Routledge Critical Thinkers
Jean-François Lyotard
Jean-François Lyotard is one of the most celebrated proponents of what has become known as the 'postmodern'. More than almost any other contemporary theorist, he has explored the relations between knowledge, art, politics and history, in ways that offer radical new possibilities for thinking about modern culture.
Simon Malpas introduces students to issues at the heart of Lyotard's work, including
*modernity and the postmodern
*the sublime
*ethics
*history and representation
*art and the unpresentable
*knowledge, the university and the future.
Lyotard's work is impossible to dismiss or ignore for anybody who is serious about contemporary literature and culture, and this guide provides the ideal companion to the wide variety of his critical texts.

The book provides a good description of Lyotard's works and thoughts. It gives a brief description of his works, his important concepts like sublime and differend and narrative. What it fails is in giving an analysis,it just described things as they are.
Jean Francois Lyotard
Lyotard is a thinker known for his popular work,'The postmodern condition' and the definition he gave to the term postmodernism,'incredulity towards metanarratives'. He says that every situation,be it of a country or society or a person, follows a narrative. And then there are metanarratives and grandnarratives which he said to be the narratives which defines changes in human life and history as a whole. He identifies two grand narratives-speculative grand narrative and grand narrative of emancipation. He is against all sort of narratives.
Another important concept is 'differend' which means the inability to express the injustice done because of the mixing of language games. Here he adopts the language game theory of Later Wittgenstein. He says the task of a philosopher is to identify differends in the society.
In 'the postmodern condition',he says that in the modern society knowledge has become a commodity which can be bought and sold. Those who own knowledge has power and thus the world is controlled by corporates who own most patents.
In literature,he identifies Proust as an example of modernism and James Joyce as an example of postmodernism. He praises 1984 by Orwell saying the protagonist attempted to resist the totalitarian regime eventhough he didn't succeed.
What I didn't like about Lyotard is that he doesn't give a method of his own. He says a philosopher should identify differends in a society, but he doesn't say anything more. His philosophy doesn't offer a clear picture of 'what to do'. But to offer a clear picture would be to go against his own philosophy. Therefore all he can offer is 'what is'. But that doesn't offer a point to move forward or at least move, which is what defines a philosophy. Looking back is fine, but living in the past isn't.
The book is a good(or average) reference for beginners but that's all there is to it.
