About: The Brownstone’s Mythical Collection: Arthur and the Golden Rope is a children’s picture book written and illustrated by Joe Todd-Stanton. It was published on 2/14/17 by Flying Eye Books, a children’s imprint of NoBrow Press, hardcover, 56 pages. The genres are picture books, fairytales, and fiction. This book is intended for readers ages 5 to 9.
My Experience: I started reading Arthur and the Golden Rope from The Brownstone’s Mythical Collection for my 5 year old son as a bedtime story on 5/30/17 and we finished it that same night. We read it again on 6/11/17. This book is fantastic! I love how Arthur doesn’t meet the general description of a hero: popular, big, strong, & handsome, but quite the opposite because the townsfolk deemed him a meddler with big wide rimmed eyeglasses and small. I love his curiosity and his interests to explore. Arthur collects many unusual things from his adventures in the forest and it piques my son’s interests greatly because he’s also a collector (little sticks that ends up in my washing machines).
In this book, readers will follow the adventures of Arthur as he travels to the land of the Viking Gods to ask their help to relight the great fire in his hometown in Iceland. This great fire provides warmth for the citizens and it was just destroyed by the huge black wolf. If the fire is not restored soon, the citizens could freeze to death. Growing up, Arthur enjoys exploring the woods and collect odd souvenirs. When the God of sky and thunder named Thor told him that he will help save Arthur’s hometown if Arthur can help him catch the monstrous wolf. The wolf can only be captured by the golden rope and in order to create the golden rope, Arthur was to obtain the sound of the cat’s footfall and a mountain root and put them into glass bottles. From his past explorations, Arthur didn’t think this would be any harder. When it’s time to tie up the big bad wolf, Arthur and the Gods run into an unexpected trap.
This is my first time encountering Norse Mythology and the Viking Age and I’m liking it. My son and I both love the illustrations. I love the separate images showing Arthur climbing up the World Tree to obtain the root of a mountain, up and up he goes. My son recognize that Arthur uses one of the items he collected from his exploration to trick the bad wolf. I like how the bird came to Arthur’s rescue just like Arthur came to the bird’s rescue in the past. My son questions how is it possible to record the sound of the cat’s footfall into a jar. Funny. I assume this is where the author’s attempt at humor in the story because Arthur hits the cat with a stick and it jumps into the air before hitting the ground giving Arthur the opportunity to record the cat’s footfall into the jar. We both laugh out loud at that part. I highly recommend everyone to read this book! Arthur is just too cute and for any unpopular kids out there, this book will encourage them to embrace their uniqueness because as unlikely as Arthur is, he’s the town’s hero!
Pro: Norse mythology, Viking Age, actions & adventures, illustrations, fast paced, unlikely hero, magical objects, ancient mythical world
Con: none
I rate it 5 stars!

Arthur and the Golden Rope by Joe-Todd Stanton is basically Norse Mythology for kids.
We start with Professor Brownstone telling the story of his ancestors' adventures. We learn about curious Arthur who sets out into the forest looking for adventure. Arthur is different than the others around him and when a monstrous wolf attacks the town, everyone is quick to blame him, and he knows that he must help. He embarks on a journey searching for the god of storms, Thor. Arthur is left with a series of challenges and must find two very rare items to stop Fenrir the wolf. Follow along in the book to see if Arthur can defeat Fenrir.
Kids love the illustrations and story. I've since realized that this is the second book in a series, but the first is no where to be found. I hope we can eventually locate a copy of the first book.
Arthur's adventures were always interesting but they turned dangerous after a monstrous black wolf put out the critically important fire in his small Icelandic town. Shaking, but undaunted, Arthur accepted his fate and saved the town by helping Thor capture the wolf. Colorful images, limited text, and tons of action make this a captivating Norse tale for ages 8-12.
Komiks ma naprawdę piękne ilustracje (estetyka prac Stantona mocno do mnie trafia), ale to baaardzo przeciętna opowieść przygodowa o chłopcu, którego serce żąda wrażeń. Przyjemna, ale to tyle.
From the golden foiling on the front cover, to that rich and thick paper used throughout, Arthur and the Golden Rope is an absolutely beautiful book. I was very thrilled to receive a review copy of it from Flying Eye Books. I have been looking for more books like this; mythic adventures, well told, Arthur And the Golden Rope gave me exactly what I was hoping for. It is a fabulous statement of a book.
The book begins with us being welcomed to the Brownstone family vault. The vault is full of treasures but the most treasured is "this humble collection of books". These books retell the adventures of the Brownstone ancestors, from Eleanor Brownstone's discovery of the Crystal Kingdom through to Eric Brownstone's battle with the hundred-headed snake King of Tuckernuck Island. Arthur and The Golden Rope is the story of the first adventurous Brownstone: "Arthur, the unlikeliest of heroes."
Arthur's adventure begins in a small Icelandic town and comes to encompass many of the mythic heroes and figures from Norse mythology. Arthur himself is delightful; independent, brave, charming, and he steps up to save his town when all seems lost.
I tweeted some images someimages from this book because it's an intensely beautiful book. Todd-Stanton's art is rich; it's layered and scratchy and thick with detail. It's big, too, there are some double page spreads here that sing with detail. The library spread in particular is delightful; Arthur is researching and shown in various poses around the library, and every inch of the pages sing of movement and of thought and effort. Arthur opens a book with teeth. He almost falls off a ladder. Swords impale books into the wall. A spell creeps out of a left open book. It is beautiful, and smart work.
Textually, the big thing to note about Arthur And The Golden Rope is the great orality of the tale. It's broken up into a series of small paragraphs, some a just sentence long, and Todd-Stanton never loses sight of the conceit at the heart of this story. This is a story being told to us; and the pacing is perfect. And I adored that, really, because (and excuse me whilst I get all technical) but such orality speaks back to the great heritage of these stories. Stories of mythic and magic are made to be spoken and orated, and Arthur and The Golden Rope gets that. This is a story to be performed and shared, but it's also one that is quite able to step back and let the artwork speak when it needs . This is such a clever, balanced, brilliant book.
#trebacitat!
This is a beautifully drawn mythic adventure that maybe could have stood a tad more substance but might be just the ticket for the young reader in your life that's at that tricky age between full blown chapter books and picture books.
Arthur is the oddball in his village. He likes to hear old legends from the town crazy lady and cobble together costumes to dress up like his favorite heroes. Everyone thinks he's a weakling with no real strengths but when the great fire in his village is stamped out by Fenrir, Loki's evil giant dog, and the whole town is about to freeze forever it will take Arthur's knowledge of ancient Norse mythology to save the day!
This was a lot of fun but I think a tad more appropriate for the younger end of early/mid level readers. It does have totally dazzling illustrations packed with vibrant details and just a touch of tongue in cheek humor but older kids might miss more detail driven action scenes and explanations.
The "Brownstones Mythical Collection" is like if Tintin and Hilda had a little baby. "Arthur and the Golden Rope" is the first in this series of adorable pictures books about plucky young heroes dropped into various mythologies (in this case, Norse Mythology).
Joe Todd-Stanton uses colour so well--rich golds, cool blues and dusty reds--giving his whimsical, textured illustrations the soothing warmth and glow of a crackling campfire. I'm not surprised he has done work for Usborne, because he often depicts his characters moving through sprawling, diagram-like environments reminiscent of a children's reference book. The maps in these books are also first rate.
All in all, "The Brownstones Mythical Collection" is a fun way to give your kids a primer in mythology right before bedtime.
I was a bit disappointed with Arthur and the Golden Rope. The blurb teased a cool, original premise but the story was just a riff on a Norse myth. The illustrations were beautiful but the whole experience left me underwhelmed.
Okay, these books are GORGEOUS. Like, the art is wonderful and even the quality of the paper is super satisfying?? The story is short but cute and clever. Looking forward to reading others in the series.
Only had one quick read through but I absolutely love it! Arthur is counselled by the village elder, who is a woman ( not sure why I'm so taken with that fact!) He becomes adventurous and brave, endlessly interested in his surroundings. He gathers and carries around keepsakes and charms from his adventures and who knows when they'll come in useful. Disaster strikes Arthur's village when he witnesses a great wolf, the son of the Norse god Loki , put out the village's source of heat, The Great Fire. If the wolf isn't captured and the fire restored the village will turn to ice. Can Arthur help Thor put things back in their rightful place and order? Can he gather the things necessary to make the golden rope to bind Fenrir? It's quite a quest for a boy with ' legs like two cooked noodles.' I loved the illustrations, the detail and the way they convey feeling was totally absorbing. Yet again, this wasn't really the kind of thing I would normally read but, once again, I am so glad I did! Clever, carefully crafted and ignites a hunger to know more about the gods.
Having read Hilda and the Troll this week and having recently finished Who Let The Gods Out I'm thinking these books would make a fantastic starting point for children revving up to learn about Norse gods and mythology. I think used as a bundle they could be a successful, non threatening, non intimidating start to what can be a daunting project.
Děti to budou milovat. A vy ostatně taky, pokud v sobě rádi krmíte svého malého cvrčka.
Beautifully illustrated book! A captivating tale of a heroic journey of a young boy that must travel through the Nordic gods' realm to save his village.
I used this book as a hook for my year 5 class to get them excited about mythological beasts with the eventual aim to have them write a non-chronological report about one.
I would definitely recommend it to other children and primary school teachers. I will also be looking to read the other books in the series.
Fantastic story with a bit of an intro into Norse Mythology. These feels like the start of a great series. I loved the art, the layout and formatting of this book, and the unlikely but intrepid hero! Definitely recommend to fans of picture books, cute graphic novels, and mythology. For fans of Noelle Stevenson's Nimona and other pleasantly funny fantasy stories with heart.
This book is very cute, clever, and the art is amazing. I really think this would be an engaging book especially with some Norse lore thrown in! ~Ashley
This little children’s book is so delightful! The illustrations are just magical and the setting is fantastic! The only thing I didn’t love is writing. Even though it’s meant for children, it still could have used a bit more filling in here and there.
Doputuje až do Åsgardu, kde požádá Thora o pomoc. Ten rád pomůže, má to ale háček - ono v titulu zmíněné zlaté lano...
Děti jsou z knížky nadšené a už se nemůžou dočkat příštího dílu - Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx.
