The M.D.'s Mistress

Rate this book
Such arrogance! Nurse Becca Jameson spent months side by side with Dr. Seth Andrews in a tiny, understaffed, under-funded African hospital. He was bossy, gorgeous, brilliant…and she'd fallen for him, hook, line and scalpel. Now back in Philadelphia, he had the nerve to make this outrageous proposal…how could he? And how could she refuse?

I like Joan Hohl's romances. Her stories tug at your heartstrings, but ALWAYS provide a HEA for the main characters. They may not be the deepest books I read, but when I want to read and be happy at the end of the book, I can always pick up one of hers and know I'll be satisfied. "The M.D.'s Mistress" is her latest Silhouette release.

Becca has always been attracted to Dr. Seth Andrews. And working with him for over a year in Africa has only deepened the respect and longing she has for him. She knows he respects her skills as a nurse. Now if only he would notice her as a woman.

Seth has always admired Becca, and his body would like nothing more than to spend an extended amount of time all over her, above her, and in her. But he's just not the relationship type...work is too important. So he escapes to a small clinic in Africa; a month reprieve is all he gets before she shows up for her rotation. When she works herself into an illness, they are both transported back to the states. And try as he might, he just can't get her out of his mind.
An unusual gift from the "Anonymous Billionaire", and Seth's inability to stop worrying about Becca provides these two the opportunity to get a little, or a lot, closer.

As good as two scoops of your favorite ice-cream...and less fattening.

Dr. Seth Andrews and nurse Becca Jameson have been working together for years on the same surgical team. She's been in love with him since the first day, but all he has for her is disdainful glares and impatience. For months, they've worked as a team in Africa until Becca overworks herself and they both get sent home. Somehow Becca's dedication makes the news and she meets the attention of the billionaire gifting deserving people - Becca is offered a self-chosen recovery period at a mountain "cabin." Seth has been unpredictable and kissing her to shut her up, so she decides to get away for her own good. But 3 weeks later, Seth shows up on her doorstep ready to boss her around some more. Instead, the two of them fall into bed together. Becca's dream is coming true, until she realizes that Seth is probably only in it for the sex and is going back to Philadelphia in a week. She's not about to become a fling for a guy she works with, no matter how much she loves him, but can she return at all?

So this book starts with the premise that Becca loves Seth despite the fact that she barely knows him personally (she's worked with him for years) and that he's pretty mean to her overall. I'm not sure the author at any point many any attempt to redeem Seth or make him worthy of the heroine's love...he was bossy and commanding the whole time. And even Becca doesn't clearly explain why or how she came to love him...because he's a dedicated doctor and because he's sexy are not good enough for me. Also, this title doesn't really do anything for the book because she's not his mistress...nor does he ever suggest it. They consensually have sex the first time and she ASSUMES he only wants sex. So when he asks or the week together she thinks it means it's over after. See what some communication can do? But she never asks and he never clarifies because he has no idea she thinks that way. And he believes she's turned off to a long-term relationship with him too. So it's a mutual misunderstanding.

As far as plot and character go - this wasn't that bad. Becca is fairly well developed except for her history adn background, but we do get to know her as a character and know very clearly what she's thinking. She gets a lot of monologue time. Seth was a bit less developed, especially in the beginning. I would have liked to have a little bit more of who he is and what his motivations are. I liked them getting to know each other better, spending time in the cabin and their sex scenes were on the steamy side of things, so nice. But I was majorly surprised that two seemingly competent medical professionals, revered in their fields, would simply IGNORE the need for birth control during sex. This is especially surprising since both of them had just been serving in Africa (no idea where though). But this isn't a one-time followed by a "OMG we forgot the condom." No this is two adults, a doctor and a nurse, who simply don't think about condoms or pregnancy or STDs. Then Becca says something ridiculous at the end about not knowing their reveling was going to get her pregnant. Really Becca? Not a trainwreck or even that much of a disaster, but not full 3-star material either.

It was ok, but the heroine was a bit too argumentative with the hero to be enjoyable. I did like that hero doesn't seem to have had sex with other women in a couple years (because they were both in Africa). I didn't like that he went on date and kissed another woman (did like that he felt like he cheated on heroine though). P.
