On a class trip to an exotic Australian island, Kylie saves a quokka (an adorable marsupial) from a vicious predator. Clancy the quokka shows his gratitude by revealing to her a great secret: quokkas can talk! Together they set off to save the other quokkas, an adventure that will require all of their courage, resourcefulness and determination.
The school trip from Perth to Rottnest Island for the day had Kylie and her friends in a state of great excitement. Kylie was excited to see the quokkas – cute little marsupials that she knew she’d just want to cuddle. But one of the mean boys in the class had an agenda which would cause both trouble and adventure for Kylie.
When Kylie rescued a quokka from a cat intent on having it for lunch, she was astounded to hear the little guy thank her. Discovering the quokka could talk, she learned his name was Clancy – from then on, the day became more interesting as Kylie did her best to protect Clancy’s family. Help came from different quarters as they travelled the island and Kylie met some of the different creatures who made up the population of Rotto and the ocean surrounding it.
What would be the outcome for the quokkas? And would Kylie’s adventure change her in any way?
Rotto! Kylie and the Quokkas of Rottnest Island by Aussie author Jonathan Macpherson is the author’s first foray into children’s fiction and in my opinion, he’s done an excellent job. Aimed from around 6 years and up, it’s a delightful story which I know my granddaughters will love, and many other children (and adults) besides. Highly recommended.
With thanks to the author for my digital ARC to read and review.
I'll be honest. I love quokkas so when the opportunity came to read Rotto!, I jumped at it. Sure that makes me a biased reviewer but I also know a well-crafted story when I read one. And Jonathan Macpherson has written a little ripper of a page turner!! I loved every part of it - the quirky quokkas, the villains, the heroes, the humour, the suspense, the chase and the tantalising fantasy that maybe, just maybe quokkas really can talk! Jonathan has very cleverly woven together all sorts of facts and features that are unique to Rottnest Island, so not only does Rotto! have a rollicking plot, there's an educational aspect to it as well. This book will most definitely appeal to Australians young and old, but it will win the hearts of others from around the globe too. A fabulous addition to any school or home library - guaranteed to have children hanging off every word and begging for more. Move over Nemo!!

This is a fun little chapter book for kids about a brave girl who saves a quokka and ends up on an exciting adventure.
This story was easy to understand and fun to read, I think it would be a great addition to any young reader's library.
What a fun read. I'm looking forward to the conversation it will open with my Grand Daughter.
A couple of years ago my wife and I spent a month touring Australia. It was absolutely fantastic! I must admit, we didn't have any conversations with the wildlife, but we were warmly greeted and treated everywhere we went.
Oh! PS: I don't remember a "Rottnest Island" (tee hee hee) but I DO remember "Kangaroo Island". Thanks for a well spun tale
This was such a cute and engaging story. My daughter and I read it together over a few days and we were both sucked into the adventure of Kylie, Clancy, Razor Ray, and the quokka clan. Kylie and her classmates reminded me so much of when I was in grade school. The Toohey twins were the class clowns, you had the bully, Danny, the friendly and a bit nerdy kid, Charlie, and Kylie was a bit shy and awkward. I really enjoyed how well the author illustrated Kylie's progression throughout her visit to Rottnest Island; you can see her growing as a person as she is faced with challenges from Danny, the cat, the shark, the king skinks, and so many other creatures and scenarios she has to use her wits to overcome. You can truly see Kylie become braver as she fights to help her newfound friends. I highly recommend this book to parents and children alike, you're in for an adorable immersive adventure.
🌴Kylie discovers a charming animal friend and turns hero in this delightful adventure☺🌊 August 23, 2018 Format: Kindle Edition 👍👍A very cute story of an intrepid, animal loving little girl who spends a school day trip to Rottnest Island on a daring, exciting adventure. In addition to the darling quokka and his clan that Kylie befriends, she encounters skinks, bird life, a stingray, a shark, and a nasty cat and vicious snake. Children, especially little girls, should really enjoy this little heroine's bravery and the loyal friendship she develops with Clancy the quokka. It's filled with hair-raising situations that lead one to the next and even more dangerous. The story also provides a lesson about the need to protect wildlife from introduced species.

A great book that I could not sit down once Ihad begun reading it from the second chapter on.
I liked the fact that it was such a heart warming story of how a grade schoolgirl who took pity on a quokka and the adventures they had in rescuing each other and a little sister quokka. I would like to recommend thats for almostSt any young kid and up who cares about God's creatures and loves to read animal stories, mystery, action and adventure type stories, too! Sunny
I read this book to my grandchildren over the weekend and they loved it! My nine year old grandson always, always does something else while anyone reads to them. This time, he just sat and listened, then begged for another chapter. It is well written, a story you get engrossed in and the language is ideal for children between 6 - 10 or so. One of the best books I've read to the grandies!! I highly recommend it!
What a fun and adorable story! Join Kylie as she has an adventure through Rottnest Island. She meets many different animals both friend and foe. Children of all ages will enjoy the story!
I was gifted an ARC in return of an honest review.
