i skolan och få lära sig läsa, hennes favoritbok var en tjock Topeliusbok som hon släpade med sig överallt och läste högt ur för sina syskon.
Redan som liten satte hon ihop långa sagor som hon berättade för sin ett år äldre bror, "Vanligen gick det till så, att han släpade mig med sig till en vrå, satte sig själv i vägen för mig, så att jag ej kunde rymma, och befallde: berätta nu! Och jag pladdrade på så gott jag kunde. Ibland tappade jag alldeles tråden i berättelsen och frågade honom bekymrad: 'Vad menar jag, Hans?' 'Kanske menar Elsa så…' föreslog han helt beredvilligt, och så fortgick berättelsen."
Elsa Beskow föddes 1874 på Söder i Stockholm. Hennes familj bestod av mor och far, fyra systrar och en bror. När Elsa Beskow var 15 år dog hennes far och modern blev ensam med barnen. Familjen flyttade till moderns ogifta yngre syskon som bodde tillsammans. Mostrarna och morbrodern blev verklighetens förebilder till Tant Grön, Tant Brun, Tant Gredelin och Farbror Blå.
Under åren 1892-95 utbildade sig Elsa Beskow till teckningslärare vid Tekniska skolan, det var också då som hon började att teckna för barn. 1897 gifte hon sig med Natanael Beskow, präst och konstnär. Paret fick sex söner, vilka många gånger kom att stå modell för barnen i hennes berättelser och sagor. Deras hus och vildvuxna trädgård i Djursholm fick ge inspiration till hennes besjälade blommor och växter. Elsa Beskows stil har jämförts med sekelskifteskonstnärer som Walter Crane och Kate Greenaway, men även Ottilia Adelborg. Första gången hennes bilder, bildberättelser och verser publicerades var 1894 för barntidningen Jultomten.
Barnboksdebuten kom 1897 med bilderboken Sagan om den lilla lilla gumman, en klassiker som de flesta barn känner till ännu idag. Elsa Beskow hade fått ramsan om den lilla gumman berättad för sig av sin mormor och i den första upplagan från 1897 slutar boken abrupt med gummans "Schas katta!" I nästa upplaga tyckte förläggaren på Wahlström och Widstrand att boken skulle sluta med "och katten sprang till skogs och kom aldrig mer igen" för så mindes han ramsan.
Men femtio år senare, i en ny upplaga, skrev Elsa Beskow till raden "Men kanske[br]ändå att han kom hem till slut" då flera barn blivit ledsna över det tidigare slutet.
Beskows bilder dominerade bilderbokskonsten under närmare 50 år och säkert har många av dagens bilderbokskonstnärer påverkats av hennes konst.
1952 erhöll Elsa Beskow Nils Holgersson-plaketten för sin samlade produktion. Det finns dessutom ett pris uppkallat efter henne, Elsa Beskow-plaketten, instiftat 1958 av Sveriges allmänna biblioteksförening.

Read this to my little niece and nephew on Christmas Day, we all thought it was delightful and really loved the charming illustrations. Twas a very nice way to find a moment of peaceful calm amongst all the crazy big family celebrations ;-)

Ollie’s Ski Trip
This is a delightful winter and winter into spring themed story. Ollie receives his first pair of real skis when he turns six and waits for the season’s snow to start falling so that he can use them, which eventually happens and he has a wonderful adventure. This story captures so well the feelings of delicious anticipation and the joy of an independent adventure, both of which I remember experiencing as a child. The wonder of nature (via skiing, sledding, etc., and such characters as King Snow, Jack Frost, Mrs. Thaw, and the other “children” Ollie plays with, and Spring too) shines through.
Charming Illustrations! I particularly liked the polar bears that sniff as dogs would do. The skis Ollie uses seem more like cross country skis than the downhill variety.
This is a long story as picture books go, but I think readers and listeners in a wide age range can enjoy it.

When six-year-old Ollie is finally given his first pair of real skis - something he has long anticipated - he can't wait for it to snow, so he can try them out. Setting out into the snowy woods, the first opportunity he gets, Ollie is befriended by Jack Frost, sees Mrs. Thaw (who is quickly driven away), and is taken on a visit to the icy, polar bear-guarded palace of the Winter King. Here he spends a day watching the king's assistants make everything from ski boots to skate blades, and joining in the workers' break-time play, before heading home. The story concludes with the eventual coming of Spring - as heralded by the reappearance of Mrs. Thaw - which is at first resisted by Ollie and his little brother (who want to keep playing in the snow), and then accepted and celebrated.
It's hard to say, really, why I enjoyed Ollie's Ski Trip - first published as Olles Skidfärd in 1907 - so much more than the other Elsa Beskow picture-book ( Woody, Hazel and Little Pip ) I read today. Perhaps Ollie's tale felt more real to me, not because he was a "real" boy (as opposed to a forest brownie), but because his longing for a specific event - the coming of the snow - resonated with me? Didn't we all, as children, look forward to certain specific seasonal markers? Whatever the case may be, I found this a charming book, one which paired an engaging Winter story with delightful illustrations. Highly recommended to any young skiers and winter lovers, as well as to Elsa Beskow fans.

Elsa Beskow is always a good idea! Particularly for sweet reading during the seasonal changes.

I do love Beskow's art and her skill at telling a tale that intertwines play and nature. Jack Frost is one of my favorite postcard subjects (where he's usually engaged in some mischievous activity), so I was pleasantly surprised when he surfaced in this story (albeit with a much more serious demeanor). "Mrs. Thaw" was new to me, however. Does she appear in other Scandinavian tales?
Six-year-old Ollie was given quite a bit of freedom for his young years, but I suspect my 4.5 year old nephew will readily identify with him and will envy his adventures.
This is a keeper, for sure!

calling all Waldorks. . . Waldorf inspired magic abounds in this one. Lovely take on the seasons as Winter seems to not want to let go but is overtaken by Spring. . . and her butterfly driven chariot is to die for!

Mimo, że sytuacja stawała się coraz bardziej niebezpieczna, Olle swoim sprytem uniknął nie tylko niewolniczej pracy w dziecięcej fabryce Króla Zimy, ale również jego niepokojących sympatii do „rezolutnych chłopców”.

A beautiful story of winter into spring. Really brings to life the joys of winter. Then Mrs Thaw comes along and Spring comes to life. Really nicely done my3 1/2 yr old boy loves it.

Sorry to be contrary, but Beskow is too old-fashioned and twee for me, this book being no exception to the others that I've been disappointed by.

December 22, 2024Po książkę sięgnęłam z ciekawości podczas wizyty w krakowskiej szwedzkiej kawiarni. Głównie dlatego, że zauważyłam ilustracje pojawiające się na szwedzkich naczyniach. Wcześniej nie znałam twórczości Elsy Beskow. Po lekturze obu - z resztą jedynych — przełożonych na język polski książeczek mam mieszane uczucia.
Celem autorki jest przedstawienie przebiegu pór roku (zima i wiosna) poprzez nadanie im osobowości i spersonifikowanie ich. Pomysł fajny i powszechnie znany. Dodatkowo procesowi twórczemu towarzyszą naprawdę ładne i kultowe (co widać we współczesnej kulturze szwedzkiej i nie tylko) autorskie ilustracje, które cieszą oczy zarówno młodszych jak i starszych czytelników.
Nie jestem jednak przekonana do przebiegu historii i wynikających z niej sytuacji... (Młody) czytelnik ma okazję poznać kilkuletniego Ollego, który postanawia skorzystać z nart, które otrzymał w prezencie. Na całodzienną wyprawę do lasu udaje się sam za zgodą swojej mamy. Tak, wiem, to bajka dla dzieci, jednak właśnie dlatego zwracam na to uwagę. Chłopca nie niepokoi również spotkanie starszego mężczyzny, który proponuje, że go zaprowadzi do twierdzy kolejnego starszego mężczyzny, który "zatrudnia" m.in. młodych chłopców w jego wieku. A co z zasadą nie ufaj obcym?

The book was a cute winter story...King Winter, Jack Frost and Mrs Thaw. Shows lots of fun things to do outside during the winter snow. However my own issue with the book is the author used the word 'stupid' in the story. There are lots of other words that would've been appropriate to put in that sentence.

I love any of Elsa Beskow's books! This short but delightful little (30 pages) book was the perfect read this morning. Ollie wants it to snow that he can use his new ski's. He encounters wonderful friends along the way. Great books for all kids, and the illustrations are watercolor and so beautiful.

Very biased review since I grew up with this book! One of my favourite of Beskow’s! Winter has always been my favourite season so it makes sense that this used to be my favourite (and still it). This book is also where my fascination of polar bears started (still my favourite animal). Beautiful illustrations and overall magical!

A sweet little story about a little six year old boy who loves outdoor sports. Written over a hundred years ago I found the story to be a bit fanciful, but the illustrations are brilliant. I wouldn't say this is a must read, but is a charming addition to a child's library

A delightful kid's tale from Sweden about the imaginary humans that keep the snow fresh enough to ski upon. If you see Mrs. Thaw, tell her to GO AWAY AT ONCE unless it is spring. The only book that has me feeling optimistic about winter's arrival.
