The Northern Cookbook was my mom's go-to book for recipes. When my sisters and I moved out, mother searched the globe and found a copy for each of us. (I found copies for my kids when they were toddlers). Being from the Arctic, these recipes have come in handy time and time again. I especially love Bertha Allen's recipes; I remember many times sitting in her kitchen with something bubbling on the stove. It was always a treat!

My gramma gave this book to my mom a million years ago, after a trip she & my grampa had taken up north somewhere.
This book is so awesome in so many ways! It's pretty vintage (ooo, a page of jellied salad recipes!). The recipes also apply to the northern climate and rationing procedures - ie, the recipes incorporate a lot of wild game, or canned/dried products.
And there are some crazy recipes in here!!
- Sweet & Sour Deer Ribs
- Canadian Lynx Stew
- Rabbit Ham Croquettes
- Ginger Prairie Chicken
- Rose Hip Cranberry Jam
- Reindeer Bourguignon
- Fillet of Whale with Mushroom Sauce
The list goes on and on (and don`t worry, they`re not all crazy recipes. I just have the most interest in the exciting recipes).
The other cool thing about this old cookbook is that it`s also a handbook of types. It contains info like ``Household Tips,`` ``Nutrition Tips and Meal Planning,`` and ``Hunting Regulations in the Northwest Territories`` (although I`m gonna guess that those regulations might be a bit outdated now).
No pictures of the food, but some cute, goofy little sketches.

This book has the best "Baked Beans, Western Style" recipe! It has been a family favourite since I had the book passed down to me 40 years ago.
